Hyde is still a great manager obviously but I personally would’ve gone Jackson(he’s hot, confident, and he’s THE guy), pinch hit Slater for Urias(Urias just flat out can’t hit rn, it doesn’t matter that it was a righty lefty matchup), and then kept Cowser as well(also incredibly hot, again don’t force the lefty righty matchup cuz this pitcher is basically the same against both)
Hyde is the kind of manager that you hire when you’re in a rebuild and just need someone to eat up losses, be likable, and keep the fan base optimistic until the team is good. He isn’t the guy that should be managing this roster now that it’s turned into a World Series caliber team. He’s shown time and time again that he just can’t do it. He’s as bad in crunch time as most of our hitters are with RISP. Elias needs to go out and hire someone that’s going to take this team where it needs to go. That person is not Brandon Hyde.
I've read a definition of "cool" that goes, "deferring judgement for purposes of higher deliberation.". I really appreciate everything you said Conner because, in the age of Twitter, etc... I feel that the capacity to not believe every thought that appears in your mind is a *really* crucial survival skill.
At his age he may not want to be a starter, takes a lot out of him and he’s more of a 3 inning pitcher, I would still take him over Povich and McDermott at this point
Good podcast after a terrible day for the Os. I completely agree with your support of Brandon Hyde. Mistakes happen, and they often lead to other mistakes (and they were brutal to watch Tuesday). But the most important part of a coach is inspiring a team to play to their best and while the results haven't been perfect, every player on the team is giving 100% effort. I think people are directing their frustration for Grayson's injury and all of the injuries to Hyde, people just want someone to blame even if it's just bad luck. I'm sure Elias will get tons of online hate today for trading Johnson/Chace to get Soto instead of another starter, like he should have known the future...
My biggest problem with last night was bringing in Coby Mayo to PH for Colton Cowser. How about letting the fresh-off-the-farm rookie get his first hit before we insert him in a high-pressure PH spot? Although I must admit, Connir, what you proposed (letting Jackson hit, Slater for Cowser) does make a ton of sense. And I fear we've seen the last regular-season start for Grayson Rodriguez.
Ifa year ago I heard "if we go into the playoffs with Burnes, Eflin, Kremer, Suarez and Rogers" I would have thought it was about another team and Kremer has been traded.
take care of yourself Grayson and don't worry about nuthin. You had more wins than anybody thought you was gonna amass and I know your disappointed but you did right by lettin somebody know right away
Connor - Have you ever checked the Orioles’ record in games following a day off? It seems to me that in such games they consistently come out very flat. Is this just my imagination?
The biggest bad decision last night, IMO, was pinch hitting Mayo in that bases loaded situation. Mayo is a strikeout machine at this point. He’s performing like Holliday performed in his first opportunity earlier this year.
@cowboysnation3472 No, you don't. You go with the splits. Lefties hit Cabrera better than righties. And Ramon hits righties better than lefties. He's only batting .200 vs LHP so if u really want to PH Mayo, it should be for Urias. Not for Cowser who has been 🔥
@@afguy79 I know champ, that’s why he’s striking out at a seventy percent clip vs LhP because he’s a stud vs lhp 😂 oh let me guess how many ab creates that .247 you love lmaoo Gotta love your average fans and their numbers 🤦🏻♂️
You're right about Hyde. But I think you are too optimistic regarding Soto. He might not be this bad consistently, but he is unreliable. UNRELIABLE. He's last choice in the bullpen if he is even in the bullpen to begin with, not high-leverage. From here in Delaware, I observe the Phils every day and going out and getting Gregory Soto, is just something no one whose seen him as a Phillie would think of doing
I said it at the time and will say it again the Soto trade was baffling at the time and why they think he is good is beyond me. Akin is no world beater but he is at least as good as Soto.
I agree with u on the offensive decisions he made not using his pitchers correct is what is killing me birch should of never been taking out on 12 pitches and I know injuries are killing us as well
Defending Hyde at this point is inexcusable. Find me a stat where benching Holiday who is batting 400 and hitting homeruns in his second stint in the mlb against righties and lefties gives us an advantage. Or a stat that shows benching Cowser on a 17 game hit streak for a guy batting career .000. Those stats don’t exist. If you think Hyde is a good manager at this point clearly you are just good at talking and regurgitating stats that already happened and have no actual baseball insight
I didn’t watch last night but I think Hyde has been under a microscope since the playoffs last season where people felt he overmanaged and was just outmanaged by Bruce Bochy.
Jimenez just got here so Adley pinch-hitting for him Saturday night is not the same as taking out Holliday and Cowser who are both everyday players at this point and the future of this team. I thought the moves last night were short-sighted.
It doesnt make sense to compare Saturday to yesterday. A manager who doesnt over rely on matchups would recognize when the matchups gives them a better hitter and when they dont. Mountcastle and Ohearn were the better hitters, Mayo and Slater were just not. It just doesnt always appear like he thinks moves through any further than the left/right matchup
Can Soto improve his pitch tunneling or something similar? Fans say he sucks but he’s got arm talent but his inconsistency has to come from somewhere. Maybe they are working with him on something and it’s not going to show immediately
Potentially, he’s gotta land more fastballs on the corner for strikes.. people are just sitting on that slider & punishing easy mistakes. I say get him clipping the zone or pitching more inside to block the righty’s & leftys & they will have to respect both his fastball & offspeed.
I think with the grayson injury proves elias should have pulled the trigger on snell or skubal.. now you have burnes basically fighting alone.. rogers kremer are super suspect.. eflin is basically 6 innings 3 or 4 runs.. when the playoffs come you need zeros .. especially when the bullpen is struggling
I personally don't think the orioles will get over the hump until they get a OG manager... alot of these decisions are horrible.. not even just tuesday.. as far as Tuesday why take smith out? Stupid move.... let holliday hit.. pinch hit urias. Let cowser hit... I think connor you have a great thing going with the podcast..
I think Hyde has good managerial traits but his in game management is not the best, that being said you can see from the comments and your take that we disagree on how the 8th should have been managed. I think Holliday should have hit, we should have hit Slater for Urias as he has been dreadful in general but even more so against lefties. Cowser was on a 17 game hitting streak and would have let him hit rather than putting Mayo in a big spot like that. While Eloy has been decent having a guy who can only DH take up a roster spot certainly hurts our flexibility.
@@billymartin5657 no team in the MLB can lose arguably their 2-5 starters and live up to expectations. We’re talking about being without Bradish, Grayson, Means and Wells
What do you expect, they say the same kinds of crap when it comes to the Ravens. As much as I love Baltimore fans, we are becoming super toxic in the eyes of the media and fans around the country. And that is not ok.
Hyde is not good. He relies far too heavily on lefty-righty matchups rather than paying attention to splits. Genesis Cabrera pitches better against righties than lefties this year. Urias has never hit lefties well. Mayo did not hit lefties well in the minors. These are the stats that are important, not the side of the plate they happen to stand on. This blatant disregard for easily available statistics is a Hyde problem. All of that could be forgiven if Hyde could justify it, but he literally can’t. He said he pinch hit Slater for Holliday because Slater is hitting lefties well this year, and that is OBJECTIVELY false. It’s clear he cares more about matchups than actual statistics. Also, the argument that he’s good at choosing pinch hitters falls flat when most of the time his pinch hit decisions come down to bringing in O’hearn/Adley/Mountcastle, all of who are good hitters, for worse hitters. Pinch hitting guys who are playing well like Holliday and Cowser for bad hitters like Slater and Mayo, a hitless rookie, is awful managing. I’ve defended Hyde, but at this point, I think they’re better off with a manager with a better feel for the game
He also rarely gets choppy at all. Not even a word. Not even a hand gesture to the umps. NOTHING. Just sits there while our guys get fucked at the plate a solid 14/15 times. Every now and again he'll actually do something. But I don't feel fire. When shit going bad he STILL sitting there the same. Nothing. I want to see him fired up a little. At least say SOMETHING to the umps to be like come on man. ANYTHING. And the matchups I agree with too. I've seen the problem. He also disregards hot bats ALL THE TIME in favor of matchups. I also like getting guys playing time, but too often the lineup got too many guys. Need to just sit the same lineup a majority of the week, especially the young guys, and replace the ones hitting bad. Need some semblance of routine and rhythm to keep the guys hitting and in the groove. Switch it up when shit hits the fan. Not switch it just to switch it. The bullpen management as well sometimes baffles me. Too many times he will set guys up to fail, not feel when his relief pitcher is not capable of getting the outs as they walk dudes or give up 3 consecutive hits and instead just leaving them in to lose the game, or panic and pull the starter what seems like early with traffic on the base with pitches left just to bring in someone who won't keep it scoreless. No feel for who is good enough to get out of the jams. Not playing the hot arms enough in those situations. Part of that is the pitchers but sometimes he really is setting his guys up to fail it seems like. Putting in Soto today is an example. Idk why we pull burch smith who's been pitching great after only .2 innings. Like if it's pitch count why is he out there in the first place. Soto should not be in right now in 1 run games. He has not proven anything and he hasn't done so all year. Just bad management and feel.
Hyde is shit. Real O's fans know this. He got uf through the 110 loss seasons and we all appreciate him for that but the dude is not the man to get this team over the hump. He is legit fucking idiot.
@@limjustajokel6269bringing in Soto in a game that you offence only has one hit is insane. If it was 1-0 and we had seven hits then okay, lets see him in high leverage and if he blows it hopefully our offence continues to hit saves him but that ain't happening when your offence has one hit; also you pull him immediately after the single, three run homer, double. Just terrible managing with zero justification for all his mistakes; I can see making one or two mistakes but I counted seven that game, completely unacceptable
I was hoping for “Stomach bug” or fuck I’d even take a “G-Rod kinda hungover today so he’s just gonna take bong hits and eat Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup & will start tomorrow.
Ppl are right to criticize Hyde. Pinch-hitting for holliday n cowser made no sense, imho. Maybe your 2 hottest hitters, pitcher doesn't even have regular lefty/righty splits.
I agree with much of what you said, but this is by far the single worst game Hyde has managed and it has nothing to do with the process/results. Pinch hitting for Holliday was a head scratcher for sure. I disagreed strongly with it, but Slater has had good at bats and did draw a walk. We don't know if Holliday would have continued his torrid hitting and tied the game with a home run, but chances are, he also would have drawn a walk. Pinch hitting Mayo for Cowser was wrong on so many levels and was the single worst decision Hyde has made. Hard stop. It was wrong on so many levels and very very troubling. It is not the same as bringing in Adley off the bench on Saturday. It is not a comparable situation at all. Besides....Cabrera has reverse splits. The team will run through a wall for Hyde and he is not going anywhere, but the other 29 mangers in baseball would not have made these befuddling moves. Not process driven at all. Results were irrelevant. Just flat out the worst managing decision(s) I have seen in many many years....much worse then Buck years ago in Toronto as at least you could somewhat understand what Buck was trying to do. No idea what was going through Hyde's mind. Then he either lied or mis spoke during the post game saying Slater has done very well against lefties this year....505 OPS. I love the pod, but you came across as talking down to some of your listeners who watch baseball, know baseball, understand matchups, analytics, etc... and still have no idea why Hyde did what he did.
The Orioles do NOT look like a team that can win the World Series, Conor. Not at this point. The offense is too unreliable and our pitching is absolutely awful.
Hoping to put Brandon's Hyde inexplicable decisions and worst managed game in recent memory in the rear view mirror! Colton batting .368 vs lefties since July 1st. Colby .000 vs righties and lefties. I used to really like Brandon and I think he has built an amazing culture, etc...but every guy in that dugout(including Colby) has no idea why that decision was made. Anyhow...beauty of baseball another game is right around the corner! Lets do it O's!
He lost me with Soto inning before the pinch hitting debacle. You still lead in a divisional game, at a moment where you are tied for the division lead, and you let Soto hang around for 5 runs with zero action in the bullpen? This isn’t a moment to be workshopping a struggling pitcher. Just feels like you’re giving it away.
Thank you for reassuring me that I wasn’t tripping balls still. & thank you for just telling me what I wanted to hear. I don’t know who they slot in for him going forward.
