My favorite part of Howard Shore's score was the Lighting of the Beacons in The Return of the King, when Shore gives the main theme to the low brass (tubas, euphoniums), which can only mean one thing-- what you are about to see will be utterly EPIC!

I always liked heavy metal music! But a horn would be an early version of it! I'm glad most people don't have to really battle for life and death everyday anymore, but there are ones on our planet that still do tell that is going. We can never truly call ourselves. Civilized

Excellent video!! Minor nitpick, I hope I'm not being untoward: When speaning of one of the Valar, the singular form is Vala- the Vala Oromë, the Vala Tulkas, etc.; when it's them as a group, its Valar, and this rule applies to the Maiar and Eldar (Melian the Maia, the Elda Finwë).

"And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the city, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of war nor of wizardry, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn. And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns, in dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the north wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last.” chills. maybe it's so interconnected with the film but hearing a horn give the witch king pause, the light of the dawn, hundreds of riders advancing slowly over that hill, still gives me chills, whether i see it on the screen or read the words.

As for a non-canon horn: I really like the Horn of Harad, as heard in The Return of the King film. It's as resonant and grand in its way as any other horn of Men, but it also has a metallic quality that makes it somewhat ominous. It appears to be partially made of gold, and I think there may be some other metal in it as well. It would be cool if a Haradrim chieftain were to use a horn made of mumak ivory. That would make the Horn of Gondor look like a child's toy trumpet.

It is very interesting that in Middle-earth the sounds of these horns can be heard from miles away. I feel that in a universe created with music, there may be a connection between the transmission and range of the sound coming out of the horns and its perception by the target people.

You made no reference to what I think may be the best use of an unnamed horn in LotR. King Théoden at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields: [bold text is my emphasis] At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before: _Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!_ _Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!_ _spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered,_ _a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!_ _Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!_ *With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew on it such a blast that it burst asunder.* And straightaway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains. _Ride now, ride now! @doigt6590

He did win. This is a the timeline where the evil he introduced into the world wins and persists for ever. That's why it is called Arda Marred. And all the elvish and mannish realms that opposed him, he destroyed utterly. He won. He conquered everything. It's because he won that he was banished; he was just winning too much. And even then, all the evils he sowed were further continued by Sauron and will always pollute the world even after Sauron's time until Arda is remade.

@@doigt6590 Melkor entered Arda with the intent to rule all of it as it says in the Valaquenta: "For he coveted Arda and all that was in it, desiring the kingship of Manwe and dominion over the realms of his peers." At the time of the War of Wrath, all he truly controlled was Beleriand, which was only a part of the continent of Middle-Earth and had some level of power in other parts of the continent. It wasn't until after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, which marked the defeat of the Elves and their Edain allies, that the surviving Fëanorians, in their oath-filled madness, attacked their fellow Elves to try and retrieve the Silmaril that Beren and Lúthien had taken. Had Eärendil and Elwing not succeeded in their mission (with an assist from Ulmo), the war would have been over soon and Morgoth would have gotten the Silmaril back. Concerning your question regarding Morgoth's goals, see Morgoth's Ring, Myths Transformed, section VII.

@0 Your arguments are sound and backed by evidence. I thought he had had changed his mind about wanting all of Arda, but perhaps that was merely a pretense as he discovered it wouldn't be possible to rule Aman nor the Valar. If he could, he would in other words. Thanks!

Undoubtedly the greatest horn was the one Finwe gave to Miriel in that one night of passion when Feanor was conceived.

Disappointing video. Theoden took a horn from his banner-man and blew it so hard it exploded in his hand. It's one of the most memorable parts of the book, yet nobody ever mentions it. Let's pour one out for this nameless horn.
