Great Tape Delay Tones Part 2: Fulltone TTE vs Pedals -That Pedal Show

Following our show on real tape delays, we’re getting in to some of our fave Echoplex / single-head-type sounds.
Life too short for long RU-vid videos? ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ info below.
COVID-19: This video was filmed long before the social distancing measures advised by various governments. We are of course following the proper guidelines at this time.
Be well y’all!
Dan and I recently fired up a Fulltone TTE, Roland RE-201 Space Echo, EchoFix EF-X2 and Hiwatt Custom Tape Echo to orientate ourselves around some lovely tape echo sounds.
In this follow up we listen to some single-head sounds in the style of the Fulltone, which is descended from the Maestro Echoplex lineage. Echoplexes varied greatly of course depending on model and era, so pinning down 'one sound' to chase is not the purpose of the exercise. Nevertheless we’ve chosen a bunch of modern pedals that do the 'tape thing'. And yes, we're only doing single-head sounds today: multi-heads can come later.
Once we’ve had a listen to some pedals, we then delve a little deeper into what a tape delay is actually doing to try to recreate it with other pedals.
Enjoy the episode!

Thanks Chris. I think that along with a decent proportion of the TPS audience, you’re here to help your own journey. Now I know why tape echo is so captivating: it's a microcosm of all the effects you could have on a board. Aside from the obvious timely replication of delay, it also has gain staging, compression, tone shaping, modulation. (Pitch or octave is maybe the only effect not present.) Thanks for spelling that circuit out on its own board!
@shaft9000
@shaft9000 6 месяцев назад
well, a clever EE can put most any modular synth circuit into a pedal (or vice-versa into the synth) with the right impedance and signal level, so there's still lots more: Sequencing (some Zvex, Moog MuRF do a little), more-extensive-than-fuzz Waveshaping , Envelope followers controlling more than just auto-wah, frequency shifting (NOT pitch-shifting, check out the "Bode Shifter" it's incredible), multimode filters/ fixed filter-bank/vocoder, ringmodulator and balanced (thru-zero + linear) FM, additive synthesis, Karpluss-Strong ("pitched" delay), bit-reduction, granular "glitch" sampling, more sophisticated PLL apps than Miku stomp, etc. Some play well with a guitar better than others, and some are better suited to mix processing rather than printing the effect while the part is recorded. I've yet to try half of it so far, myself. ^^ An Empress Zoia is probably the cheapest path to getting your brain wet with a fair number of these functions/effects,^^ to some degree or another :) btw, "modulation" is an automated sweep of a pot by means of a control oscillator or envelope;, not an effect per se

OMG - the deconstruction of a pedal into its component elements is an inspired format. Can you PLEASE have this a regular feature, in its own right. Make a chorus out of delay pedals. Make a Klone from voltage doublers and gain stages. Make a univibe by standing in a dark room with 4 torches. Much respect.

Consider this idea for a moment: Once a month or so, put together a crazy signal chain. Pull some stuff off the wall and see what happens. What do 5 choruses sound like together? I'm sure you can both dream up amazing pedal interactions and feedback loops with use of Wetter boxes. New sounds await you! MBV and Cocteau Twins gave us sonic palettes that didn't exist before, just by exploring new combinations. Who knows what could happen! It could be a once a month disaster, or it could be awe inspiring. Either way, I'm certain it would be good fun.

i highly reccomend getting a poweramp and cab for use with your helix, it'll make the world of difference to the "amp in room" sound, i can't even begin to describe. or, if you're somewhere you can be loud, plug straight into the effects return of your fender from your helix. just some things to think about, also using pedals as well as the helix is another world of fun

When you play the Fulltone at the intro I melt. Then you go through all the other pedals and they sound great. Then again you play the Fulltone and I melt. There’s something magic in there that even mega obsessive genius modern pedal makers can’t achieve.

Dans lego board layout helped me understand how delay works SO much! It even helped me understand why the APE only wants a single delay fed into it. Awesome stuff as usual.

Best show you two have done in years. Was about to pan on the "create an EP3" segment...so glad I didn't. Mad scientist Dan is best Dan.

LOVED LOVED LOVED this show and this series... AMAZING! And I absolutely loved Dan's Lego Delay. Absolutely killer! Dan, you are an absolute genius legend! Sidenote #1 - Wow you posted this early! I was in bed about to go to sleep at like 3:30 AM US PST and the show was already up! Took some self discipline to just go to sleep and wait until today to watch lol. Sidenote #2 - As good as Mick's 61 Strat sounds, Blue isn't too far behind now. Sounded great too! Of course, I think you sound great on pretty much everything you pick up, so there is that.

What a fun experiment with the delay parts recreation! Couldn't believe how riveted I was seeing the process play out.

Epic episode!!! Love it!!! Illustrates why so many of us have MANY different analog delays, TTE's, echorecs, digital delays, ... how many different permutations are available! Very cool!!!!

Great episode guys! I love delay and really liked all the pedals you used. Your constructed delay was awesome and helps me better appreciate why many of the delay pedals can be kind of pricey. Stay safe and keep up the good work!

Great show man! I feel like it was an antithesis for me on what you can show me with guitar pedals! Its exactly what I needed to know at the moment in regards to what delay actually is and how it has evolved! Great work! Love the episodes! Very informative. =)

If you are a delay nutcase, the concept of the lego delay is really attractive. Imagine the joy of swapping out the compressors, the pitch modulators ... glorious, absolutely glorious!

Massive props to Dan on this one. The Rube-goldberg digital analog tape delay machine was truly fascinating and was probably as close to a scientific lecture and demonstration on tape delay design as anyone is ever going to get or give. Very very impressed with this episode gents. Even just seeing the eq curve on the ge7 goes a long way to helping me dial in my timeline to better emulate a tape delay. Cheers from Brisbane.

That was killer. Part 2 was spectacular. That was the best explanation of a tape echo I have ever heard. I thought the "LEGO" tape echo you assembled was actually my favorite. All units sounded fantastic as well as both of your playing (as always.) Thank you!

Only Dan could create a 2.5k delay to sound like a 1k. Love it and that delay he created was incredible. Great episode. Hope you’re staying safe and well.

Absolutely fascinating episode, what Dan did creating his Frankenstein tape delay thing was incredible, kudos to him, playing by both of you was tremendous as well, the Fulltone TTE is an amazing machine but the others tape delay pedals were great as well, what isolation fun !!

Dans build-a-delay was amazing!! Really opened the doors in my brain to the possibilities with what I already have lying around. Explains why I like the modulated carbon copy with a digital delay but not the digital delay by itself... I can’t wait until part 3!

I love the idea that Dan recreates a delay effect with ... pedals. Only at That Pedal Show! Brilliant, genius, and it clarifies so we’ll how a delay effect works. Well done lads and take care of yourselves.
