Amazing production, explaining everything in less than 10 minutes and if there’s something I don’t get I can always rewatch. All of your videos are not only precise and in depth but also incredibly pedagogical and make you aware of common mistakes, etc. Great work!

Thanks Lloyd.....this was super helpful......my fwd cross rolls have improved no end because of this video.....such good reminders in here....especially bringing the free leg in close to the skating leg, that made a huge difference to me...I’m now up to doing the advanced cross rolls.

Shoulders and hips square and the travel movement of the free leg were very helpful. I had a problem getting thrown off the curve on my "OK side" due to twisting. And I guess my free leg wandering forward in a big circle instead of passing close by - right before transferring - added to that loss of control. Good. Tomorrow's exercises are set :'D

Glad to hear the video was helpful for you! It is also NOT incorrect to prepare the shoulders for the new circle before changing feet (as opposed to staying square). This happens as you move your foot through, while staying on the outside edge you change your shoulder to face the new circle. This is just a more aggressive technique that can help with very deep edges. It isn't necessarily recommended for beginners though as it can sometimes cause them to change to the inside edge instead of staying on an outside edge.

@@IceCoachOnline That would explain why it felt "difficult" but not "off". Im 30, I'm skating for fun (and due to the sad lack of volunteer coaches for our hobby group calling me to duty :'D). And the one thing I really really would like to achieve is deep edges and doing simple steps in flowing motions. Jeffrey Buttle's in-synch fluent steps to music are a source of absolute fascination to me. I can sometimes recognise his students in competitions before looking at their coach or knowing anything else about them. If building a proper base with beginner technique before switching to more aggressive ones can bring me even a 1/10 close to that fluency, I'll do it! (+_+) Very very patiently! That said, you guys look so elegant on ice (even in blooper videos 😋), it's a joy to learn with you.

Thank you, we're happy to hear you enjoyed it. Some moves, we like to break down in more detail for people, and others are more "quick tips" for people that don't want an in depth long video. Please let us know if any of our shorter videos feel like they are too brief on their instruction and we'll be sure to break it down further/potentially make a longer video covering the same move.

I somehow get the feeling that this (unnamed?) guy would be a very demanding coach! ;-) (But also likely a very good one long-term.) As a beginning figure skater I find ALL these things to keep in mind at once to be more than a bit challenging- but I hope to persevere and keep reviewing these techniques.

Hi, Coach Lloyd here! There is a lot of information in this video as it shows the different stages of forward crossrolls. Starting off with the most basic form, up to a very advanced version. The reason I made the video this way is that our audience has a very mixed level of skating! So it can be a little overwhelming at first. The best thing to do is start practicing the most basic version, but have the common mistakes in the back of your mind so you know what to avoid doing. Review the video in your own time as you improve, and if you have any questions let myself or Jono know!

I wish i'd seen this video 13 weeks ago, before I broke my tibia and fibula doing cross roll. I think i was getting ahead of myself and doing more complex versions before I could do the very basic one. Had to have 2 surgeries and a titanium rod and pins put into my leg. Never mind, i'll be back to it, when I fully heal in some months time.

@@iristodorovic625 I'm really sorry to hear of such an injury. Hope you heal well and can continue skating... carefully.

Is this skill easier to practice than forward-crossover? As in I learn this before forward crossover?
@cindytong173

Thank you for another great tutorial!! :) in terms of learning sequence, is crossroll after/more difficult than crossover? also since there's the curve pattern, should I be able to do the outside edge move (the one in beginner mif test) before trying this one?
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 года назад
Hi Cindy, Great question! Yes the crossroll is more advanced than the crossover. Ideally you will be comfortable holding a forward outside edge on a circle, and also doing continuous forward outside edges. But there is no harm giving crossrolls a try before you master these moves. Don't forget, there is a lot more content on my website too, 3x more tutorial videos. There is a lot of content covering how to get over outside edges correctly.

How long will it take to be able to skate like that?
@IceCoachOnline
@IceCoachOnline 4 года назад
It varies from person to person. The best way to get there is to set weekly and monthly goals that are realistic to achieve. You will see yourself improve better like this. As with any sport, it takes practice and time to improve.
