I hate to be that person, but Jillian Tamaki is actually the illustrator for This One Summer, and Mariko Tamaki is the writer. I've read Skim by them, and also Jillian Tamaki's web-comic-turned-graphic-novel Super Mutant Magic Academy, which I would highly recommend. She also did the cover art for the Penguin Graphic Classic Deluxe Edition of Les Miserables! I LOVE Jillian Tamaki's artwork and can highly recommend her!
I have only just got intro graphic novels properly in the last year but I've dabbled and Fun Home was one of my first that I truly loved. I also loved Blankets, which I don't have a copy of my own of. I need to change that. I have Space Dumplings on my TBR, need to dust that off. This One Summer sounds amazing.
oh wow, i love both your channels so seeing you both in the same video is such a nice surprise! i've been planning on reading "this one summer" for a while, hopefully i can check out the other books in my nearest library as well 👍
thank you so much for this video. i've never really gotten into graphic novels and am kind of intimidated by them, but this gives me some good places to start. also i love how you addressed the topic both from the literature side and the illustration side. perfect collab! xx
Spanish speaker here, you should have mentioned your book, Fran! it looks cute, I'm gonna have to look where to get it. Thanks for the recommendations, I love that I always leave one of these videos with a couple of new titles for my wishlist 😄
Never knew what the Bechtel test was, but I had heard of it, so now I know. I've been wanting to read Fun Home as well. I think I'm going to try and get to Blankets sometime after the holiday when it actually snows so it'll put me in the mood for it lol.
I'm so glad you made this video because I'm just starting to dip my toe into graphic novels (thanks to your Halloween recommendation of Through the Woods) and I was looking for more suggestions! Multiple people have recommend This One Summer to me, so that one is definitely on my TBR!
This One Summer looks gorgeous and yes, I reread books too! Also I was thinking of how, like in Fiona Dunbar's The Truth Cookie, Otto the bookshop keeper says how "books find people, not the other way around"... (^-^)
"It's difficult to know where to start, with regular novels you start with the classics" -> I have great trouble with this too! I loved your tips Sanne on try some popular stuff, and read a bit then put it down if you don't like it. "Walking into a library blind picking at random" is basically how I feel, but good to know you can keep at it and (re)learn what you like ❤ My partner reads a lot so while i have a big selection to try i tend not to like the ones they likes tho :/
Skim by Tamaki is also an amazing coming of age graphic novel, Are You My Mother by Alison Bechdel is the follow up from Fun Home it's very interesting !
Love Fran...and graphic novels. I read "The Amulet" series by Kazu Kibuishi just by falling in love with the illustrations. At the minute reading "Maximum Ride" series by James Patterson. Thanks for the suggestions.
I've recently been into graphic novels and seeking lots of recommendations! Are you my mother? by Alison Bechdel is also amazing (mostly dealing with her relationship with her mother, psychoanalysis and all). Blankets is my all time favorite!
Sanne, did you read Locke & Key or Saga? I feel like maybe you'd be more into Saga but don't know. I know they are pretty hyped blah blah blah but I think they deserve the hype! Great video, I really have to read This One Summer and Space Dumplins sounds rad!
