Well, Gibernau for sure wasn't the biggest talent of his generation, as Rossi, Biaggi, Barros and Capirossi were. But despite all these things, he was the only one that came close to beating Rossi in his dominant period, with a Gresini bike which wasn't the same with the Repsol of Barros and Hayden or even the Pons of Biaggi and Makoto Tamada. That's why I think he's one of the greats

Last but not least, Biaggi was penalized too for the same reason of Rossi and this one was really angry because he thought they(Honda Team) didn't want to see him win in Yamaha. I love how you sneaked in Criville here. Criville was fighting with Doohan for years before he got his title. He had the opportunity in 1999 and he took it by comfortably winning the championship. The funny thing is Gibernau was Criville's teammate at Repsol Honda in 1999.😆😆 I agree with others. Actually Hayden is a very overrated rider imo. Barros beat him at Repsol in 2004. Dude had massive backing. So Barros was the one who got kicked out. Hayden got 6 years at Repsol believe it or not. With that amount of backing and machinery he lucked into a championship in 2006. Melandri is another rider. Beat Hayden in 2005 and 2007 with Honda machinery but fell a bit behind Hayden in 2006. But got more wins than Hayden in 2006. Luck plays a big part in these things. Even though Gibernau, Barros and Melandri are better riders than Hayden they weren't fortunate enough. Oh I forgot to mention how Melandri on a Kawasaki beat Hayden on the Ducati in 2009.😁😁

Biaggi-Rossi was only a rivalry on paper. In all honesty Biaggi was fighting with Capirossi and Barros for 2nd or 3rd place in the championship. Rossi-Gibernau was a real rivalry. Sete was only 11 points behind Rossi in 2004 with only 3 races left.

Biaggi and Rossi rivalry was more like war of words and psychological rivalry given Biaggi was often fighting for 2nd in the championship. In terms of genuine rivalry where the championship is at stake,Lorenzo and Gibernau gave rossi a genuine run for his money

@@chanchaniceman Stoner and Marquez too. I feel like Biaggi was a consistent stat padder while with MotoGP. Hardly putting a title challenge. While Roberts Jr.(1999, 2000) and Gibernau(2003, 2004) both had 2 peak seasons which were much better than any season of Biaggi. Biaggi is more like the David Coulthard of MotoGP while Gibernau was more like the Jacques Villenuve.

Yeah it was - I remember one season Rossi had kept Gibernau off the top spot for a number of races, Gibernau finally got away, he was so far in front Rossi couldn't catch him. He was going so fast, so far ahead, got to the final lap, final straight... Ran out of gas. Rossi zipped past him. He literally cried at the presser afterwards. He broke down in tears, and he quit racing.

@@matt5543 2005 was not a good season for Gibernau though. I think you are referring to 2004 and 2003. In 2005 Gibernau was very crash heavy. Even though he had pace. And Melandri beat him on the same Movistar Honda by some margin. Although crashes played a part in it.

Yes your right 2004 is the season I'm on about. 7 points between them. To the Victor go the spoils unfortunately. To be remembered fully you need a championship.

@@matt5543 Gibernau's peak seasons(2003, 2004) are better than Kenny Roberts Jr's peak seasons(1999, 2000) I feel like. Even though Roberts Jr. ended up as champion and Gibernau didn't. Those two had very similar career trajectory.
