The Grant Stone Chelsea Boot is an excellent “everyday” Chelsea. The construction and materials make it a total tank, and I think the lug sole is a better option (rather than the stud sole) because it matches the rugged aesthetic better.

I agree going another half size down. So my sneaker is 8, inches returned the 7.5 Chris for a 7 Will come back and review the sizing again

i agree with your sizing commentary regarding GS. I wear liners for the loafers and i should have sized down a full size compared to my sneaker size

I use dubbin (sp?) wax on the earth diesel and the leather soaks it in nicely to maintain the “new” look. CF Stead makes amazing leathers. Note: When you first add the wax you’ll think you messed up the leather bad, but don’t worry, it will soak in after just a short while and return to the normal, new look. I think this waxy suede leather is superior to the chromexcel...at least aesthetically. It is so beautiful and so unique...really stands out. I’m becoming more and more of a suede and rough-out guy the longer I’m into boots.

William you are spot on about this boot being casual and definitley a boot for fall, winter early spring... Those boots will wear like IRON...! Super casual jean boot and love the color...! Grant Stone makes great stuff... (I have a pair of their Kudu boots and they are built and actually a little heavy but that's what you get for a boot that's going to last) ....Gorgeous looking boot Chelsea boot William.... This old timer always loves to watch your videos and I feel your passion for these boots you review... Love it buddy, just be careful walking the rails, I was an Engineer on the UP and that stuff scares me, so watch in both directions and after a quick shoot get off that "High Iron"...! Wish I saw this review before getting mine. I had the same issue. I was surprised by the long toe. They fit OK with thick socks, but a little loose with thin socks.

I would like to see you do a video on a pair of GS Maduro Shell cordovan Diesels or a pair of Ottawa’s. I would like to see you review an Ottawa. Also, I wear a 10.25D in brannock size and I had to go down to 9D in the 2 pairs of Diesel’s and a pair of Ottawa’s. GS really makes awesome boots. None is better than GS.

Your dead on with the sizing recommendation. I’m a 9.5 on GS Leo and Alexander lasts. For these I had to return the 9.5 for a 9. If your a D width go down a full size from you brannock sizing. Or a extra half size from your normal GS sizing.

I am actually looking at the waxy commander one and Giovanni @ GS told me to get a 9.5EE. For reference, I wear size 10E on the Leo last for a spot on fit.

I WISH i saw this video before i bought my pair... i got the exact same pair but i got the 10.5 and i feel like they are good... but they would be my favorite at 10... i have to wear super thick socks to make them snug which sucks in the summer... but i cant justify buying another pair (i tried to see if they fit better after breaking in... left foot fits. right is loose as heck) really dissapointed because they are a great boot

That’s my impression, Meermin boots look nice but nos as high quality as GS, particularly the soles and welt. For less than a hundred more makes me think it’s worth saving to get GS quality level. I say this because Meermin’s Chelseas in waxed kudu have me thinking…

How is the elastic holding up? This is my only concern with Chelsea's. I've seen stretched elastics on some similar shoes that just look bad. Do you have the feeling that these are quality elastics? Is this an easy replacement for a competent cobbler?

The combination Chelsea + roughout is unsurpassable. I already own GS Chelseas in waxy commander, do you think these roughout are sufficiently different? On sizing: I ordered both one size down and half size down from Brannock. It’s true that half size down feels loose in the ankle and instep, feet are not tight for sure. But one size down felt too tight on my instep (apparently I have high instep), but good space in the toebox overall

I don't think these are different enough to warrant getting them if you already have the waxy commander. But these do have the commando sole which is why I opted for these. I like the leather a bit less, but love the sole and style, so that's why I opted for this

How does the leather compare to the waxy commander like on the Taft Dragons?

You can get the waxy commander leather in this Chelsea boot too. Since this is roughout, it gets more knap quickly and doesn't look as waxy

how does it compare with the Thursday Duke in terms of quality, fit and height? the GS chelsea seems to be shorter... but the leather/construction always seems incredible

Quality is higher all around, but that comes with he elevated price. The size of these is about half size larger than the dukes and other gs boots

Great question. I think I'm going to brush mine with a suede brush and then reapply fabric wax. Haven't done it yet, but I think that's the way

Crockett and Jones uses this same leather and they recommend brushing with a stiffer brush and adding dubbin wax when needed. These are very easy to take care of.

@@franky3fingers337it's how I treat my Crockett and Jones Coniston boots which incidentally get better the more you wear them. I've very lightly treated them once, as I wanted to retain as much patina as possible.

I heard it's safe to order a Grant Stone in the same size as your Thursday size. Only note is that the Leo last is slightly wider than Thursday's size. Does anyone have both and can give advice?

I have the Thursday Duke and the Grant Stone Diesel (Leo last). My GS Diesel boots fit perfectly ( I ordered true to size 8D). My Thursdays Duke I ordered a 1/2 size down on their recommendation and they were to small. I should have just gone true to size with these also. The Duke is certainly more narrow than the Diesel, but I think that's just the difference in style between the two. I'm kicking myself now, I really like the Dukes but I waited to long past the return date to exchange them for a bigger size. For what it's worth, 99% of the time I go true to size in all my boots. Redwings, Wolverine, Frye, Chippewa, GS.

The construction is much better on Grant Stone. Natural leather insoles and midsoles are the most durable materials when it comes to insoles and midsoles(comes with the trade off that leather insoles are very uncomfortable at first). The leather upper is also great; it's equal to Thursday quality if not better. It makes sense to spend more on these if those are the qualities you're looking for. If you want a good boot that's comfortable out the box, Thursday is great for that. If you want a premium boot that will break in comfortably anf stay comfortable for years, Grant Stone is great for that.

grant stones prices for the quality you're getting is fantastic. I think Thursday is great but GS is the next tier up in quality, and even compares with $600 boot brands. I got their edward suede loden boot recently and it fit like a glove right out of the box.

I’ve only seen other Thursday boots IRL, not the chelsea, but my Grant Stone Chelsea just arrived 2 days ago and they seem incredibly well built. Thursday is great quality too, but agree with the others here, Grant Stone is a noticeable step up.

I have no experience with Grant Stone but I've heard nothing but good things about their boots. I just don't understand the pricing behind them. Most of their boots seem to be priced in the mid - high $300 range yet they're made in China. Brands like Parkhurst, Redwing, Oakstreet, etc. sell their boots at the same price point or slightly higher yet make their boots in America. Is Grant Stone that much higher in quality and is able to sell their boots at a lower price because they outsource labor to China? How are these other brands able to sell their goods at the same price and make their products in America (Spain for Parkhurst now)? Maybe I'm in the minority but I would rather spend a little bit more money and support a company that makes their product in the U.S. than to give my money to a company that outsources labor to a country that deprives its citizens of many human rights.

iirc i dont think theyre outsourcing the labor. i think the owner of grant stone's dad owned a shoe factory in china and he decided to show you can make high quality boots in china. to prove "made in china" shouldnt always have a bad stigma
