Olivia Newton-John, Elton John, Frankie Valli, Stockard Channing, Grace Jones and producer Allan Carr party at Studio 54 to celebrate the movie "Grease". Raw unedited footage. Location: Studio 54, Manhattan Date Shot: 6/13/1978 NYBA1261C
I remember back when I was in my late twenties, I was a photographer. I was lucky to be there for the opening of grease. Little did I know that grease would one day be one of the most popular musicals of all time. I acutely got to meet Elton John and Frankie Valli in one night. That was truly the best night of my life.
very cool. a piece of disco Hollywood history. Access inside is quite freakin' awesome. thanks for sharing. I may have been 7 at the time, but I still wish for a time machine.
I wanna go back to 1960s Woodstock in NYC The Opening of Tower Records, and Studio 54! WHAT A BLAST FROM THE PAST! This is amazing I remember Grease I loved it when I was a kid! This is their cast party!
You could get a slight impression of how fun it was with this clip. It shows how different elements came together and for a moment made some great memories for themselves, letting go of differences arguably to do it.
I am so glad you put this up ! I can get a glimpse at me slightly ! What a night ! Infact every night at s54 was amazing ! I can recall when some nights the club used to be deserted ! He let no one in hardly ! Oh the memories I still have my VIP drinks pass ! In a frame !
Yes, this happened June 1978, at the absolute peak of disco and NYC nightlife. Most of the most prominent musics heard today such as hip hop, rap and house all originated in NYC during that crucial time late 70s early 80s when it was the center of the world.
My older sisters were into the disco scene back then. I still like listening to funk n r&b.Started playing then later teaching guitar. I grew up in the 80s Metal scene. still taught all styles of music which I attributed to them! Thanks to my Sisters.Studio 54!!
GRACE was there often. One night we were arriving and she was leaving and she talked to us outside and i was like OK GRACE but I want to go in and dance so she came back in and danced!
Run time of 6:47 - 7:11 of this clip.. probably one of the coolest people on the planet... before she even knew it. I worked at Studio 54 from 1978-81.. She was one of my favorites
she destroyed her face with plastic surgery. WHY do these women do this . And it's not like she was once a "glamour gal" like Farrah. She was very cute back then. @@shinmalpure2397
Remarkable watching this, as I was there that June night at the absolute zenith of disco and NY nightlife. I'd completely forgotten about the car that was there inside, the one shown at 316 being pulled in. NYC, the center of the world without a doubt.
I’ve watched this so many times on K and snow to teleport myself to these times and it’s amazing this and the Deca-Dance (1979) film are great I’ve been clean for months but this is such a beautiful snapshot of a hedonistic era
One night ( OK 4 am in the morning) LAUREN HUTTON asked me for a cigarette. I didnt smoke but told my friend she wanted one and he gave it to her and lit it. The music ended early that night but we went downtown to another club and stayed out til 10 am! Then off to the PLAZA HOTEL FOR the best EGGS BENEDICT!
Sydney Austin I went to 54 one time for a private party. I’m aware of the stories about Steve trying to have a mix of different people in the place. They catered to celebrities all the time and that’s who they wanted in there. 54 didn’t want the “bridge and tunnel people “ in this place. Rarely did an average Joe get in. We often went to Enchanted Garden in Queens where my husband comes from. We also had dinner at Steak Loft another Steve/Ian creation. I hope to be as sophisticated and worldly as you are one day.
Ever since I read the Andy Warhol diaries 25 years ago I've been intrigued about the whole 54 thing. But this took how I imagined it and lessened it slightly, but not too much. I have built up the mystique in my mind. I was only 10 when this came out (though 11 year old Anderson Cooper and Latoya Jackson went around this age) and I sometimes wish I was in the right age, place and the right time to have gone. But in reality, it was not all that. Though we're not seeing the balcony and back rooms.
@@Rhythm973 It was a normal club like 80 81ish onward. But if you got in up until their arrest (and for about a year after) the main dance floor and the special events were designed so that everyone who got in was involved in anything but a normal dance club and dance floor, it was for everybody to experience. Save for a few elite back rooms in the basement, even the balcony and barhrooms had stuff going down, sex was ignored by the owners and not exactly promoted by them. Anything went. It wasn't one big orgy. The partly hidden sex that may have happened once in a blue moon in a out of the way booth had nothing to do with the planned and choreographed spectacle out on the dance floor. You didn't have to be a celebrity to catch the themed party atmosphere if you arrived on the right night that week and got let in. You did rub elbows with celebrities. The dance floor was for everyone. And weirdness was encouraged, the weirder the better. The sights at any given night was a heightened fantasy night club experiece, so in that way it was anything but a normal nightclub experience.
I still have my BLACK membership card! One night GRACE JONES was leaving as we were going in and my friend turned to me and said " I Saw those shoes at SUSAN BENNIS! " lol i was like so what lets go in! grace chatted to us as we left / we would see her there quite often... i loved her shows esp the one a BONDS! that was a fun night too! OH i need to find me a publisher to help me with my STUDIO book!
I'm 38 now but as long back as I can remember (I'm thinking Back to the Future days maybe lol) I always said "if I had 24 hours to go back to any time with zero consequence, it would he the most happenin night Studio 54 ever had!!To be submerged in the crowd catered by Steve and just dandy and party my ass off!! Bravo for you actually living out my "if I had a time machine " dream 😂
I envy you. You got to experience that, to be in the right time, right place, the epicentre of what was going on (at least in New York) in our culture at the time.
Encore merci Jsuis a fond
Studio 54 got all the publicity but there were better dance clubs in NYC back then. I feel so privileged to have lived here all my life. Many will disagree but its the center of everything.
Yes thats so true. If anyone is able to buy even the smallest apartment it will be the best purchase you will ever make. I have friends that bought a starter apartment and rent it to make money. The place pays for itself with profit every month. Most first time renters share a place just to be able to live here.
i grew up at studio 54; i was a teen ager when i first got in. Nothing can ever compare to those times. I live in south beach and all these people think they are fabulous but only STUDIO 54 was CHIC!!!! so lucky that i got to witness it!
I was searching in the commands for someone writing about Stockard Channing, and finally found it. You did. Cool ha? I think the whole Grease cast was there. So there must be much more footage of this night.
Man that hot tall beautiful blond lady is soaring on coke (in the days before exctasy reigned), you don't get that kind of energy off just champagne lol
At certain points you can hear Steve Rubell’s voice in the back ground, he is close to the cameras, because somebody asked “Where’s Steve?” Looked around (you could Steve’s voice) and the person looking for Steve said “Oh!”
