Grey Matter: The dark tissue of the brain and spinal cord, consisting mainly of nerve cell bodies and branching dendrites. White Matter: The paler tissue of the brain and spinal cord, which consists of nerve fibres with myelinated axons.

Thank you for this. I have severe cervical stenosis and was just given my first MRI four years later and now found White matter brain disease. I had the MRI because the symptoms were very much like MS and I was growing concerned but there were no MS lesions. This helped me understand so much more what is occurring.

Question- So are the Nuclei in the gray matter of the brain self sustaining cells? I am confused because a nucleus is usually the control center WITHIN a cell
@Ginajoyy
@Ginajoyy 2 года назад
In this case it's the name given to a group of nerve cells in the PNS it's called ganglia in the CNS it's called nuclei

@salikte
@salikte 4 года назад
ganglion is a site where there are a lot of PNS neurons. Pre GNs are nerves that synapse with the ganglion. Post GNs are nerves that emanate from the ganglion to the target cell

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🧠 Gray matter holds neuron somas, and white matter has myelinated axons. 01:04 📚 Spinal cord's gray matter forms an "H," with white matter surrounding it. 03:03 🧠 Brain's gray matter is the cortex, while white matter is deep within. 04:57 🧠 Brain's deep gray matter is nuclei, and axon groups are tracts. 05:55 🧠 Central nervous system handles cognition, emotion, and consciousness, with a key role for the cerebral cortex. If this was a good video, it would explain first what a nerve cell looks like. That the "soma" is the body of the cell and the "axon" is like a cable to transfer impulses from cell to cell.. Then gray and white matter would make more sense immediately.

@violinsheetmusicblog

So why is the gray matter on the inside for the spinal cord??
@marklyne996
@marklyne996 7 лет назад
violinsheets it is the collective neurones initially collecting around the brain stem, with the white matter/cerebrospinal fluid coating the spinal cord on the outside.
@dannichols6261
@dannichols6261 6 лет назад
I can't answer exactly, but it might be helpful to understand that the white matter is axons (signal conveying 'cables') that are running UP & DOWN in the spinal cord, conveying both motor and sensory information/signals, and the grey matter is the cell bodies (soma) & dendrites (inputs to those soma) which interface to some of those axons .
