The cardio/energy expenditure is different. Neither one will fully prepare you for the other. Me, whos dedicated years to grappling, done some mma years ago, but mostly grappling. Id be gassed in a few rounds of stand up. And i pride myself on my cardio on the mats. I can do 20 mins in a shark tank, easy. So dont be too hard yourself brother. Once you find your grappling pace, youd be a problem, guaranteed.
Really? I am as beginner as you get but I'm trying now at age 24 to learn martial arts, specifically grappling, and since a long time full disclosure I'm really really unfit but that's why I'm trying to change it. Anyway when I'm on the mats doing the absolute basics, I get gassed in 1 to 2 minutes. I'd never have expected another athlete (you as a striker) to get gassed in such a short time even during your first time grappling because you probably have built up a lot of general athleticism from your striking. I find your comment very interesting. I guess the type of cardiovascular fitness is different and very unique to something like jiu-jitsu.
This was 20 years ago and I was trying MMA. Straight to sparring. Defended a takedown, by actually manage to hip throw the grappler but then I got mauled when I followed him to the ground. (Reson i followed him to the ground was that I was already so fatigued from defending the takedown, standing up, I and I probably thought I could control him from up top and get a bit of a rest in. I dont know if it was exactly less than a minute. But pretty much. I managed to defend the submission until exhaustion set in and my limbs where just jelly. Reality check. @@Vyantri
@@slee2695 I assumed you're a kid speaking in the slang/Orwellian Newspeak you can find on Urban dictionary, so I looked up that phrase and found this: "The "Passport Bros" are men who have chosen to seek out foreign women, typically from other countries, for relationships." No. Not even remotely. I'm a 45 year old man who has been married to the same woman for 20 years. 100% complete fidelity as God intended. My wife and I are both from the US. We live in China with our beautiful children who were born and raised here. How dare you make up a lie like that. You should be deeply ashamed.
Like Dagestani basketball 😂 Cheers man you've trained me for 5-6 sessions in 2002 before my ucc fight. I was with the Vigneault bros& Rodolphe. Keep going! Great philosophy!
We need more people like you all over the world, coach! One day if I become a parent, I want my kid to be educated, strong, kind and decent human being. Absolutely agree with everything you said. Greetings from Bulgaria!
Ive been striking for over a decade now in Muay Thai, Boxing, and TKD. I entered a wrestling class one time and got taken down 6 times within 3 minutes by a guy who was a head shorter than me and probably 50 pounds lighter. Gave me a real good wake up call
I was a runner and went to the gym for years. My first day in a BJJ gym my ego got checked. Got my ass WHOOPED even by smaller ppl. Now a year later I still have very rough days agaisnt the higher belts. He ain't lying a lot of ppl never been on the Mats and if they did they will see how humbling of a exp it is. It will test your mindset 4 most humbling experiences I ever had and I'm 30. 1. Being a dad 2. Starting a business 3. BJJ 4. Being married
Had my first day of wrestling today at ATT and i meditated a ton before the class started and listened to your videos and others a ton and it seriously helped. I felt very comfortable once I was in the flow of training.
@@7arb-f-15 Insecurity really. They hate the idea that with all their years rolling on the mats a well placed shot could put them to sleep. Look up how many street fights end with the first guy to connect a punch.
Better to start with judo. They will thank you in a few years when they fell flat in their backs without bashing their heads in the pavement while skating or something.
Firas, this might be the best video you could ever offer anybody rather be martial arts or for the world this is so much truth in this video that my phone is going to blow up lol
The Canadian government doesn't like to see strong, masculinity or individualism. At least under Harper we may have got outta the first round...under Trudeau, they seem rather intent to see us with not a lick of takedown defense, double legged, mounted, and tapped, 30 seconds into round 1.
i personallly would love it if i can find a wrestling gym instead of bjj ide start with wrestling freestyle or even catch wrestling and later on down the line incorporate bjj as an add on, the issue is finding a wrestling spot
Its exactly the same thing with the ocean.....for swimmers, surfers... You can talk all you want but there won't be no one there to help you...Iv seen NAVY Seals be dragged out (semi-conscious) of the ocean in Hawaii for being over confident...
In striking you can do wrong things and can get away with it with superior speed and athleticism in grappling once take control it's very difficult to get away from it
@@sahilranjan4749 if you are not better a striker you don't have "superior" speed and athleticism. You get that with technique. Grappling is just slow. Grappling is like classical physics, striking is like quantum physics. Striking sparring if done honestly you know who is better. Also in grappling to your point it's much easier to get away with strength. You don't get away with strength in striking. UFC the past few years the top are all strikers. The grapplers prefer to strike. Not because grappling is harder. But in reality striking is what you need to beat a bigger opponent not grappling
@@kratowol6703 you sure royce gracie beat opponent who was way bigger than him in early ufc also grappling is about leverage a opponent who has zero knowledge of grappling i don't care ifhe is strong or whatever is going to get choked out now strength matters no doubt and UFC fighters are trained there are many striker like Roy jones jr prince nassem great Muhammad Ali who done things wrong but. Gets away with it now i love striking position in striking changes faster. Striking is more like mathematics than quantum physics angles and distance control are very important too lets say martial arts in general will make you humble and dude believe me grappling is fast its a misconception of people who think grappling is slow because they watch ufc like you said grappling is like Newtonian physics but it's definitely not slow not as fast as striking believe me I grapple i know and I have also done striking you can. Martial arts in general will make you mentally tough and humble
@@sahilranjan4749 I wouldn't call anything that Ali or Roy Jones do "wrong" by any stretch of the imagination they should be studied and studied hard. They use technique, setups and speed. Nothing they do is "Wrong" oh and they both beat people way bigger than them. You can make jiu jitsu look like that when you are fighting people who don't know how to fight, same with striking or even more with striking Floyd and anybody he ever fought
Train him like Khabib trains his kids. Get him into gymnastics, calisthentics, swimming, and sports to train their hand eye coordination. It builds the physical foundation to succeed in wrestling and MMA.
i would love to be able to wrestle or even start but i cant afford to join a grappling gym. i live in birmingham where leon edwards is from. bjj is so expensive now😔 i train most days and post clips on youtube(i recently quit my job to focus on exercise as it is the only thing that helps me feel better). great video coach and i loved the shoulder shrug one too.also loved u on jre. your cousin who fights in ufc is really good and i love arnold allen too because hes from england and used to be at your gym💪
Hope you doing well, Coach. I would ask you, which are best "takedowns", sweeps, throws for tall men against shorter men.. iam 6'3" tall, but have a long attackable neck and my trainingspartners are most 1 head smaller. Its difficult to attack their legs and they are also stable on feet. I often wait for a counter but i want also be a active agressive, "tricky" grappler. Which attacks do you recommend, where should I focus on. Thank you!
Faras this is a weird tangent. I am a masters of social work student and a life long martial artist. I think all young people should be involved in martial arts if they can, but I also think they should pursue art, literature, math, science, and philosophy. These things are not mutually exclusive. Some of the dumbest people I have met are medical doctors, some of the smartest people I have met have no formal education. We have to be well rounded in this world, and not so narrow minded to think that wrestling will teach everything there is not know about life. Some of my most mentally ill friends I have met through martial arts, not in my "woke" anti racist classes in university (although much of them are also delusional). I encourage you to explore more than just what you know.
I think Coach does generally highlight the importance of being well rounded. Grappling, art, literature, math, science, and philosophy are all fields he talks about, this video just dives deeper into one. Ignore @Spacey504, he's just mad at life
I often serve myself a couple of humble pies in a day, just because I'm trying to do something I've never done before and you simply fail and go again... Also on the mats I'm getting humbles all the time... it's a great diet... I serve my kids humble pies all over the place... Best growup food ever!!! More and more people are talking about wimp all inclusive, lgbt and the rest generation... but there's a circle out there... strong people create good times, good times create weak people, weak people create bad times, and bad time create strong people... and there we go...
well i think like bjj i think everyone should take on a martial art tae kwon do to Muay Thai jujitsu wrestling kuz they teach u abt life perseverance and makes u humble
It's the coach's job to TEACH them. Calling a kid clueless is not effective coaching. You're more than right to not care, because as you say it really doesn't matter, but a coach should not be doing that. The reason he's going there is to learn basketball. If he had all the clues in the world, why would he be there on the courts?
One would argue focusing on wrestling is out of touch with reality. Wouldn't you rather specialize in living off the land and becoming a firearms expert? Hell learn to shot a bow, throw an axe and survive off the land by yourself. That's more valuable to me than wrestling. My point is it doesnt have to be wrestling. I see that wrestling is definitely a tool to shape our youth/society, but i wouldn't put more value into grappling over tending to a farm and learning to hunt.
Agree to a certain extent. You can't really go around killing people for all types of crime though. There are levels to crimes committed and throwing an axe at someone for pushing you or stealing some of your pumpkins you were growing is a bit extreme. Martial arts will let you break that man's bones and let him go on his way.
@@jonathonsmith8871 I'm not saying you would be doing any of these things out of necessity. I don't train martial arts at a necessity. You put yourself through these trials to build character. To see what you're made of. I've trained martial arts for 20 years and never been in a street fight. Two situations that could have gotten physical I was able to just talk my way out of. I go camping, hunting and shoot firearms all the time. I learn just as much from those experiences as I have from martial arts. It's about overcoming adversity and building confidence. I build confidence in my ability to defend myself and my family. I learn how to provide for myself and my family in an austere environment. My point was that wrestling isn't this monolithic cornerstone of society. Character can be built in our youth through other activities. Hell, have kids load and offload hay bale trailers for a summer.
that might just motivate your son to train even harder coach💪. thats only if he enjoys basketball(if not then who cares). the coach sounds like a fool though😂 and its great that your son wrestles. i think its the most effective martial art in the world💪
i started recently wrestling at 28 years old. Its i hight physical demanding sports. 1 week ago varicocele appeared on my left testicles from all the lifting and i can barely even move rn. If you are going to do this sport, i advise you to do it 1-2 times per week as a begginer. And of course do the coresponing weight lifting to compliment the sport.
I crippled many men back in my prison rules basket ball days. You don't want a literal curb stomp, stay the fukc outta the paint when I'm driving to the hoop.
Visited Coach Zahabi's house once. Saw the court at their house and thought it'd be fun to play basketball. The kids yelled in excitement "Prison Basketball!" I got shanked and was forced fed vitamins. Never felt so incompetent at a sport in my life. 1 year later I now speak Russian and am competing in the Gulag Basketball Championships. Moral of the lesson. Humble Pie is good for you.
Iwas the only one addressing the bidet sprayer issue in Norway, especially in the grappling gyms. U have to use water after nr:2. no one want ass juice on them! Apparently iam the Muslim with the balls daring to address this in my hometown. nothing to be embraced about
Love the opening line "look at the generation of kids that dont wrestle, they think their opinion is so great." They forget the no.1 philosophy that might is right!
Well , I disagree respectfully, if someone told my daughter was "clueless" they are gonna hear about it ! being said there's a fine line to dealing with tough coaches , I agree 100% kids need thicker skins today , without a doubt ! , but it doesn't give a coach a right to berate a child.
