Greatest Mountain Bike of All Time (Schwinn Homegrown Project)
I finally wanted to start the process of updating what I believe to be the best mountain bike of all time, my 2000 Schwinn Homegrown LTD. I have numerous reasons as to why I think this bike is so special but I would like to be able to prove that this bike is still a force to be reckoned with by taking it to the races. This means that this will be video 1 in a short series I am wanting to complete.
I appreciate all of you for supporting the channel!

I converted my homegrown to disc brakes and a single speed. Love this bike and at 19 pounds its like riding my old bmx around from childhood!

That’s a classic Schwinn, restore it as close to original as you can and preserve the legacy!

Don't have a Homegrown, but I have a Schwinn Mesa GSX...not in the Homegrown class, but 20 years later it still rides great.

I love this era of bikes... buddy of mine had a homegrown, we took a trip to colorado to do some riding and racing, dropped by the Schwinn offices for a quick tour and some stickers (always got to get that chi chi). Great to see them still loved. Keep it as a mtb 90s racer.

I had never ridden on dirt or gravel trails before except when I was a kid with my bike that was built for the street. In no way was I a mountain bike person because back when I was little, there was no such thing as mountain bikes. So fast forward to last year and I gave my road bike (Nishiki Olympic 12) to someone who still rides often and I wanted to dabble in mountain bike riding. Since I was new to this, I did not want to purchase an expensive bike that I found I would not be doing justice to, and nor did I want a new mountain bike that was basically not that good. Soooo a noted bike shop in my area had a 1999 Schwinn Homegrown. I loved it from the moment I saw it. The price was just right and I felt this would suit my needs perfectly. So what are my thoughts after riding for some time now on this bike. I still love it and will probably just keep this forever. Thanks for a great video and giving me the heartfelt feeling that I made a decent decision and wasn't buying a line from a guy in the bike shop just trying to sell an old bike.

Triple Sooper Dooper full whammy barn score today in BMFK Egypt/Oklahoma, here for work. A black 2000' size small, wow. It's got about 10 miles of dirt and some moderate bikepath use, they had slicks and a ladies comfort seat on it. No wear on the chain rings, cassette, derailleur or brake pads. Under the storage grime... total beauty. And a size small, rarer than a blue sun. I've had too many bikes to begin counting, just like all of you. worked on a mountain more of them, just like you. We don't have bikes...we have a bike "problem". I would guess that most salty old hard tail beasts would agree with you. These are quite damn possibly The Greatest of All Time. I'll save the parts, go 27.5 (2.4)rear x 27.5 (2.5-2.8) front, rigid Niner fork, 1x10 Advent X (of course) and the bikepacking kit a LOT, all that crap is sitting at home in CO ready for it. If ya ain't got one, get one. If ya can't get one... save up and look harder. Listen to the man, stop drooling and treat yourself, you deserve it. Go man, go

I bought a 1997 home grown xt hardtail from a friend in late 1997 .he had only rode the bike a few times and sold it to me. The bike sold new for $ 1399.00 Before taxes. I didn't ride it. I used it for art decor in my home. It still looks brand new just like from the factory the color is killer tomato red. I've owned it for 25 years. I was 34 years old back then and now I'm 59. Time flies. I'm thinking about selling it now it hasn't seen sunlight since I bought it back 1997. It has Always was house which makes rare since I don't believe there's a another hard tail xt like it.

I thought of converting mine to disc but I just got some Kool Stop brake pads and those things are great! I don’t see a reason for any more breaking power… or at least enough that would be worth the headache from converting.

Just got mine. I always wanted one of these and it's even red. Going to need a wee bit of work but is rideable as is. The bike is as light as people have said! And beautifully made. Tied with my 95 Parkpre in silver as one of my most favorite so far...

I love the idea of keeping it as original as possible, like you said its the GOAT and as the old saying goes, dont try to fix something thats not broke! Just my opinion but it's not my bike! Anything you decide to do will be cool!

I would keep it 26" wheels, and try to keep flat bars. That way you can use bar ends if you want. I would avoid the temptation to go 1x and keep a double or triple up front, that will allow more versatility. Picture: Thompson seatpost, control tech stem, Kore bars... it'd be gorgeous!

My bike is just a bit older. It's a Schwinn Crosscut. (91-92) I've used the bike for the past 30+ years only on roads and bike trails. It really never even occurred to me that the bike may be getting too old to find parts. Wow! That Home Grown looks like a beautiful bicycle. Will carbon fiber frames last that long?I kind of doubt it. (Come to think of it, I may soon be old enough that my parts will be worn out.)

Hello! I have a bass boat blue Homegrown from 95/96 and I need the HAYNES rear disk brakes. I still ride it daily. I had a bananna seat and bookworm tires (The Slalom Kang setup) on it until this summer when I moved next to some trails. It's an awesome ride. I was training for an upcoming cyclocross race and doing a comparison of roadbike vs Homegrown and the way the sun hits the sparkles buried in the paint on a good riding day just makes you grin. I need hose hayes brakes! where do I get them. I know they are hard to find. Love the content, will be watching more. I now want a Bass boat green frame.

Oh I am definitely going to scrub this thing clean while I'm building it! I need to do some more research on the geometry of the bike but I am leaning towards using 100mm since that's what it would have come with at the time.

I have one of these, but it has a dented top tube. Is it worth keeping?
@thelonerider9693
@thelonerider9693 3 года назад
It would probably hurt the resale value but if you want it as a bike to ride, not some kind of investment, and the dent is not deep or sharp, but shallow, it should be safe. I've ridden bikes with dented frames before. Even rode a cannondale with two dents, held up fine and I am not light. Small dings and dents were common on the top tube cause back then guys as ran their handlebars low; if your bars turned too far the brake lever would ding the toptube. My Homegrown actually has a very tiny dent on the top tube but it is so small one can barely see it. I don't care that it is there I am just happy to have the bike as it is one of the nicest "vintage" bikes I own.
