Thanks for the video, I have been reading and watching videos from Cerakote. They show an acetone soak, sand blasting and drying in the oven all to keep oil off of surface. How can you get away with doing this without the steps they recommend?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 3 года назад
You can use simple green instead of acetone, but you still have to gas the parts out and sand blast them or the Cerakote wont adhere.

@@BransonCerakote Hello again, I'm on the search for an oven for my DIY work. I see no reference to using gas vs. electric ovens. It does seem that convection or air flow to eliminate temp differentials in the oven is important. Do you see any reason that gas fired ovens cannot be used?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 2 года назад
@@7jb2 Nope. We know of quite a few shops that use gas ovens. They are actually much cheaper to run.

Is it oven cured between layers or just when all colors are applied?
@BransonCerakote

You have to tack in between colors.

Depends on the surface. You want it tack free, but not hard. Set about an 8 minute timer, then touch it somewhere where you won't see if it leaves a mark.

Do you completely cure the base cost or tack it out when you go to put your first set of stincels on
@BransonCerakote

Tack out only. If you completely cure it, the follow on colors will fail.

How long did you put it in the oven for after you applied the stencils and painted it dark earth? Is it for an hour at 300?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 5 лет назад
For those colors, yes. The only difference between 250 for 2, and 300 for 1 is the time involved. They will both give you a hard coating.
@TangoDown1911
@TangoDown1911 5 лет назад
@@BransonCerakote after applying the stencils and painting it, you put it in the oven. My question is some stencils can only handle 200 degrees for 15 minutes, so at that point can you put it in the oven for 15 minutes then pull the stencils off without smudging the finish then put it back in the oven for 45 minutes at 300 degrees? Thanks
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 5 лет назад
@@TangoDown1911 If you are using the correct stencil material, it will handle it. If you are worried about it, spray your final color, air cure, then pop it in at 180 for about 10-15 minutes until everything is tack free. Pull it out and let it cool. Then peel the stencils off, and continue to bake it hard.

Not if the coating is sprayed correctly.

How can I get rid of lines when I do multi cam? I’ve tried light spraying but still get those lines.
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 3 года назад
It comes from either spraying too heavy or spraying at an angle. If you aren't at 90 degrees to the item, the coating piles up against the stencil pieces like a snow plow. Cerakote recommends lightly sanding away overspray between the stencil after every other step, but you have to be very careful not to get under the stencils, or you ruin the pattern. We don't teach that method in our classes. There's no real fix once it happens. It just takes practice.

Are you leaving the high edges or did you find a way to knock them down?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote Год назад
If you spray your follow on colors correctly, you won't have ridges. The base coat is the only one that is 1 mil. The follow on colors are only ornamental, and only need to be thick enough to change the color underneath.

So you pre baked the graphite black for 8 minutes then applied the 1st set of stencils then rebaked for another 8 minutes then applied the last stencils?? That wont mess with the ahesion from black to green??
@BransonCerakote

Cerakote has different phases in the oven. It goes from wet to tacky to tack free to hard. As long as you get it tack free, but out before it starts to harden, you can layer several colors on top of each other with no issues (our max is 18). The 8 minutes is a guideline. The key is getting it all the way tack free, but then getting it out of the oven as close to right after that point as possible to give yourself as much "safe" time as possible. Knowing your oven and touching parts is the key to getting your parts in that zone.

When you were putting the stencils on you don't wear gloves. Aren't you worried about oils from your hands contaminating the coatings?
@BransonCerakote
@BransonCerakote 6 лет назад
I get that question from time to time. I've been doing this for several years, and learned fairly early that putting stencils on with gloves on was next to impossible. I started putting them on without, and just wiped the surface down with acetone in between. Fast forward a few months, and I went out to NIC for factory training. Not only do they not wear gloves, but they don't wipe the surface down either. It's honestly not an issue. If during the process you see something on the surface, just wipe it off with a little acetone, but it's rare. Just make sure your hands are clean, and it's not a problem. I wash my hands around 12-15 times a day. Hope that helps.
