This is brilliant, in several places. I will bloviate later, but this pass at 13:00 is textbook, for experienced skippers. I once had a guy doing 30, just drop his throttle and create flat water behind me, then just idle past me. I also idled. Took a few seconds. As he passed me I said on 16, "Captain, that was the most brilliant pass I have ever seen. He adjusted to starboard, throttled up, turned around and bowed. Being courteous and safe towards other boaters is our mission.

Love that kinda talk, "keeping it between the sticks"! Beautiful day for the crossing. Love your cross checking techniques. "The art of a slow pass." Good talk.

I dread crossing that lake with all the stories of rocks I hear there

It's not so bad if you can assure that you are in the channel. Also the army corps of engineers post the water level daily on the lake.

What a great video. I get nervous when I see those locks. I have no experience at all with them, but I sure would love the opportunity to learn how to navigate my way around the Great American Loop. Thanks for the excellent video. I enjoyed it.

Back in the days I was in the Coast Guard, when my Cutter had come out of a yard in Tampa Bay, the Skipper and XO looked at crossing the lake in our 95' boat, but I think the water was too low for us to make the trip so we went around the bottom of the peninsula to get back to the east coast. I kind of wished we had made that trip across the canal and lake. I am glad the trip other than the sailboat stealing the first position through the bridges went without incident.

Yes, the lake can get shallow, especially during the summer months. The Army Corps of Engineers has a gage that has the water level for Route 1 (Across the Lake) and Route 2 (the Rim or southern route). I would guess a 95' Cutter had a draft that is greater than 8', but don't know. I have always thought the USCG is one of the most diverse services and love the daring rescue videos on TV. Thanks for your service to our great country!

This is by far the best Great Loop channel on RU-vid! Maybe Kim Russo, you all's AGLCA Director can take some lessons Keep up the great work and stay safe. I enjoyed telling the Franklin lock master that her voice was featured on RU-vid when you guys made that passage, she got a kick out of that.

That run was always a fun trip. Living in Stuart for 40 years made that Stuart to Ft. Myers run many times. With Lake Okeechobee being shallow it can get quite rough with passing cold fronts or windy days.

Passing a vessel on her starboard side is passing on the one, meaning one bell. Passing on the two is passing to port, or two bells.

You are higher in your boat than some. So your LOS is longer.

Yes, that is true! We sit at about 12' above the waterline.

2 years college 80-82 at Florida Institute of Technology in Jensen Beach. Right there next to Stuart, the Sailfish Capitol of the World. 😂 Jack Nicholas' built golf course on south end of Hutchinson Island. Sailfish Point. Watched dump trucks carrying beds loaded with palm trees out there to line course. Benni Hahna (sp) Japanese steaks house. One of 4 in the world at the time, which might hint at money in area. Ralph Evinrude of outboard motor fame had plantation near school and kept us funded to stay open because wife Francis Langford of early movie fame had marina there and didn't want land sold for condos and mess up her marina. 110 ft yacht parked there capable of trans Atlantic crossings. Said she had temper and if mad at Ralph took it over to France for month or two.
