Grants Pass is great! I live in East Medford, born in Ashland, but I've taken so many sabbaticals in Grants Pass, and a Wild River Inn honey moon with Courtney E. Silverman(the inn sold me a freshwater pearl necklace as a gift for her,) that I've spent over a year of my life in Grants Pass living, talking, recreating, and working with locals(empty bowls project) so I can say with education that Grants Pass is the most charming Riverside town in Oregon when it comes to my personal preferences; There are many great, quaint, and magical riverside towns in Oregon. The people of Grants Pass are of a freedom-loving, Libertarian character. The town is thriving and is distinguished by a town center with a handsome number of forest parks, and trees amid the roads and development(which is an idea I advocate to oxygenate urban environments,) the heart of Grants Pass is barely in town but in the vast settled home and community sprawl that extends far out into the woods of Oregon.

Pulled off I5 to get a bite and some gasoline. We somehow got on some one way street that lead us out of town , away from the freeway. Took a bit of navigating to get back out to I5. Reminded me of the Eagles song "Hotel California"... 'you can check out but you can never leave'! Beware of Grants Pass!

Old school town with one way streets and clover leaf intersections - made me dizzy at first.

I’m here in Medford, Oregon just 30-45 minutes drive from Grants Pass. Depends on how fast you drive. I’ve lived here for about 34 years and for 34 years I’ve occasionally had to drive to Grants Pass for work sites. I still get turned around there. Many cities are homogeneous and easy to navigate with their checker box lined intersects. Not our areas tho. From Ashland to who knows how far north you can travel backroads and never get back on the interstate if you want. The mountains form, or dictate the path builds causing many bends and turns. Thankfully we live in a day and age where we all have navigation on our phones. You do not want to get lost in some of the areas here. You’ll know when you see the half burned down and still occupied fifth wheels surrounded by garbage. If you see these. Just walk out , drive out, get away from that as quickly and quietly as you can. There are mountain people here in more obscure areas like the mountains surrounding White City, or the Hwy to Butte Falls. Just stay to the Hwy, or the local stores, or landmarks. You’ll be alright.

😆 Well now, I'm up here in Eugene, and I'm not sure you beat us out. We do have our own problems, but I must take you to task for omitting one of the most wonderful things about Grants Pass! It is home to Jordan Fabrics, one of the most wonderful nationally-known (and international as well) quilt fabric shops. They are currently on-line only, but friends and I are awaiting their return to a retail space so we can come and visit Grants Pass again. In all seriousness, I enjoyed your video.

I was born and raised in GP. But have lived in other cities across the US. Grants pass has the highest rent in all of southern Oregon. Has a huge homeless and hippie epidemic. This place will suck the life out of you if you are a single person. Summers are always ruined by the forest fire smoke.
@youdonthavetoreadthispost.5850
About 60% of in town housing is rentals. There's an I-5 component to G.P. The county is not for 'city folk' and the po-po isn't going to come. It wasn't for you kid.

Crime, homelessness, one of the 5 highest rental rates in the country with a lower than average median range pay and salaries (that includes surrounding areas). Cost of living is 26% higher than the national average. Fuel prices are the highest in the country. Our parks have become dumpsters which no one visits due to crime, homelessness and rampant drug use. We have a racism problem, and a higher than average high school drop out rate. Grants pass proper is a black hole that is nearly inescapable once you transplant here. Livability rating here is a 65, and its going south in a hurry. This place used to be awesome 15-20 years ago.

I agree with everything you said. When I was a kid, Grants Pass was a wonderful, magical city! Now it's a dumpster fire, which kind of sums up Oregon as a whole. It got so bad we moved to the Midwest. People here think they have a drug problem but I tell em they ain't seen nothing till the go to Oregon. At least the druggies here have the decency to do their drugs in private behind closed doors. 😜
@youdonthavetoreadthispost.5850
Grassy Pants - Bring your rafting gear - ride a jet boat - hike a mountain - ride the Rogue - take a guided float for salmon or steelhead - try a car show in summer - go to the horse races - ride down to the redwoods - or up to the snow at Crater - Race a Duck down the river -it goes on from there. Don't try to bring your home-state with you. Air quality can be quite bad during fire season. You can't drag a muffler. Onion Mountain is waiting, but don't wander off trail. The county is 80% wilderness . We have search and recovery - don't expect rescue in these mountains - they only find belt buckles out there. If you are from California you might consider elsewhere - We have Wolfies ! Be aware ; You might wander into a Grow - Stay on the marked trails.

"Don't bring your home state". I'm curious as to which home state could possibly make Oregon any worse than the dumpster fire that it has become. 😅

Ultra MAGA is spot on. Visited here many times in the 80s and 90s.We fell in love with the town and planned on retiring there. We went back 5 years ago and were so sad how it has been ruined. Homelessnes, aggressive pan handlers, high property crime, illegal marijuana grows, drug addicts abound. The fire season filled with smoke, and winters with fireplace smoke. The Oregon politics has really ruined this once amazing place, as well as most of Oregon. So sad indeed.🙁 Paradise Lost.

agree. stupid decisions made by people who don't understand why we have the dams in the first place and the homeless problem is very sad but just gets worse every year. A lot of theft, and for the past several years, the first time we've been having hostage negotiation situations and a bleepin' swat team. Never had shootings until the drug problem got out of control. Have to be careful when the cougars come out, schools close down their outdoor activities since they prowl the fences. Keep your pets indoors. Horses? Alpacas? Can't really have a useful rifle when it has to be triple locked at night.

If you can remember a time when you didn’t lock your doors like I can. Then Grants Pass is not what it once was You are on your own recognizance outside of town. There are only a few deputies for the county. If you are not prepared for this kind of life then you should consider not coming here to live. The city of isn’t what you think of as a country town. It’s full of close spaced housing with a high percentage of renters. The money is on top of the mountains looking down on town.

Surely you jest. On the Summer and Fall, you will choke on the forest fire smoke. And if it's clear you will always have 100 degree weather. There are better river towns, such as Bend on the Deschutes or Brookings on the Chetco River with the mighty Pacific ro boot!
@youdonthavetoreadthispost.5850
Are there palm trees in bend ? I didn't see any ? Now Brookings is well positioned, and the Chetco is a bit special. But it's not really that far away. My truck camper dodges smoke and goes anywhere. I might pick Shady Cove but the shopping in G P is better for the wife and S C is up higher. Paradise is not lost. You just have to find your own version.
