He had another part that was cut, you can see it online or on the dvd extras. I think he monologued a bit then got assasinated by the snake cult, but Conan didn't know because he was off on the mission so whether or not he got all those riches promised in the end is another question.

Sydow is in this film for roughly 3 minutes and manages to flesh out an entire character- what you can clearly see was once a great and likely tactful man, a ‘usurper,’ and has now faced so many troubles such as Thulsa Doom that he’s been reduced to old, drunken state. Absolute gem of a scene, in a film full of gems.

You do feel for him. Perhaps not a very good man, maybe sometimes cruel himself. But the one thing that he truly cherishes after years of rulership have made him jaded and worn, is his daughter. He knows sending these rogues to rescue her is a gamble, but he's that desperate.

Agreed 100%. The greatest of sorrows indeed. A guy named Ralph Waldo Emerson spoke of it when he lost his 5 year old son to scarlet fever on January 7, 1842. He wrote this letter to a friend afterwards: "You can never know how much of life is taken from me. For as of a few weeks ago, I accounted myself a very rich man, and now, the poorest of all" Here's to the poorest of all.

It is similar to Raul Julia's role in Street Fighter, no one will call that one a great movie (maybe a fun one if one grew up at that time) but Julia who was dying of cancer gave it his all because his sons were big fans of the video game so for him it was a chance to leave them something memorable.

I have always loved the reaction from Valeria when the King spills the gemstones. She is a thief at heart, and as he throws at them riches beyond their wildest dreams, she cannot restrain herself, her first impulse is to fall to her knees and start grabbing the gems. Only after a moment she realizes what she is doing, she looks up at the King and listens to the rest of his story. It always seemed to me like a very genuine reaction, giving the character a lot of characterisation without a single line of dialogue.

King Osric sees his youthful self in the exploits of these 3 'thieves'. He's one of the few moderately powerful kings remaining that's outlived his being able to stop Thulsa Doom at least physically, but he sees hope in a fellow Northerner. While Max steals this scene it's still comical seeing those three look away and down at the floor while he first scolds them like children. I never noticed the female 'attendant' by the throne that stares at the snake dagger with fear and loathing.

There are many things I really like about older films that you don't see anymore. For example, in this scene, when King Osric is speaking, they put the camera on him... and they just leave it there. There are a few cuts to Conan and crew's faces, but for the most part the camera just stays still on Osric's face. And I love it. I don't think today's directors are brave enough to keep it minimalistic like this anymore. If someone made this scene with the same dialogue today, they would probably cut the camera more often, they would have background music playing, they would have the camera very slowly zooming in towards (or out away from) Osric's face as he's speaking, or maybe they'd have the camera pan from one side to the other, etc. Like they are afraid that the actor's skills in monologue delivery aren't enough on their own to carry the scene. They are, in my opinion, but maybe today's average movie-goer is too high-maintenance with too short of an attention span, so directors are correct do add such extra little things. It's too bad, because scenes like this are powerful in their simplicity. The script is superb, the actor's skills are superb, and that's all you need. No extra camera tricks or editing tricks.

This character is onscreen for not more than 3 minutes yet has such a powerful role over the movie. Being at almost all times on the mind of viewer. What a great scene, the impact it leaves basically sets up the rest of the movie and gives both Conan and the viewer an action (mental for the viewer and physical for Conan) to undertake and at the same time gives a predictable outcome for the movie which the plot subverts after the party/attempted assault scene

Hollywood and for that matter, all of the first world's civilizations, are a bunch of blue pilled simps. Each trying to outdo the other in terms of pandering to these feminazis. Other than a movie here or there, when are we shown that men are even capable of loving their children? A day hardly passes without a movie, show, or an advertisement being shown demonstrating a mother's love. These female babysitters are given sole physical custody of the children over 85% of the time but demonstrate no ability or even willingness to carry their own weight to get/maintain a job so that they can provide for said child. Laws are passed and enforced to give these egg donors money from the fathers but with absolutely no accounting that the money is actually used on the children themselves. For the children's sake, we need to return to the days whoever has physical custody of the children is the one financially responsible for said children. Stop telling men that you love your child, show us that you do by working for a living like the rest of us. Returning back to the movie, for the life of me, I don't know how that line, "all that is left is a father's love for his child" got slipped in with all these man-haters about, but I must say, hearing that line hits deep for me. I know other fathers must feel the same way but you would never know it since the arrival of the Hate-All-Men group aka Feminists. Sorry for the long rant but this nonsense needs to stop.

@@gmoney5709 I believe it's because this movie was done in 1982. Before the feminazis and the fan-the-flames-of-hate media came to power in this Country. To your other point, yes, family court is extremely one-sided. I went through it, and I know several others. All of us have an issue with how something was handled. But of course, if you say anything about how it isn't right, you are just a dead-beat who doesn't want to pay (even though all my payments were in full, and on time).

"There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when gold loses it's luster, and the throne room becomes a prison". Every time I hear this part, I always think of the first scenes when Conan and Subotai didn't even have mounts, and ran from city to city, eating lousy street vendor food, and that's also around the time they met Valeria, forming true friendships and love that cannot be bought with all the money in the world. Once a great conqueror and warrior, now a king w/ all the riches he could ask for including a tray covered in precious stones yet he carelessly tosses it to the trio of thieves as if it was dirt to him and in 20 seconds we know why. The sadness in his eyes strips away all the wealth & power to reveal that he's an old man and father, worried sick about the one thing that truly matters to him, his child.

There's a charm in the narration typical of the great 80's sci fi and fantasy movies. It's the throwaway lines. Escape from New York had this one where they said Snake was the one who "flew the Gulfire over Leningrad". Here, it's "King Osric, the Usurper". Who did he usurp? What kingdom came before? We'll never know and are left to imagine. It doesn't interfere with the plot so it's not detracting, and adds that much more depth to the world. Really don't see that good shit any more.

Conan is a force of will, not strength. Conan does not speak a lot because he is ill accostomed to flowery speech; Conan does not speak a lot because he does not have to. Yes, in 1981 Arnold Schwarzenegger had a thick accent that would have been difficult for an American audience to understand had he had a lot of lines. You can feel his performance. Every line is delivered to perfection. The outrage at this...Thulsa Doom. The disgust that such evil so boldly struts about the land. The trembing lip as he speaks of his daughter under the spell of this wretched man. Tears well up in his eyes, but they do not fall, for he is KING OSRIC. A lesser man would be lying on the floor sobbing. Two minutes and fifty-one seconds to create a character who will stay with you for the rest of your life.

He did get 50 more seconds in a deleted scene where he gets murderd by the snake cult shortly after sending the rescue party for his daughter. Giving more weight to the scene where the princess asking Conan to join her (or at least take her with him) after burning the temple.

Ever since I was a kid I always have to laugh at Valeria IMMEDIATELY falling to her knees and cuddling the hem of Osric's robes like saying "command me my King" as soon as he pours out the gems. ^^

+Wurzelknecht I figured that for her going for the gems that fell off the plate.
@Wurzelknecht
@Wurzelknecht 8 лет назад
Yes she's I'm sure she's also going for the gems but it also looks as if she's grasping Osric's robes. Maybe it's an attempt to hide her outburst of greed, but I just thought it was funny since it looked like as soon as he said anything about payment she was his to command ^^

This is a powerful example of how to tell a fuckin' story. No huge flash backs, no lengthy explanations. A king talking to subjects but he knew how to say it, how to perform, how to make so much clear. His disgust with politics, his disdain for the cowardice of others, his aging desire to have his child back and his displeasure at a cult growing in power over kingdoms and tribes. Fuck the awards, this old man could ACT.
