@VeteranCape Why? When you sit down with a known hustler you have to understand that the rules will be fluid on the hustler's part. What I love is that Maurice probably didn't see the slight of hand but that didn't matter he knew the piece was missing. These guys have unbelievable photographic memories. He wasn't fooled. Depending on how you call out a hustler there can be a menu of responses ranging from embarrassment to indignation and worse. Maurice just replaces the "error" and Wilson just keeps playing. So, Maurice just keeps whooping him. So if Wilson's was the best move ever, Muarice's was the best reply ever.

Wilson the hustler was capturing the knight on D4 normal way a pawn captures and he also managed to capture D3 knight en passant! (The Double Knight Lift or The Double Knight Hustle)
@shauniamarek1641
@shauniamarek1641 5 лет назад
steven mendoza that’s not how en passant works. If a pawn makes a double-square move from it’s starting position when your pawn could have captured it if it only moved forward one square, you can capture the opponents pawn with the idea that it is captured while moving to the second square, or in other words while in passing (hence the name en passant), but only you can only play the move directly after your opponent moves the pawn up twi squares. So knights can’t be captured with en passant. OR I’m totally not reading the sarcasm in this comment and I am totally retarded 🙂

to be fair wilson probably realised he was facing a highly-ranked player early on. he asks if maurice is an expert before they start and wilson picks up on the fact that maurice doesn't even look at the board. and honestly I don't really think that wilson would change his style that much. his entire gimmick is fast moves, sleight of hand, loud trash talking all coupled with decent to good chess skill. thinking seriously and not pulling some dramatics would undercut his entire schtick which is why he plays in public in the first place.

I love this guy Willson! I go to NYU which is basically located around this park (Washington Square Park) and when I was applying to colleges and I visited the school I played Willson and lost $15. I had no idea how to chess in the first game we played, he checkmated me in about 10 moves. I lost $5 to him this game. I was embarrassed because there was a crowd of local crack heads and other people around, so I asked him for a rematch and he said "$10" and of course I had to be the man and try again. This time he checkmated me in 5 moves. I practiced and learned about chess for the last 4 years and now I think I am ready to take on Willson again. Hopefully I make it at least 20 moves.

I don't believe the intent of the original video was that the unidentified GM Maurice would win/lose to a random "chess hustler" but rather GM Maurice proving the importance mentality control in chess. Always be focused and never allow pride to blind you. "Victory has a thousand fathers but defeat is an orphan."
@davidodonohoe1773
@davidodonohoe1773 5 лет назад
Yeah I watched the original vid and it’s really annoying not being able to see the board and what’s being played. Being honest all these hustler vids just show what a waste of time it is to play them. They cheat and distract on top of actually being very good players. If they wanted to make 5 bucks it would be worth playing them and having them explain your mistakes as you played and lost. Yes I get that that’s a chess lesson but playing outside in the park for a few minutes and learning something versus being talked down to by a better player is no contest in terms of value for money.
@CrazyMFz
@CrazyMFz 5 лет назад
GM Maurice was never phased at any stage of this game. At that level of discipline and mastery, GM Maurice is playing the game in his mind - hustler may try to double-Knight physically, but it's impossible to trick GM Maurice's mind-board :)

The best move I've heard of was played in a chess club in which there were several boards side-by-side on a long table. One player, playing with the Black pieces, lost his rook on h8 early in the game. Some time later he decided to castle on the Kingside, so he duly moved his King to g8 and "borrowed" a black rook from the a8 square of the chessboard to his immediate left, placing it on his own f8 square. Neither his opponent, nor the players on the adjacent board, noticed the cheeky chap's crafty manoeuvre and White ended up losing the game. Afterwards, a spectator pointed out what had happened and White was awarded the win. Black reportedly shrugged his shoulders and said, "Oh well, c'est la vie!"

Peter Mahoney The guy even kept the money. Tried to give it back, was not accepted and kept it. Probably should have donated it but... since he was not owning up to the cheating back then he just kept it for himself. Since it was not a FIDE event they did not do anything about his title but given that he admitted to cheating and it can be proven statistically, there would be a good case against his title. I don't know much about the guy and he is probably GM strength but it definitely casts a shadow upon him and also, some doubts on the legitimacy of his title. Nakamura and MVL probably would argue the same. It's disgraceful and I can't understand how he thought he could get away with it. I know agadmator's views it differently and that's why I didn't comment on the video anything regarding this, more out of respect for him than anything else.

Nobody ever considers making up their own rules and declaring themselves winner, but the double knight capture is a good early philosophical change to chess towards questioning reality itself and declaring your piece in superposition and having your opponent look up quantum physics to refute the possibility that a piece can be in two places at once and a double knight capture was a mere collapse of the wave function.

I always love it when my pawn goes super saiyan and captures two knights using the Kaio-Ken technique going 2x normal speed

I’m suprised Wilson the chess hustler didn’t try a pawn grenade taking out 4 surrounding pieces in a kamakazi attack complete with sound effects. My nephew just used it when I thought I was ahead, winning instantly

Reminds me of playing a pool hustler in a bar, they would return a ball or two I already pocketed to the table and I wouldn't even notice lol. I wasn't even mad, I was more impressed that they were able to take advantage of the fact I was concentrating so hard I didn't notice them putting balls back. I assume for a more normal person who has to concentrate harder on a position than Maurice it would've been entirely possible for Wilson to get away with removing the two knights, well played old chap.

I used to play in Washington Square Park in the 1970s. Brings back memories. Not hustlers but I used to play one chess club refugee a lot, a master who was very skinny from having Hep-C. For some reason he preferred the park. Maybe the people in the park are more real.
