In this instalment in the backyard bushcraft series, I talk about the axes and saws in my collection. There's an array of axes from Gransfors Bruks, Wetterlings, Helko Werk , Sandvik and Hans Karsson. Also on show are saws from Bahco, Silky, Samurai and even budget ebay and Lidl purchases. Stick around until the end to find out what my ultimate saw is.

27:17 - I have the same splitting maul at my cabin. It is literally the best 'mental reset' you can do after a working week to just split wood for the weekend. Really relaxing and a healthy thing to do.

Enjoyed your video. I also own several Gransfor Bruks hatchets and axes. They’re quality built with great steel. You should try Tuatahi axes. They’re also wonderful quality. I recommend the trapper and work axe. I’d give the Tuatahi the edge in chopping ability.

Your pocket axe by Gransfors is stamped with the initials "LP" This is the stamp for Lennart Petersen, who is considered among the best axe makers in Sweden. Have a look on eBay, LP stamped axes are going for big money. Just a thought for you, if you ever wanted to sell it👍😝

Great video! I think I’ll get one more axe this year. I have a Gränsfors Bruk Outdoor Axe (plus Laplander and a Mora), it’s perfect for my day hikes in the woods right now, I use it to quickly split up wood put out by the park rangers (nature reserve area in Sweden), simple and easy. I’m usually cold and cold hands when I get around to it so I prefer the axe before knife and baton because it requires less fine motor skills hence lower risk of cutting myself. After the splitting I’m warm enough to make a few feather sticks ✅🔥 Thanks 👍🏼

What a terrific video;; loved seeing your collections. Particularly liked seeing saws and axes together. I’m in Canada and early settlers of this continent were encouraged to bring, among other tools, saws and axes. They go together, like soup and sandwich. I have some wonderful axes but my saw collection is very skinny. Some years ago I was selling cut-your-own Christmas trees from my property and the kid helping out lent out several of my saws and announced at the end of the day that the customers must have left with them too. I’m over it now that you’ve given me some good saw recommendations. Looking forward to more of your videos.

03:50 the coating makes it stick even more. It is textured and therefore creates more friction. This leads to more sap being stuck on the blade. Bhaco's also are very dull and take forever to cut. Theyre only good for small detailed tasks. A silky smaller than a bhaco runs circles around the baco

Greetings! You may well have more hand saws than me, but not axes or chainsaws LOL! Your first Wetterlings axe that you showed is, I believe, a Large Hunters Axe, being a big Wetterlings Axe fan I picked a used ine up last year and cleaned it up. I have had the Wetterlings Les Stroud Bushman Axe for many years and it remains one of my favourite axes. I also have the Wetterlings Forest Axe (similar to the GB Forest Axe). I do not do much carving, but I prefer to use an old HB 0.7Kg axe that I made up a shaft for. I recently bought from the UK a Draper Expert pruning saw, for 35 Pounds it was good value and cuts pretty good though it is more like a carpenter's saw with a curved blade and a little cumbersome. Nice, smaller Husqvarna saw!...I have a 45cc Jonsered and 45cc Sachs Dolmar, the Sachs is a great saw. Best Wishes, WS

Very nice, I recently bought, for work, a fiskars 8 pound splitting maul, after using that I won’t split with an axe agin, it explodes wood wheels apart, wouldn’t want to try felling with it though.

I'm up here in Northern Sweden and we have a large wood heater in the basement of one of our houses that heats two houses through a hot water system during the whole of Winter...well, I cut, limb, section, carry out of the forest, section again and cleave about 33 cubic meters of firework every Spring. All I use is a Husqvarna Rancher chainsaw, an ancient, good quality cleaving axe for the job (it looks very like your Husqvarna but isn't) and a GB Small forest Axe...no way would I use the hydraulic machine instead of the cleaver either, not while I have the physical capability to still swing my beloved axes. Super collection mate and nice to hear your thoughts on them.

Nice video, Scott. I've been boring Rob in my defense of the Laplander saws: great in-hand ergonomics and pocket friendliness. They're still my first choice for a casual bimble round the woods. I've often wondered 'what if' Silky made blades for bow saws. Cool cat, BTW!

I almost pissed myself laughing when you said the GB small forest axe was good for colder climates like Canada. It is a terrible choice! Too light, the bit profile is too narrow, the edge is too hard and well known for chipping excessively and even cracking at subzero temperatures that aren't even really considered cold. It would be pretty much be the last axe I would take into a cold weather camp here in Canada!
