Alabama here too, I saw this recently, I plan to use some on my centipede in another month or so, I don't want to "Feed The Weeds". I am in grub and weed control mode right now, but am looking forward to putting this down, perhaps at a 4 setting with all else going on right now.
Just picked the Sta Green from Lowes this morning and will be putting it down tomorrow morning. The 3 week results in this video looks amazing! Big Ups 👍
Just bought 2 bags of that fertilizer yesterday, online shows none in stock at several Lowes, I had to drive across town to get mine. Probably better to call them, online resources may not be accurate, better if they can lay hands on it and set it aside for you.
This was a home run only down for 5 days and what a big difference and covered 5,000 ft for 24 bucks a bag you can't go wrong with centerpie and I'm here in Columbia South Carolina I won't be buying malorganite anytime soon

I used the only half the recommended amount printed on the bag. Got great results last month. My centipede grass lawn was nice and dark green.(compared to all the other centipede lawns on my street, which were all laid down as sod by the new builder last year) However, I just noticed that the lush dark green seemed to have faded a little after a couple of weeks. The frequent rain probably washed off or diluted the fertilizer in the soil? I'm fine with it, as it still has the best color and make my neighbors green with envy. :) I also noticed that my centipede grass have been growing taller and fuller than the others. :)
Here in SC : If I got light on the spreading could I apply this now in April, June , and August? Do you recommend throwing down some iron , at some point during the summer since sta green doesn’t have it in it.
Yes that sounds good and go light with it. Also yes it’s good to do an Iron app as well. I like to use a liquid iron right after fertilizing. It waters in the fertilizer as well
I couldn’t find this product, but I picked up sta green Max 30-0-3.For some reason the whole lawn came out in stripes . Beats me. I have a good spreader
Yeah 30-0-3 is a bit too high Nitrogen for centipede. If you did the bag rate you don’t need to fertilize anymore this season. If you need to use the rest of the bag, wait until May and apply at a half-rate
I would have to agree it a great product as well. Question- Do you use any micronutrient products like "MicroGreene" or "Natures Lawn and Garden Micro Nutrients" on your Centipede lawn? Also which do you prefer the granular or the liquid humic acid? Thanks
so I found the same StaGreen 16-0-10 at my local Lowe's. It's basically the inflation package with only 20 pounds. After just a couple of weeks, I am extremely surprised by the results. I was almost ready to give up on my current centipede backyard and start from scratch again. After I put down this fertilizer, the grass is now greener and seems to be growing slightly fuller. The warm weather probably also helped. Although there has been several day of heavy rains in the last week, so I'm trying to figure out how much of this new fertilizer has been washed off.... THANKS!
It's a great fertilizer but expensive at $25 for a 25lb bag. Much of the big box store fertilizers are very expensive if you do the math i.e. Scotts, Sta-Green, etc. If you have a Siteone or Advanced Turf Solutions in your area, you can set up an account and purchase professional products at a wholesale price. I'm treating my ~13,000 ft2 lawn for about $20 per treatment with a highly engineered nutrition (slow release characteristics, micros, etc.).

Thanks for the video. I picked this up. I also have some weeds to spray and some thatch to get rid of. I must of been cutting it too high as you mentioned in a different video. So I have to spray weeds, spray dethacher, and fertilize. Any advice on what order to do this in?
Can I use this for my fall feeding ? I just used a combo of tenacity and atrazine for my crabgrass. But need to do a fall feed! I’m coastal, so i have 2 more months !
Since you say you have 2 more months of growing left then yes that should be fine. You may want to do a lighter app/setting than what the bag recommends
@Centipede Central Lawn Care Would you recommend Atrazine as a pre-emergent to help prevent weeds from sprouting or only apply after the transition time? Also which do find is a better catch all post herbicide to eradicate most weeds in the heat of summer Celsius or Fertilome Weed Free Zone? Thanks
Yes I usually do Atrazine a few weeks after green up. It really helps with poa annua. Also I’ve noticed a great reduction of chamberbitter. Max 2 apps per year. I think either Celsius or WFZ work great in summer I would just be careful and apply either early morning or late afternoon
I would apply a little lighter than what the bag recommends. You could apply this only once a year or twice. 3 times would be pushing it and possibly over feeding unless you spoon feed. First feeding around May 1st then second in July
If you do 2-3 apps per year that would equate to roughly 1.5 lbs of N per 1000 so that’s a good number for Centipede. As I say in the video you may want to reduce the spreader setting a bit and make it go much further than 5000 square feet
The bag recommends 5000sqf which is an application rate 5lbs/1000sqf. That would be 0.8 N. Three applications would equal 2.4 lbs N a year. That’s too much
You’re right, I was thinking 3 lbs per 1000 but the recommended settings on the bag are a little too hot for centipede. I would say either reduce the setting and do half or 2/3 rate. It covers more than 5000 I found at the recommended setting
I mainly just let the rain take care of it but try to lightly water in after fertilizing. Aim to get down an inch of water every week if no rain. One of the positives of centipede is it is very drought tolerant, rebounds quickly
I overseeded our yard last Nov with winter rye and now I’m afraid that I ruined our centipede yard. We are also in south alabama. Any tips on getting our yard back? I’m so upset about this. I just came across your videos so I have hope lol!! We did do an application of msm turf about 7 weeks ago. What do I need to do next to get my lush centipede back? Can I use this now?
What do you think about adding Anderson’s Humic DG to increase the Humic Acid? I like that I can get this at my local Lowes but comparing it to Andersons Professional PGF 16-0-8 Fertilizer with Humic DG, it has less Humic Acid.
Sure you could mix in but I would prob do separate apps - same day….or just go with the 16-0-8 to save having to buy 2 separate products. It’s potassium is SOP which is good
@@CentipedeCentralLawnCare Definitely a tough choice. The Sta-Green product has a higher percentage of slow release nitrogen which should be better for my centipede lawn. It also has gypsum and kelp. The Anderson, cost more but also has more humic acid and iron. 🤔
Milorganite has good low Nitrogen and Iron which will give color response but I stay away from it because centipede doesn’t like Phosphorus and it’s a bio solid based fertilizer which probably contains all kids of toxic metals etc in it
Definitely not daily. Centipede is pretty drought tolerant. It needs about 1” a week if possible. Maybe in the heat of summer water twice a week. But one good rain and centipede bounces back
Does this have to be watered in immediately? I'm in central Alabama and we just got some rain and now I want to fertilize again. Won't have any for next few days. Yard is struggling from lack of water.
Thanks! It probably is right now because of how easy to get and affordable because of the SOP potassium and the analysis is great. I do wish it had a bit of iron but I can’t complain. The fact that it has Humic and Kelp is very nice too.
There are now two types of this Sta Green. One is 16-0-10 and the other is 30-0-3. Sta Green Performance Max. I applied it in early June. It's given me incredible results. I only plan to apply this once per year.
I'm coming from a yard with terrible weeds. If I plan to lay this down beginning of may is there anything I need to be doing now other than mowing to fix my yard?
Good question. If the weeds are bad i would bag mow to ease them spreading. Lay off the weed killers til 2-3 weeks after green up. I wouldn’t apply now during the transition period. You could also start building soil with Humic or Biochar now and apply monthly or however often you want

Asking for a neighbor. Is it possible to D thatch centipede grass? My neighbor pays a guy to cut every two weeks. The amount of material left on the lawn is staggering. It is choking the life out of her lawn. At this point it needs to be cut and bagged. It is not possible at all to hand rake. The lawn is too big. It needs some type of machine without destroying the lawn. I did a 10 x 10 area and literally filled up an entire garbage can
It is possible but since centipede is stolons only (runners above ground) you risk doing some damage easily. If he doesn’t bag at any point I’m not sure how beneficial that would be. It sounds like it’s probably more debris and clippings than thatch. If they aren’t willing to bag or rake up the clippings then they just need to cut more often so the clippings won’t suffocate the lawn
I agree with CentipedeCentralLawnCare cutting more often the two biggest mistakes people make with lawns is not enough irrigation and the biggest one I seen is mowing alot of people out of habit or just not knowing does the every 2 weeks mowing deal where they let the grass grow and every 2 weeks you see everyone then lower the mower to the lowest setting and then mow what ends up happening is the lawn stresses out and the grass ends up dying and thinning out leaving weeds to infest the lawn people need to get in a habit of mowing often at least once a week if you have a little more time twice a week that trains the grass to get its roots deep and get more resistance to drought and Disease and also if they can give deep but infrequent watering i know everyone doesn't have irrigation like some of us but they can try but if not at least mow very frequent not every 2 weeks I've seen a lot of lawns in my neighborhood look bad in a short amount of time from that and now they need a total lawn renovation right now I have the best lawn in the neighborhood everyone gives me compliments on my kentucky bluegrass lawn saying it looks like a baseball field and also considering im in the transition zone where a of people are not brave enough to try kentucky bluegrass cause its a challenge here without irrigation makes me feel good about my hard work but mowing frequently and me having my orbit bhyve irrigation system has kept my lawn looking good fertilizers is only as good as the care given to the lawn its like a supplement basically get mowing and watering right and then you can start hitting the fertilizers but this is a good fertilizer I use it myself cause good soil health leads to a healthy lawn lol sorry for the long post I couldn't resist I have learn alot about lawn care over these last 3 years and thought I would share some knowledge.
I have centipede grass also. I have no experience with it coming down from the north. But even though it’s 95° every day the grass is beautiful. I cut it every Monday down to 2 inches. Let me ask you guys a question. Miracle Gro lawn food? Would you try it on centipede grass? I’ve reached out to miracle Gro, but no one’s gotten back to me just trying to get a little color.
My neighbor also uses a company that puts down fertilizer at the beginning of the season. I try to explain to them that he is using the wrong fertilizer. Centipede grass is different. Two days after he fertilizers literally half the lawn is petrified, bone dry dead they have to wait till almost the end of summer before it starts growing back. Such an eyesore, but they won’t listen.
Not every mow but when there are particular weeds like chamberbitter that spread weed seeds I try to bag mow for sure. I have a video on pros/cons of bag mowing if you want to check it out
