Grant Stone Diesel Boots Review and Resole

These were sent in for a makeover. The customer had a vision on what he wanted his boots to look like. So with a few conversations, we came up with this. It was a tough one though, the boots are 13EEE so the Dr. Sole barely fit. But in the end, it turned out exactly what the customer had visioned.

That's good to know. I have the Diesel boot and now am looking at the Brass Boot (wedge sole). I always lean towards RW because of their recraft service, but I just like GS offerings more.

Anyways I hope your head doesn’t hurt as much as mine 😜. I have missed you and glad you are back. Nothing wrong saving a penny or two sharpening disposable blades 😂

Interesting that piece of stiff paper under the heel. I've just done a pair of Crockett & Jones Chiltern chukka boots with a similar (but)grey(UK spelling) piece of fiber/paperboard under the rand, upper lining and suede, below the leather insole. What is really odd about the Chilterns is that they have a 360 welt to outsole stitch, yet a 270 only welt! The stitch continues right around the rand section! I see no purpose ... there are 11 ring nails going from the inside heel into the heel stack... that sucker ain't going nowhere, as you say in the US. Also, once the heel is nail tight up to the rand, the heel covers the stitches and you can see them unless you pry the heel away. The shoes have never been apart, the old sole was a Dainite private label sole for Crockett &n Jones.

Excellent work as always Steve! I own a pair of Grant Stones and wasn't aware of the fiberboard under the heel, little disappointing, but not the end of the world! They looked solid otherwise and are very comfortable. I'd like to see you work on a pair of Parkhurst boots, they are a Grant Stone competitor boot possibly with the upper hand since they use solid veg tan leather throughout!

Aesthetically I think the Dr. Soles, especially the half sole version, is the worst looking sole on the market. Half soles on boots, and particularly that hideous tapered swoop toward the heel are an instant turn off for me, but you always do amazing work Steve.
@Snugglez187
@Snugglez187 3 месяца назад
I think half soles look great on boots. Dr. Soles aren't my favorite, but there's nothing wrong with a nice leather sole with a rubber half sole. I think it's the best of both worlds.

Hey Steve. Always appreciate your videos and your skills, your a Living Legend My Man. Couple of questions : Being that those Boots are receiving rubber soles, is it necessary to have Nice JR Soles? on a different note : How thick is the Brass Toe Plates you make custom for your Clients? Is that True that the Original Triumph Toe Plates were double the thickness than they are today? I thought I heard that somewhere and thought I'd ask someone like yourself who's Knows about the History of Shoemaking being that your Father was a Bespoke shoemaker.
@BedosLeatherworksLLC
@BedosLeatherworksLLC 3 месяца назад
I usually don't put JR soles when I'm covering them up with rubber soles, but in this case i didn't have house leather big enough so I used a JR bend. most to plated are 1.5mm. lulu and triumph are steel, triumphs are just plated gold. There is a 3mm triumph that is solid brass, we only use those on double oak soles. the ones i make are solid brass and 1.5mm

I'm trying to understand the construction of this shoe. How is the insole only half paper? Wouldn't that leave a seam or a break point? Are you sure the entire thing is not paper with the front half covered in canvas? I'm also assuming the insole your foot rests on is simply glued on top and not the actual insole/footbed like a Redwing. This is disappointing to say the least.

When you're using paper, is there a concern that it will absorb moisture over time causing deterioration thus shortening the life of the product. When I worked in construction years ago, I was always facing the elements of rain, snow, etc. and the thought never occurred to me...but I've since learned from watching your videos. Funny: Selling point of Goodyear welted is the easy replacement of outsoles using old welt. Yet every other repair involves removing the welt, often for reasons of vanity. Let's admit we just like the style of construction and pay more for it. It's not economical.
