"After the first six seasons of his career, before his ankle injury, Hill had a total of 9,393 points, 3,417 rebounds and 2,720 assists. Oscar Robertson, Bird, and LeBron James are the only three players in league history to eclipse these numbers after their first six seasons." The best that never was.. biggest travesty to the NBA was never getting to see Hill and TMac play together at full strength..
Imo - he’s in the conversation as an all time great - 6 seasons of that performance is a career most players would trade for. Doin damage in suns jersey in a lot of these also. just never found winning teams in post-season.
@@Xx-po1fu and he was better hill got a huge injury there is no telling who he would of been he made jordan look 👎 when he came out stuntin. He is the most underated player due to injury
Grant Hill has the most slept on posterizations in NBA history... he's dunked on Zo (twice), Ewing, Mutombo, Muresan (twice), Vlade, Diop, Oliver & plenty more big men.
Shot blockers get dunked on… I’m more a fan of seeing who’s guarding him the work he was giving them. Scottie Pippen, Dan Majerle were two of the top defenders in the league and he was walking past them!
Man, he had the potential of being one of the all time greats. I mean this guy played 19 seasons in the NBA even with all of his injuries. That's saying something
should have stayed with Detroit and should have never signed with Fila. he made some head scratching decisions in the late 90's, but glad he made a pretty nice comeback with Phoenix
as isaiah thomas said, if grant hill and penny hardaway didn't get injured, we'll have a different conversation on who's the best perimeter guys in nba history
So true. Some of these highlights are post Grant Hill injury and past his prime and yet he still did some incredible dunks and smart plays. Ex: Blocking Tony Parker not on the initial block but on the way down and finishing the 3pt play. That is something special!
@BOMBAATA Wilt Chamberlain 2K 20K Wade or Hill could be argued over Kobe, moreso Wade since he has chips, though Hill has a superior all around game to both. Wade and Hill played the game the right way, where Kobe would shoot his teams out of games and didn't always take advantage of good teammates. Even though he was lethal not that efficient at all.
@@rashb3994 fuck no it's a reason y Kobe played 20 years and they didnt and got injured earlier in their careers and how could the be better the Kobe when they wasnt better then AI..lol
Sometimes I forget how great grant was. Truly beautiful athleticism. Was never the same after the injury. Like Isaiah Thomas said “people don’t know who this guy was”
Young Grant was a force of nature. But his Phoenix highlights impress me the most. Coming back from such devastating injuries and still being able to move/leap like that, wow. What an athlete.
Yeah that's true and then you going to have to look at his thoughts to determine whether he is a hall of fame or possibly or not because if y'all men made it to the Hall of Fame after eight season and sustain all them injuries I don't see why Grant Hill shouldn't be in that same conversation
The Ken Griffey Jr of basketball. Both were amazing talents. Both had HOF tier first half of their careers. Both got hurt. Both were so driven and talented they both managed to play until they were 40 even though they were hurt half their careers.
Lol i know barely anything about baseball and basketball but i made the same comparison in my head. I have seen them both play and they make their sport seem effortless. I am a cricket fan and there was a player from Guyana called Carl Hooper who could hit a ball miles with barely any effort. Athletes like that are rare and special and for some reason they dont last very long.
I been telling people for years. Grant Hill was the real deal. Don't sleep. Pre injuries the sky was the limit. He had a quick first step. And he played D. Him And Penny will always be two of my favorite players. And imo the two best players to be derailed by injuries.
it's nice 2 meet u and i got nothing against u and hill but 2 my VERY best knowledge ur the ONLY person 2 call him the VERY best 90's and/or 00's player he faced jordan who i'll say was ALMOST as legendary as jabbar robertson chamberlain and russell
@@chrishandsome4267 CERTAIN people NOT 100% of people who follow it believe that and there's a documentary called the greatest player ever starring wilt chamberlain and in 1980 the nba declared the greatest player ever as bill russell
I'm a die-hard Bull's Fan but 1:35 is a prime example of why I always thought Pippen was overrated as a defender! Anyone who could dribble (and around his height) would easily get past him ... Hill, Hardaway, McGrady, Bryant etc. SMDH
@@Dirtymane1 true, if you had handles you could easily put a move on him....he's still a good defender, he had to adjust his game for the next generation of ball handlers. I remember PENNY scoring on Jordan AT WILL.
If you're any kind of basketball fan you shedded a tear or two for this guy because of his injuries. Easily one of the greatest "what if..." stories ever. Still a true fan of his.
For perimeter players, Hill, Penny and Reggie Miller did take over the league. But then you also had the war of the giants simultaneously going on - Smits, Shaq, Olajuwon, Ewing, Mourning, Robinson, Mutombo. Anyone who thinks today's NBA is better than the golden age NBA just doesn't know what entertainment is.
Kobe could have been over shadowed by him in terms of popularity.. Kobe is just lucky this guy is unlucky.. Kobe is really lucky all throughout his whole career.. Matching his work ethic..
Penny Hardaway would have been Kobe level if he didn't get injured. I can gurantee that. Obviously was a pass often guy but he would have been MVP level/ best guard in the league/ potentially best player in the league if not for his injuries.
He had one of the better fundamental games of anyone in history, footwork, court vision, defense, explosiveness. He would shoot jumpers or fade aways all game then all of a sudden dunk on the center.
He was the LeBron of the 90s, and would have continued to be so in the 2000s had not for his injury and near death experience. He brought the ball up the court as a 6' 8" small forward, who also could play just about any position if he wanted to. He scored at will. At will, folks. Unstoppable. Correction, LeBron is the Grant Hill of this generation. What if?
The only similarities to their game is that they are 6'8 scorer athletic SF with handles but Bron has him beat in Bigger Stronger more Athletic and better playmaker
@@animeanime-no-mi7583 but wasn't he listed as a point guard? people give him the title of best point guard of all time. grant hill could play off the ball a lot as a small forward (that resulted in great years in Phoenix) but had the handles of a guard and could create plays for himself. that's a point forward.
I always come back to this video from time to time. And after watching him on All The Smoke - had to come back again...his crossovers and the transition between dribble to hop step to dunk was soooooooo quick. By the time the defender even tries to anticipate its way too late...and its by fractions of a second! Crazy
He was triple double in his prime. Points, rebounds, assists. I think he led the league in scoring in one season.... Even with the injuries he never quits. Worth every penny if your the owner or fan or spectator. Sprite was a top seller i think during that time...
If grant Hill had never suffered those injuries, he would have been Kobe before Kobe and would have been in the GOAT conversation. He was way too skilled, smart and athletic to assume otherwis.
@@pooPbutwhole i mean Lebron's an all around (offensively+defensively) but doesnt exactly have the best handles. Grant does both but with great handles😁
Grant hill said on open court he carried on his crossovers but playing on slow-mo, he has one of the cleanest, smoothest, quickest crossover. He also had a nice change of pace on his hesitation, power dribble on his left that can blow by his defender, a sick spin that finishes with a tomahawk jam. Occasionally we see the old him during his sun's days but unfortunately the ankle injury robbed him of his quick change in direction.
Hill was soo smooth yet lethal ... Mannn do I wish he had less Surgeries and more time to Shine on the Court! 🏀✨ Day 1 ... Fan for life!!! DETROIT BASKET-BALL!! ❤️💙
Such an underrated and unappreciated talent in today's era. He gets so overlooked because of his Jordan and Lebron comparisons over the years. But what people don't understand is that Grant Hill WAS on the road to being the next Jordan in his prime. He was the guy the league was passing the torch to.
Two take-aways from that: 1. GHill is sneaky strong! Putting that 225lb body and crazy athleticism to good use. 2. Zo has great timing in blocking shots at the rim
Yes sir Congrats on being a Hall Of Fame. You did what alot of players couldn't do,have no fear and to never give up regardless of what you went through. You were an amazing player
Grant Hill is one of the greatest of all time. An all around great athlete. He had incredible hops, could shoot lights out and then get back on defense and lockdown whom ever he was guarding. He also had the coolest sneakers back in the day. #Elite #Legend 🐐
WHAT. A . PLAYER . jumps so high and he s so fast for his height and so handy at mid , long range. This guy had everything to be the new jordan indeed 😢
Yeah cuz we have children out there these days and no sportsmen. I like griffin becuz he keeps things cool while serving some of the filthiest facials. Just doing his business.
Look back at footages from the late 80s and 90s... lots of ankle-breakers, facials, blocks... the players and the crowd they cheer, yes, *but they don't go overly crazy like they do today.* I saw Dominique Wilkins get dropped by Larry Bird on a crossover step back, and people shrugged it off like it was nothing... mainly because they expected the defender to just get back up and try to recover... which is what Dominique did... though Larry still made the shot.
His dad was an NFL running back, his mom's roommate in college was Hilary Clinton. He grew up in Reston VA the richest county in America (Fairfax county). He went to Duke. He was raised to be competitive presentable, classy, and humble. And it showed all through his career. That's why MJ saw him as his legitimate predecessor back in the day.
