I was schooled by the best hustlers back in the day! This was actually in Washington Square Park where the late great Vinnie Livermore used to beat my ass at that same table! (This is a bonus clip from The Tim Ferriss Experiment TV show. Watch the full series here: fourhourworkwee...)

So, a hustler can hold off an GM for a good 4 minutes? That was super impressive I think. I had a different impression about how quickly folks get decimated in chess at the hands of big geniuses.
@abrannan
@abrannan 8 лет назад
+sudhindra srinivas One, it's speed chess, which is played very differently than regular chess. More by feel than by deep reading. Two, a loss is a loss, the margins in chess in terms of pieces aren't too big, which is why the queen for queen+pawn trade is so good in Maurice's favor.
@moeburn
@moeburn 8 лет назад
+Andrew Brannan That was a 5 minute timer, hardly speed chess
@FunkFight1
@FunkFight1 8 лет назад
+sudhindra srinivas He's not a chess "hustler". He's just an old man who plays chess. Yeah, he tried to cheat but you don't call everybody who cheats a hustler. That would be a lot of people in professional sports, if that was the case. He's being called a hustler on many sits that post this video in an attempt to criminalize the old, predominantly Black, men who play chess in this manner. Stop calling them hustlers. A "pool hustler" is someone who hides their skill for a game or two to influence someone to make a larger bet than they normally would, and then unleashes all of their skill on them. These dudes that play in parks are not chess hustlers. Often there is no betting involved in the game. Even when there are, often the bets are simply symbolic amounts. They aren't gambling.
@moeburn
@moeburn 8 лет назад
+FunkFight1 By the definition of hustler (someone who hides their true skill to deceive a player of lesser skill into thinking it's an even match), the chess master was the true hustler here, only he didn't take the old man's money, so even then it wasn't a true "hustle"
@sudhindrak
@sudhindrak 8 лет назад
+FunkFight1 Agree with your assessment. My intention was not to disparage the man based on his color or status. Sorry if that was inappropriate.

But I fell out after I joined the military. Finding this video again has sparked my love of the game again, and I can't wait to teach my children the game.

TFW liberals focus on the support of an interlinked society to make up for the lack of generalization in modern life-skills (Due to the increasing complexity of the world), while conservatives believe that they could do it (Making food, making clothes, housing, weapons, building capital, developing social alliances etc.) all on their own... no he said "are you really?". you can tell that he was surprised and was about to stand up even before he heard maurice say grandmaster. he most likely knew of his name but never saw a picture of him before (or he forgot) and the grandmaster statement wasn't really an exact response to a question, but to just further describe himself since the guy wanted him to identify himself. i dont know how others perceive his accent but as someone from nyc, i hear people with these accents all the time

The Trash Talker reminds me of my brother. Every game we played wherein I was winning; he'd throw a big fit over some imaginary slight or "Issue", declaring the game void, of course. Then, if/when he was winning, he'd want to play through to the end, of course. I also recall that every game I ever received.... Right after receiving it for X-Mas, B-Day, what have you. Two or three critical pieces would come up missing. My paper-route bike always had flats, broken chain, you name it. Right until our Dad made my brother help me on all repairs. Then, miraculously, no more issues with my bicycle.

Couple years ago we were hanging out at the univeristy club, having a few drinks. We were on the 3rd round when outsiders (non-uni guys) started pouring in for a concert. My friend was an international master at the time (2370 Elo if I recall correctly). One of the guys who came in noticed the chess board and wanted to play. My friend didn't want to, so it quickly escalated to a heated argument. In the end both sides chilled out and they agreed on 1 match, as the guy insisted he wanted to play the best player. They've agreed on a small amount for the winner. They started playing and I've witnessed what an intelligent, talented and educated mind is worth!! It was one of the most metaphoric moments ever. My friend check-mated him in like 14 moves. 🤣🤣 Guy just sat there with an empty stare. I guess, he was used to winning in his circles... 😅
