What makes for good type, layout and design? How can you art direct a designer when it comes to typography. Are there any examples or tutorials on critiquing typography for something with a lot of type?
With the launch of a new newspaper magazine focused on the business of design, Chris sits down with Art Center graduate Minhye to go over some layouts.
Watch this classic episode from The Futur, and learn about art direction, typography, and layout design.

This is art direction at its finest! I wish every art director is like this. Like going the extra mile to explain to his juniors what’s wrong, what to improve in the design, rather than being really vague.

Awesome direction! I love that you are able to point out the designs that need help and offer suggestions without talking down to her. I've had bosses in the past that never learned that skill. And if you've never designed a magazine or newspaper before, it is a pain in the butt. You have to make every page of every issue look consistent, regardless of the varying amounts of copy and photos.

When I saw this video the first time almost 2 years ago I was in the process of launching my own agency. Helped me a lot and felt like "I would work for that weird designer monk for free if I get that level of feedback". Fast forward today, agency is doing well back here in France, I'm so grateful for that. But I rewatched this video and I still feel like working for free to get advices from you wtf Chris! Thank you so much for what the golden free content you provide us. From the look of things, you should start rethinking the numbers and aim to impact 2 billion people since you're definetely hitting the billion faster than ever! Cheers.

I was trying to find the reasons this video is so good, and it seems like thefuture makes videos like this one all the time. There is Chris, critique and work of someone of course. BUT, here we have example from thefutur studio, so it gives understanding what you need, to get in such kind of a studio. It seems more “real” or natural, like this work is for a client and this is part of the process to get it done (part of the process from thefutur sudio). Chris gives brilliant explanations and tips, as always, but maybe because here we have layout design with many different examples, Chris has more to say and explain, and can dive deep. So it seems like amount of information and its difference, alongside with overall feel from what I see makes this video so good and valuable for me. Ask me what ever you want if you need some more information! Sorry for my boring, unprofessional writing.

I feel accomplished as a designer because I was noticing your critiques before you gave them to her, but I wanted to point out that you had asked her what typeface she used and she didn't know off the top of her head. When I was in college last year, my professor asked this every single time we had a project or showed her an attempt at a design with a new font, she'd ask us the typeface. If we didn't know we were in trouble! 😅

Why do designers tend to LOOK like designers. Like their is a design to be a designer. They've designed their own look. This includes, but is not limited to; Bald head and sleek looking glasses, maybe some kind of quirky flourish here or there. I'm sure there are designers who can actually fucking see 20/20 out there shaving their heads and wearing glass (non lens) glasses! Just to look the part!
@TheFuturAcademy
@TheFuturAcademy 4 года назад
some simple explanations: a designer cares about things, including how they appear. we like certain typefaces, eyewear design, and fashion. that shouldn't be surprising. If you hired a designer who appeared sloppy you might infer their work is sloppy. can't speak for anyone else, but I'm near sighted hence eyewear. my hair has faded hence the shaved head.
