Metallica were road warriors in the 80's and this song captured their life on the road perfectly... James Hetfield recalled back in 1983 when the band launched their career, "...Radio wouldn't help us... MTV was a 'no-no'... No one would help us. So we played live... we played until we dropped..." Regardless of the quality of their later records... Metallica should always be respected for building a solid fanbase in the millions without any commercial airplay or media fanfare.

@@sumonjamal1653 I grew up in the 80's and Metallica was already huge by the time the "Black" album came out. How many bands had to build a fan base without radio or MTV? Just about every band that didn't have celebrity parents or connections. Do you look at the 70's and wonder how any of those bands made it without MTV? No, they were good and put in the work just like Metallica.

This album came out in 1991, a time when they have been together as a band for little over 10 years, released 4 previous albums that re-shaped the world of heavy metal, lost bassist wonder Cliff Burton on an accident while touring in Europe, and having 3 of the 4 members getting divorces during the recording of this album. This song speaks about all they had been through until that point, and how they will forever “roam” (travel the world playing their music) because that is how life is for Metallica, and that is how they have become who they are.

It tells a very dark story, in the lyrics and the intro is one of my personal favorite parts of any song, you can hear where each instrument "enters" the song and it's beautifully arranged. Metallica, One. Check it out.

Song was all about life on the road for Metallica. His body lies but still he roams.. aka being on a tour bus that while he lays a sleep his body is still roaming as the bus drove from city to city.

Oh the memories of high school and discovering Metallica in my late friend's car on the way to eat. He had Enter Sandman on the the radio and I asked who sang it. Him and 3 more of my closest friends looked at me like I was nuts. Yeah so the next day I went to Best Buy and bought the black album, Master of Puppets, Load, and S and M. From then on I was hooked. My next check I bought 3 more albums. What struck me the most about Metallica us the electric guitar and drums are in perfect sync with each other, like they have their own voice.

"Fade to Black" (lyric video) is a must listen. Such a heavy & deep subject.

I listened to hip hop when this album came out. But even I recognized their mastery. I could jam to this when I passed on so many others that were out at the time. Now I listen to everything. But back then I was a secret Metallica fan.

I absolutely love Metallica! This song is so iconic! One of my Black Album favorites! Guys! You gotta react to the Unforgiven I, II and III! Their 3 power ballads!! They are like poetry! You will love them!!

I love this song and uses to wait for the video everyday on mtv in the summer of 92. A lot of great music then.

It's fascinating to see metallica's journey. The loss of cliff, Jason and Dave's departure, the last 40 years have been a ride. I do suggest you watch their documentary Some Kind of Monster...it may shatter how you view them, but the movie made me appreciate them more.

Guys, Metallica are road warriors. They toured non stop for years. So no matter what city or country they go to, they make it their own. They embrace it.

Immediately after Cincinnati is the sign for Assembly Hall in Champaign, Illinois.....Home of the Flyin' Illini and about 30 minutes from me! It's called State Farm Center now but it'll always be Assembly Hall to me! If yall haven't reacted to Metallicas Fade to Black, To love is to die, the unforgiven or nothing else matters you should! Deeper, "slower" Metallica. Also, check out a couple of Motley Crues deeper ones....On with the show and you're all I need! God bless!

I love Lars' drums on this especially toward the end with the extended fills and the crashes on the 2 instead of at the beginning of the phrase. Brilliant stuff!
