The Ardgour Peninsular has some fantastic climbing on rough gabbros which are part of the Tertiary Igneous Province. The most famous for geologists is the Great Eucrite which forms a continuous ring of hills surrounding the Ardnamurchan volcanic centre. About 55 million years ago this would have been one of a series of volcanic centres similar to present-day Hawaii.
Eucrite is a type of basic igneous rock, with large crystal sizes, similar to gabbro. The concentric ring structure of dykes which have been exposed as the volcanic edifice was eroded away are clear in both geological and topographic maps of the region.
