The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, located in Great Basin National Park in Nevada is a spectacular drive that brings you to the base of Wheeler Peak. Starting right inside the entrance of Great Basin National Park, the twelve-mile scenic drive gains nearly four thousand feet in elevation. The views along the drive are outstanding of the desert below. There are numerous pullouts that give you magnificent views of Wheeler Peak and the small Wheeler Peak Glacier. This glacier is the southern most glacier in the United States.
The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive offers visitors a wonderful way to see the ecological diversity of the park. At the start of the drive there are many diverse types of sagebrush. As you ascend the side of the mountain, you pass through pinyon and juniper pines, a forest of conifers and finally at the top an alpine forest of aspens. There are several hiking trails along the way and at the end of the road, including the hike to the Wheeler Peak Summit and another hike to Bristlecone Grove, where you can see the ancient trees.
Great Basin National Park was established on October 27, 1986 by President Ronald Regan. It acquired its name from the unique drainage that occurs in the region of the United States. In this part of the country, the rivers and streams do not drain out to the sea. Instead they drain into this vast area of the country known as the Great Basin.
