Branford didn't practice with the band on these songs , that's what makes them so magical, he was locked in, especially here, this is the sound of God.
Branford and Jerry were so talented that they could perform with anybody. These dudes shot from the hip. I was lucky enough to catch them in NYC on 9/10/91. What a show!
@@krapart Your Life...!!!???... And to leave everyone else out.!!? Its the soundtrack to (OUR) life, live, lives,......Every1one..... Everybody's playing in the heart💛 of gold band...........heart💛of gold band....
@@osiris7185 its you are the eyes of the world, not we, hehe -- maybe you're thinking of 'we are the world' ? im just kidding -- if you look, this wasnt even my original comment
It is remarkable how none of this was rehearsed, practiced, or planned. In fact, Branford came to sit in on Bird Song in the 1st set. Once he passed that test w/ flying colors, the band pleaded w/ him to stay for the 2nd set saying, “c’mon, we’ll play Dark Star!” And as Branford tells it his response was “yeah, Ok cool, but what the heck is Dark Star?” Truly a magical night on Long Island and thank God the tapes were rolling.
@jackcade68 this was her first dead show? She must have been gobsmacked. I brought my homie to his first Bob weir show and John Mayer made a surprise guest appearance. That was pretty dope
It's insane to me how tight jerry, Phil, Brent and Branford are on this cut. Anyone of them could soar, Brent, Jerry, yet they reign in and let Branfords silky sound wind in and out. This is musical perfection. I've seen them all, and hundreds of dead shows, no other band played live to such perfection. They saved it for the studio & live was always a mess. Not the dead. Sure they had bad nights. But this. This performance right here is hard to beat
Truly. The counterpoint the four of them weave is worthy of J.S. Bach. And to think it was all improvised, and Marsalis had never even rehearsed with the band before. This is musical magic created by magical musicians.
Jesus good all god damn!!! Lesh is cookin' some next level bouillabaisse here. This is my goto get you to-be a fan song, and recording of it. All the gumbo is at full boil and all the pistons are firing. Jbear's playing is energetic, Weir is filling in like a champ, Lesh is plumping his heart out and the Devils are sliding and bumping. But the golden trio is Bret (GRHS), Jerry and Winford. Those cascading runs and just the way they answer each other's questions... THIS is the long lost magic, sampled in a jar, for the rest of the world to see. GOOD OL" GRATEFUL DEAD!!!
I saw the Dead in July of 1967 on Boston Common for their first East Coast trip. Van Morrison opened followed by the Dead and the main act was Jefferson Airplane...what a show.
My heart is exploding! This is, bar none, THE BEST version of Eyes of the World!. (Kudos to Branford Marsalis). I remember listening to it on my album Without a Net. Proud to call myself a Deadhead; still going strong after my first show in 1982. WOW, I really miss Jerry!
My god, this was so glorious to watch unfold. I remember at one point I and almost everyone around me stopped dancing and we all just stood there in amazement. Probably a little after the 10 minute mark in this. We were all so very lucky to have lived at the same time this spectacle was on display, 3 short decades of majesty out of the billions of years this ball has gone around the sun and we got to see it.
Call me crazy, but I've listened to this on repeat many times, and still, I wasn't ready to stop. As a musician, I understand magical moments on stage when jamming with others who you've never played with before, and this is an example of magic. Bradford meshed so well. The stars were aligned.
I agree John! I was in a house of people tripping when a former paramedic came out of a room; "What is this Band!? " "The Grateful Dead." I said. " I feel like it's rearranging my nervous system." I asked; "Is that a good thing?" "Very!!!" This was playing at the time. Thank you for this Kevin.
Jerry Garcia is an improvisational Genius. So is Branford. Together this group created the best Eyes of the World in the 30 years that the Grateful Dead played. And by the way, Spring 1990 was way better than '77. So was all of '89.
I like that. Eyes has got to be in top 5 as well. The studio is great with Phil's bass but these RU-vid concerts are f....no great. I would rate China Doll, Jack Straw, Dark Star. Actually there are so many beauties but Ryes of the World is a BEAUTIFUL song. His names Brandon ? He's fantastic
I was there that night. As a 20 year old, I had very little context to appreciate the magnitude of this show until years later. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED THIS SHOW! However, the passage of time has enabled me to look around and experience different kinds of music. The Grateful Dead on 3/29/90 - Hit the pinnacle for me for the amazing potential that music brings.
@@yankees29 it might be. I heard that the now legendary night Branford Marsalis played with the Dead was indeed at the Nassau Coliseum. It makes sense inasmuch as the Dead have played numerous times at the Coliseum- they even have an album “ Go To Nassau “ from a live 1981 show. All I can say is Let’s go Islanders as the Coliseum sadly will be demolished and the new arena on Long Island is being built in Elmont near Belmont park.
@@analogkid4957 yeah man I’m a huge Islander fan since the early 80’s. They aren’t knocking down the coliseum though. It just got remodeled. It will be used for music events from now on I think. The Islanders just won there last night so let’s hope they can sustain this cup run. So much history in that building. I met all the old Islanders back in the day. It was so much fun.
1990, until Brent’s mishap, was one of the best dead years. I saw the last five shows of the summer tour. My first shows were the “downhill from here” alpine valley shows in ‘89. I didn’t know what I was in for and couldn’t fully appreciate those shows, especially the first bid you goodnight in over ten years on the first night. People were going nuts and I was like, “what?” I didn’t even have live dead at that point. In the intervening year I put myself through Grateful Dead University, graduated with flying colors and was completely ready for those 1990 shows. Ah, to be 19 again.
Sunday wake n bake with Branford n the Dead..90s aint my era but this EYES slays me everytime..props to Branford for jammin and bringing out the best in the band..Musta took some balls but he/they nailed it!
31 years ago today. This has always been my favorite version. Having a good old reminisce listening to this tonight. Headphones, goosebumps, and tears.
I love this version. I didn’t realize it was recorded 5 minutes from my house. Lol. I used to bump this leaving Nassau Community college in the mid 90’s. 🤣
Too bad there hasn't been more recent appreciation for the "magic" of this song from music lovers-, let alone DeadHeads. I never heard such close, and comprehensive harmony during the entirety of my Grateful Dead run from 90 to 94. I was literally 3 months shy of my first show when this happened. The story goes Branford was a guest of Phil's, as he was a fan of his Dad. Branford apparently hadn't met the rest of the band prior to the show allegedly-...... All I know, I've NEVER seen or heard Jerry JAM on somebody else's lead. It happens here-, and its amazing. This is the song that explained everything- Pure Magic!
Nope, my college buddy, Jim, set this up. We graduated in 88 but he was still in Ithaca doing music things with Branford. Jim's family was involved in music and had Dead connections. Jim said to Branford essentially, "let's go to the Coliseum and jam with the Dead..." The rest is history. I was there and it was beyond special. Google Branford about this, he has spoken on record about his friend Jim being responsible for this special night. Miss these days a whole lot. Enjoy...
I love that you synced the audience video with the remastered version from Without a Net. It's best of both worlds. And let me just say, holy hell were they on FIRE this night! Branford bringing some new blood as an accomplished player must have had kept them on their toes
A top 5 version of Eyes, perhaps a top 3. Let's hope Branford makes a surprise appearance in Santa Clara or Chicago, he and Hornsby together would be awesome on this song.
One of my favorite all time songs. Gives me chills every time I hear it. All of the early '90s versions are amazing, jazzy. The 23 minute Boston Garden version is transcendent.
Why oh why can their not be more bands like this today for my generation? I guess my music tastes stick out like a turd in a punch bowl with my friends but this is music in its purest form, no glam, no lip sync, no fancy flashy dance steps just very talented musicians making great music for the love of great music, and I love it.
+DREAM|BODY RE: I was not saying any is or would surpass the dead. Their are bands highly influenced to bring it every night on stage and MMJ is one of them
I will check them out, I just like bands with great musicians in them making great music and like it live, I see a MMJ show from Bonaroo, will give it a listen too, TY!
As a college student I played this song for a high school co-worker saxophone (also valedictorian of his high school!) player and he literally let a fork from the breakfast special we had ordered hang from his lip. It is one of my most satisfying moments as a 'HEAD,' seeing this young kid just wook out to Bransford and the Dead
@@mindsigh4 glad I could help. I would suggest listening to and/or buying the Grateful Dead “Without a Net” album. This version is on it as well as other live recordings with Branford sitting in. It’s all phenomenal.
Truly Amazing . ..I was living on Oahu, in 90, and had heard thru friends they were firing on all cylinders. Well 2 weeks later on sparkling Sat. afternoon Jerry Band took the stage at the Waikiki Shell in Kapiolani park and never have myself and the maybe 1500 people at the show been completely blown away by Jerry that magical day. He was feeling good and we were truly blessed
I was starting a family and was very distracted and was not particularly fond of Wake of the Flood...................but THIS tune was another story. Loved where The Dead took this !
I was at the show too. The whole second set with Brandford was amazing. This version of Eyes was great, that is why this was on the album/CD Without A Net. Thanx for posting this.
Without a net is a very special album. I found out years later that the Help>Slip was from Nassau also. I made it to that one. This entire spring tour was the best the Dead ever sounded.
What a wonderful night... takes me back to my youth. How I miss my friend, my good brother. Little did I know many years later that this would have been the last show I shared with Rich Peace with a R Pearce.
Listened to this today for the first time in a long time. Every single note of this is magic, but when Brent kicks in those harmonies? Next level goosebumps.
each time jerry’s guitar playing is a story of movement and imagination, moving imagination, the dead where fortunate to meet each other and deadheads are fortunate to listen
Took train from New Haven CT to NYC, subway between Pennsylvania Station and Grand Central Station, then another train out to Nassau Coliseum. The roof lifted off the place and all the stars were visible. Chills were received. Jerry looked at Branford and played Eyes like…
