‘Recreating the experience of a busy mainline in the age of steam’, was the subtitle of the Autumn Steam Gala on the first weekend in October 2019. They certainly achieved this as I saw eight different engines in the first hour and a quarter that I was there on the Saturday. I arrived at 08-30 and left at 18-00, tired but happy. Rarely running more than a few minutes late the performance by the GC and its staff was well up to the usual high standard. During the day I shot 6990 Witherslack Hall in the fastest and most dramatic run that I have ever seen on a heritage railway. I also had the good fortune to shoot a double header crossing another train in a perfectly composed shot, no credit to me as I just happened to be in the right place at the right time!
It was very noticeable, during my ride from Quorn to Loughborough, that the number of lineside trespassers has increased since the withdrawal of most lineside permits. Whilst I now enjoy filming on the GC without a phalanx of orange marring the shot I fear that the trespass situation will be exacerbated when the fast growing hedge, inside the carpark fence at Quorn, has grown unless, hopefully, the level is trimmed to the height of the fence.
My thanks to all involved in presenting the gala, I hope that this video does it justice.

Love that Greyhound. Double headed with the Schools class even better still. Nice one!

Thanks Derek. As far as I'm concerned the T9 is the most graceful of all the active locos.

An excellent video, as ever, thanks Alan. The gala was obviously well up to GCR standard, and you have a tremendous variety of coverage. Despite your modesty, the timing at 02:40 could not have been better. I always enjoy seeing the TPO in action and that was certainly a storming performance through the station. The audio, as well as the video, was remarkably good at 18:10. All much enjoyed. Kind regards, Bob.

Thanks once again Bob. The 8F sequence that you mention was the third shot of the day and I can always relax a bit when the first good 'un is in the can! I have to say that no-one does a gala like the GC. We could see 6990 on the TPO stopped for a few minutes for some reason, I don't recall seeing an outer home signal there, and I think that the driver must have been trying to make up the time...he certainly made my day! Kind regards Alan

Superb sound by 73156 on the runpast at 7:50! 8F putting on a vigorous performance at 18:12 too. Those mineral wagons are getting nicely weathered now and not quite as pristine as they were.

The Standard 5's were definitely my favourite Standard class. The 8F shot that you mention was my third of the day, always good to get a nice one 'in the can' early. Yes, the minerals are more or less now how I remember them.

Hello Alan, (2:26) to me greatest shot at your video: express train hauled by 2 steam locos crosses freigh train with steam loco. - Heinz

Hello Heinz. The shot that you mention is one of those that come along very rarely. I had only just moved 100 metres along the track otherwise the two trains would not have crossed in front of me. Alan

Why did the English keep using the ridiculous 2 axel wagons?
@Parsound
@Parsound 5 лет назад
That's a very good question Johnny. Wikepedia, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_wagon#Background , gives a comprehensive explanation, the salient point being: "...Despite the introduction of the all-steel wagons the basic characteristics of the standard mineral wagon remained largely the same as those from the earliest days of the railways - short in wheelbase, relatively low in capacity, restricted to low speeds and mostly without a form of continuous braking. This reliance on a large number of small, simple wagons introduced a great deal of inefficiency to railway operations. Railway companies had long wanted to adopt larger-capacity mineral stock with braking and running gear suited to operating at higher speeds. However the introduction of improved stock was always thwarted by opposition from the railways' biggest customers - collieries, ports and heavy industry. These industries had sidings and loading/unloading equipment designed around the short-wheelbase rectangular sheer-sided unbraked wagon which had been in use for nearly a century. Operations at both the colliery and the user end was dependent on loading/unloading wagons individually and the need to connect and disconnect brake systems or handle a wagon perhaps twice the size and weight of the familiar type was seen as a huge disruption. .."
