Ritchie Valens took inspiration for the song from Mexican folk music, which Los Lobos repays with the acoustic breakdown during the fade out. Ritchie Valens other big hits were "Donna" and "Come On Let's Go". And for some Los Lobos, check out "Will the Wolf Survive?", "I Got Loaded", "One Time One Night" along with many others.

Many artists back then were influenced by Little Richard because he rocked hard. But the song itself comes from Mexican folk music. The Wikipedia article on the song goes into detail.

The original La Bamba is a regional Mexican folk song from the state of Veracruz that was rearranged as a rock song. That end fade out was a traditional "son(n)" Jarocho (meaning from Veracruz) sounds like.

Ritchie Valens was a talented young singer and an early rock ‘n’ roll star, but Los Lobos is simply one of the best bands in America. Start with “Will the Wolf Survive “ and then keep digging.

It was Lou Diamond Phillips who isn’t even Latino or of Mexican decent but really sang that and killed it! He starred in Young Guns Billy the Kid! Ands just like J Lo playing Selena who is Puert Rican and not Mexican either but killed it too!! Fun Facts and my people!!

Great song. Great reaction. This song is very important to rock history due to social issues at the time of it's release. As to different guitars, I and many others could overwhelm you with equipment facts and how it relates to guitar sound, tone, etc. But I try not to be a know-it-all. Bottom line... Listen to what you enjoy.

Great band from East L.A. Seen them a couple of times. There's a young band from Mexico called The Warning, very talented group. Their songs are all in English except for two. They performed two of their songs at the MTV VMAs a couple of months ago. I would suggest the song More, I feel it's a good first song to react to. They have a great sound, I have a feeling that you would really like them, peace.
