Grandfather Paradox: Explained in Simple Words

The grandfather paradox is considered the biggest, most popular objection to the logical possibility of backwards time travel. It characterizes a hypothetical situation in which a time traveller goes to their past and ends up causing an event (like, the killing of their grandfather) which makes travelling to the past and altering it impossible.
What this means is that if you go back in time and kill your grandfather, you don’t exist, which means that your grandfather cannot be killed. As you can see, there are two realities occurring in parallel here. The grandfather paradox is also a key plot element in the famous Hollywood movie Tenet (released in 2020), directed by Christopher Nolan.
Although all this talk about time travel and the grandfather paradox is obviously purely hypothetical, there is evidence of two realities occurring in parallel at the same time. This is a phenomenon in the quantum world which is known as superposition.

If your i.q is high you know the answers that suggest then dont kill your grandfather is a low i.q answer why? That's the purpose of the grandfather paradox to explain in so simple term that time travel is imposibble in a way that you can change anything. Unless the one you can time travel to is not your dimension/timeline. Gets??

Hypothetically when I travel in time it would create a divergent timeline, rather than my own past, technically I am not shooting my grandfather but a mirror universe version of my grandfather, hence creating the mirror version of my past self to never be born , but my reality would still exists. This also justifies that time can always move in a single direction

The solution to time travel paradoxes could be seen through the many worlds idea. If you travel back in time you now exist in a different world and your future from that point on is yet to unfold. The time/place you travelled from still exists but is a different world, it just shares the same history up to the point you travelled back to. If you go back and kill your grandfather two worlds now exist. The one with you and your grandfather (alive or dead but not murdered) and the world where you exist having just killed your grandfather. Where this idea gets a bit difficult is if you go back in time and watch your mother give birth to yourself you are now in a world with two humans sharing the same dna and exact features. A bit like identical twins but with massive age differences.

Grandfather paradox is only an easier to understand example. There would be paradox as long as history has been changed. History is not limited to major events which we care about, but also trivial microscopic events like the specific location of a specific atom at a specific time. If in the original timeline there was no future-you that suddenly showed up at your grandfather's time, the moment you travelled back in time, there is already a paradox.
@jaypee9575
@jaypee9575 Год назад
Exactly. People who talk about time travel like this seem to think causality is limited to major events. The moment you go back in time to before your birth, you prevent your birth. No specific actions are needed. A thought I've had when exploring this concept is that if you were to travel back in time 120 years (before the oldest person on Earth was ever born), then every single person on Earth in the present would be a completely different human being when you traveled back to the future.

It applies for basically all of time travel. If you time travel to fix something, then you changed the past. Now that the past has been changed, in the future, you have no reason to go back in time and fix that thing. Since you have no reason to go to the past and fix that something, then you wouldn’t have time traveled. If you never time traveled, then that thing was never fixed.

Ok: Here's my take on time travel. Now, there are different types of "causal glue" which is basically the tendency to cause grandfather paradoxes (they dont actually exist and are unprovable - they are more of a concept) High: Predestination paradoxes are common. Past is unchangeable. Medium: Major changes actually split the timeline, but simple existence does not. Low: Grandfather paradoxes are common. Past cannot be unchanged. (you can see people talking about this one in the comment section) I'll get to the paradox in the video. Let's generalize it. A (grandfather) > B (Clara) > C (time machine) C > /A (prevents grandfather) > /B > /C I propose: /C > A. This means: Grandfather births Clara makes time machine. Time machine causes grandfather's death - and Clara's existence and the time machine's existence. Non-Clara does not go back and time and does not kill her grandfather. (and then grandfather is alive) In this case, there is one universe where the grandfather is alive and killed. Timelines, you could say. These are mutually dependent and rely on eachother. The time travel kills the grandfather and the Non-time travel doesn't kill the grandfather. A little weird to think - but this actually solves most temporal paradoxes with enough timelines.

So then every time any person, or even a single particle travels to the past it creates a new timeline. That's not exactly traveling to the past; it's traveling to an entirely new universe which was identical to our universe up until the point that the the time-traveller went back to.
@blspot
@blspot 2 года назад
@@billhuff6972 that's is where this issue comes in right, altering past would always change the construct of history , but your reality cannot make it possible since our understanding of time to be linearly moving so all the changes that you will make should either be accounted for or the changes that you are making does not happen in your reality

I think there are a lot of misconseptions regarding time travels. First even if you time travel there is still the conservation of energy so if you travel in the past u still need to use energy that existed in the past to create your new body. Also a lot depends on the method u use to timetravel. For example you could just use a method like putting all atoms and energies and dark matter and everything we dont even know exists and put all in the same place and state from the same place and state in the past basically the same as if u would just rebuild a lego castle then that would be a way that would 100% work but you would need then to take some energy somewhere in the universe to create your body from the present. This would cause a reverse in actions but wouldnt make them undone. In this case the universe of the present would get replaced by a version of its past if you would change anything this would cause an infinite loop. This also solves the paradox involving u traveling back in time to give u the plans for a time machine because besides the logical problem of why should you send the plans from a timemachine to ur past self its either a loop that started when u gained the knowledge of creating a timemachine and then u send it in the past before you would come up with it by ur own. For the paradox that includes you as being your own father as a result of timetraveling the problem lies in the paradox it self, something like this simply wont happen its just impossible for this paradox to be created or exist.
@OldSkullSoldier

What about E=mc^2? If you travel to the past, then you remove your mass from now, from which released energy would destroy life on Earth, and create maxx in the past - which means you would need to steal that energy or mass in the past from somewhere. So maybe only possibility would be to move information (which we know doesn't have mass) - in such case doing anything would require sustaining a link => we could assume that such link would break on any try to do something that would prevent that link of establishing.

what if we use Butterfly Effect & Back to The Future style: before going back to 1960s, Clara buys a knife from a store called Super Jumbo Knife (introduced in 2019 by a company ran by young entrepeneurs in present day), puts it in her bag as she plans to kill her granddad by stabbing. She's also wearing Castore clothes (founded in 2015 by brothers born in late 80s and 90s). When she arrives in 1960, she got her granddad in sight. Just before she executes him, she reaches out her bag and suddenly her knife is gone, right? Cos the founder of Super Jumbo hasn't been born, thus her knife never exists. She must also be without any clothes after all...

Even if you don't kill your grandfather you wouldn't be born. Different sperm will reach a different egg from potentially a different woman and even if it was the exact same sperm and egg it will randomly combine with the egg to form different DNA. Any microsecond delay in fertilization will effect the DNA. Even if, by some miracle, your father's DNA is the same, you have affected the timeline, which will result his child's DNA and upbringing be very different, so basically your (half)sibling might be born and might even have the same name as you, but it won't be you. Unless we are talking about a form of time traveling where you create a separate timeline. There are different forms of time traveling in science fiction. Going back in time simply means creating an alternate timeline where you will not be born. But your old timeline might still be there, or you will be orphaned.

Exactly. If the past can not be changed- so the fact that you exist and invented a time machine also can’t be changed. So you still exist in the past, because all of the circumstances that already happened, and you kill your grandfather. That is it, nothing happens, the universe doesn’t “stop” you from doing anything because as mentioned- you can’t change what already happened. The person that you just killed isn’t your grandfather- YET! In this current point in time. He is just a person with no relation to you. If you’re honest, you can’t apply a law on one side of the equation and ignore it for the other side of the same equation… Another point is that time is relative. For the person traveling back in time, when he’s in the past, it is the present for him- not the past, he is there “now”. And that “now” consist of being born, growing up and inventing a time machine and go back in time and kill a person in that point of time, that specific present. Nothing can stop this sequence of events. By the way You will be able to return to the future (to the time and place you left), and you will be there, existing as you, with no other you because the other you was not born, you killed HIS grandfather.

The theory that multiverse exists make more sense than just one. So if u travel back in time and kill ur grandpa, u have entered or create a new verse.

Honestly, i don't think time is something you can travel within. The fact that it can move faster or slower (as it happens near black holes) doesn't mean that you can move yourself, or anything really, through time. Time is probably more of a concept than a dimension. That said, if it was possible, i don't think this paradox still has any merit. You go "back into time", as in you move yourself to a time/situation/moment definible as "before" with all that it entails, and you kill your grandpa. Cool. Therefore, provided there are no more modifications, your parents wont be born and technically you will not be born in that future. But you, the traveller, already exist. That you stay in that period or move back to your starting point, "time" will move on accordingly to what is the situations it is in. As in, yes, no grandpa and no dad. But you still exists, i still see no paradox. If you go back to te "future", you will arrive in a future developed from the past you modified. There is no alternate version of you, but YOU, the one that travelled, is still there, a physical existance. It doesnt even seem that complicated to me.

I have a thought about it.. that the whole paradox is wrong. I'm just a highschool student, with little to no physics background. What I understand is that everything move through time in one forward direction. And moving in opposite direction is considered as going in the past. So let's assume that we could go in the opposite direction, but everything else is moving in forward direction. So Even if we go in past, we'll be in a space with no other matters around us. Almost like empty space, except that I think there will be physics-fields like electromagnetic field.

The paradox assumes that the energy arranged as the matter that was your grandfather can only exist in that state once. If that is not the case, killing your grandfather wouldn't cause you to blink out of existence but merely change your date of birth :D

but like how many years until we actually figure out how to make a time machine lol, like it's gonna take a LOTTA work. you cant go back before you were born bc well, u don't exist lmao no this is weird, but his dad was already born maybe? because if he's killing his GRANDPA, that means his dad already exists 🤷 and besides, it's a theory right? which means it never happened, so yes, maybe it doesn't make sense because we just made it up? oh but what if he's going back in a copy of his history it's literally how a time machine works and he's affecting a parallel universe. sooo, he does kinda fade away, right after he kills him THIS HURTS MY BRAIN oml if he killed his grandfather there's no grandfather hence no paradox, right?

You can't travel back to the past to fix anything....If you could,then the problem doesn't even exists in the present...which means that you will not travel back in time......Also you the present man cannot encounter your past self because...only if you have met your future self in your present..,you can meet your past self...which makes you the future self for the past self

What if Clara killed his grandfather after the birth of her father?
@abrahamsalamah5773
@abrahamsalamah5773 2 года назад
Her father is going to grow up without a dad. That leads him to have a different childhood in which he might not like Clara's mom in the future. If he marries another woman, the Clara in this video will never be born and therefore cease to exist. Another "clara" (maybe with another name) will be born instead.

I don't think so. Grandfather paradox is obvious and simple to explain and understand. Quantum mechanics are not obvious because physics at very small dimensions is very different from physics at human dimensions.
