La Bamba was made popular in the late fifties by Richie Valens. Was played on the radio a lot. I’m sure you heard it when the movie came out about Richie Valens’ story

You need to listen to Playing For Change doing When The Levee Breaks with John Paul Jones (from Led Zep) included in it. ...Or them covering "The Weight" (The Band" classic track) with Ringo Star on the drums.

If you haven't already gone down the rabbit hole of Playing for Change, I hope you'll consider it. They have such a beautiful catalogue with a wide, diverse network of contributing artists. "Stand by Me" is particularly impressive.

Richie Valens died in "the plane crash" as people still refer to it in the 1950s that Don Mclean immortalized in American Pie with the lyric "the day the music died" also killed were Buddy Holly and "the Big Bopper" J.P. Richardson.

La Bamba means nothing special, it's just the name of the song. It's a Folksong( like 'Guantanamera' in Cuba). Originated in the Mexican State of Vera Cruz, a cultural symbol, dating back to the 1830s
