stewing about box, that came in the set as listed for sale, is too shallow to stand 4" King in. and that the Emblem is Off center. sometimes it's the little things that bother us the most.
This guy is one of those that will find an issue with EVERYTHING! F-ING obvious those boxes are meant to have the pieces laying down.....AND being into chess....HE SHOULD KNOW THAT!
Seriously? Do you not know how the pieces go in and how to use the felt pad? It’s not rocket science but the pieces are not intended to “sit” in the box. Lay half the pieces down then place the felt pad on top of them and put the remaining pieces in. Nicely made table!
@@respirs Yes and the description of the box on chess.com's shop says it's "ideal for a full tournament-sized set of Chessmen". Chess.com also says "The standard USCF tournament set has 2.25 inch squares and a king's height of 3.75 inches." Which would indicate that the box is not appropriate for the 4.0" or 4.4" sets that it ships with, rather it's designed for a maximum of 3.75".
They're meant to lay down in the box with the sheet of cushioning provided separating the pieces. And if you want to be nit picky maybe start with putting your pieces at the correct end of the board and the black queen on the right colored square.
Great note and great reply. I needed that explanation. I’m not nearly put off by the box as I am the placement of the emblem on H1. Am a graphic designer and that will drive me over the edge. All this really nice craftsmanship, and then a blunder like that?!? I believe I’ll research other board options. Thank you for the comments!
I received their 99.00 chess board with notation and logo as imperfect for only 20.00 and looked better than what OP received. His board classifies as imperfect.
I like your set very nice of you for posting the video. Made me realize that nothing can be perfect sometimes. I complain sometimes that my Black pieces are not polished enough lol
lay the piece in and not standing up. never heard anyone doing this.. i have the same set and no prob- mine board i order without the stamp and don’t stain it looks good
I see what you mean man! That king is too tall, I made a video too but luckily my king wasn't as tall and I don't set them upright. Maybe the box is meant for the pieces to be laid on the side?
The box isn’t designed for all the pieces to sit upright inside it. They are really just supposed to lie in it, using the spacer in between pieces if you want.
Really pretty pieces. I have the dgt rosewood electronic pieces but I like your "black" color more. I also built a table for my board, but wow, that bevel looks nice.
You might have already figured this out, but ... I have that box, or one very similar to it, and the bottom of box on the inside of each compartment is actually a removable floor, or at least it is on mine. You should be able to pull that out and get some more room to stand up the pieces.
I thought about buying that same board but maybe in a different color and without the logo. I have the same box from The House of Staunton but in the red color. The set I have contains a 4.9" King (French Warrior Chess set)and two extra queens that fit in the box laying down. There are a couple of pawns laying on top of the other pieces but it doesn't hurt anything since I don't travel with them. I wrote a review on their website that says a 4.9" King fits in the box but they didn't accept the review..lol
I also bought one, but I play literally same shitty chess as I did before... Don't know what to do...:/ Perhaps I need the same jacket with patches from sponsors, as Magnus has? Does anyone know where to get one?
Pieces lie in the box. Take a pair of pliers and pull out the crosses on the Kings if they must stand. Or drill holes in the lid where Kings will stand. I never want a maker's mark on a corner square of the board, nor on the box for that matter. I also think lettering on the board's edge is chintzy. It's fine for vinyl roll ups at a tournament but is like training wheels on a bike - especially for a serious wood set. You don't need it.
Umm, you buy all these chess sets and still don’t know how to set up the board. Colors are wrong, queens and kings are wrong. That board is a disaster...do you play chess? With that setup? Algebraic notation didn’t even help. I don’t know why people like to use chess for displays!
The only "wrong" thing is the coordinate system. White square is at the bottom right and the queens are on their colors. If you actually play semi-seriously you will superimpose the correct coordinate system in your head and realize d4 is still queens pawn and e4 is still kings pawn. It's literally just the board being flipped the wrong way.
Pawn promotion not pawn swap. Lol. Why are the pieces on the wrong side? Just remember the light pieces with the seal. That will set up the algebraic notation correctly
Those pieces are not pron to get banged up or showing signs of being banged up just by laying in a box with VERY MINIMAL space to move around and KNOCK into each-other....RELAX....it's not a 6 hundred dollar set of chess men.....
