I just found a Gneco mini humbucker gold top in Tokyo...I can't believe how good it plays and sounds...of course I bought it! Thanks for the history lesson!

Personally I think that the most bang for the buck-Greco is an early Rock Spirits. Other than suggested in this video they were around from as early as 1985 and had regular set necks at the time. It's practically an EG-1200 except for the nitro finish and the fret binding - two features that I personally can live without. The price on these is still reasonable as they are confused with the "lesser-quality' bolt-ons from the nineties.

If you're trying to date a mid-70s Greco, the 1974 Greco catalog has the Gneco lettering, while the 1974-75 vol. 2 catalog has Greco on the cover. I didn't know about the yen/model# connection, thank you! Few months ago I bought what was sold to me as an EG-360, but looking at the tuners and truss rod cover, it's actually EG-420, yay!

Very interesting especially when you talk about the highend Super Real models like 2500 and 2600. I was a member in the Tokai registry with a lot of guys from all over the world collecting all the highend Tokais and Grecos and Burnys and so on. In more than one decade no one there was able to buy or show a model higher than the regular 1800 showed in the catalogue. The myth about 2500s and higher was always around but even when some of those guys came from Japan or had excellent sources to get the most collectable guitars from there not one found the holy grail even if some spent more than 20 years with the search.

I have a egf 850 from 81 and the quality is really good. I changed the pickups. The egf 850 did not have the dry-z pickups that some of the models had. I switched to lundgren pickups and it sounds really good. Its much better than my more expensive Gibson les Paul. I think the value of these guitars migth increase over time as well. The soldering is good as well :) mine is made of 3 pices as you mentioned some of them migth be :) Nice video!!

@TheYetti1
@TheYetti1 4 года назад
I do! What specific would you like? Or ill just Blab out what i know and maybe cover it?! 1975 Narumo models would be the first signatures essentially. He worked with Greco on Specs of what we consider today pretty typical. However was the first of its kind from Greco back then. Followed Typically a Set neck which was unusual pre 1975 for Greco. Ebony Fret Board, Lil More Figuring to the tops. I think some came with uncovered pickups maybe. However most notably and identifiably by a belly carve on the back. They typically were made in as EG600s i believe but some where in the EG800s. Not 100% but i think they were around only in 75 and 76. So if you find one pick it up because it should be the earliest higher quality guitar from Greco.

Great History lesson Rob. I bought a Greco Fender copy for my son a few years ago when he started to play. I had it imported from Japan and I'm told it plays like a dream, I guess I was attracted to it because of the name Greco (same as my surname). I was wondering what you could tell me about it. All I can get from it is a serial number on the head 6796120 and the writing on the front..."GO II Crafted by Greco, Brazen Picker Professional" Its in superb condition and I'm thinking of mounting it with a brief history about the guitar. Any info would be helpful and much appreciated.

As mentioned in the video..your clearest identification above a Eg500 will have Binding over the Frets. In some cases the guitar will still have its EG model sticker on teh back of the headstock.

Hi Rob, great video, very informative. I’m deciding between a 90 eg59 and an 80 egf850. The 850 is more but I’m wondering if there is that much difference in build and sound? Both have nice flames tops.
@TheYetti1
@TheYetti1 6 лет назад
Chris B yeah the EGF850 is gonna be much more expensive. I would almost say probably more desirable as well. Depending on the type of 59 tho cuz they will do the same thing as for models EG59-50 = similar to EG500. EG59-100 = top of the line practically. You'd probably need to have one in the higher numbers to be comprable to the EGF. But I would choose the EGF it will be in before, I think, they got CNC machines so it's still pretty hand made.
@TheWarfen
@TheWarfen 6 лет назад
Thanks Rob. It's a EG-59-70 or the EGF 850. Sounds like they may be close in terms of spec but I understand the 850 will be worth more. Are both or either nitro finished? Or are they poly?
@TheYetti1

Yeah super close. Only difference maybe pickups if original. Not 100% but I think poly for both.

@TheYetti1
@TheYetti1 4 года назад
Thanks for your comment! Dated from 1988 would be just after the times of the Super Reals so you would most likely be looking at the Les Pauls that were probably "customs" with binding on the front and back. Depending on the condition they are great guitars. ALOT from that era so there will be alot of very bad condition ones.

@TheYetti1
@TheYetti1 5 лет назад
Best bang for Grecos are going to be that 700 to 800 range. Even 900 range is awesome but typically pricier. But for sure 700s can come in under priced pretty often and had at good deals. No experience with Epiphone guitars fortunately. Im into the vibe of these 70s and 80s made ones IMO.

@TheYetti1
@TheYetti1 4 года назад
68/60s Are pretty I would rate most things better before the 90s so your just a model under the 500s which would bring mid $500 prices. Depending on the finishing (burst being better) of your 60, could get you above $600ish USD. Should be a pretty sexy Guitar...i will at some point collect 58/xx and learn more from them tho.

@@TheYetti1 thanks for the answer! Does the split diamond in my egc makes it rare or expensier? It's a black Custom, not sunburst unfortunately. I've seen people that sells the same model Mint collection series egc 68/60 up to 800 usd, I thought I could sell it in that price 😔
@TheYetti1
@TheYetti1 4 года назад
@@NecrosisF Nah,the split diamond deal just denotes the time period. So they all will have those from the 90s years. The Value comes from the Model Number > What qualities they put into the building process. Possible correction on myself...if you have that diamond then you wont typically have it classified in the 68-60s those will just have the greco logo in a yellowish tint. If thats the case you might just have simply the EGC 500/600 (Mint Collection Years because of the diamond) I would look to sell in the $500-600 range still depending on shape...

Mornin Rob. Today is 12/13/18. I was watching Lucas Fowler playing his Greco LP copy. I have a (as far as I know)an '88 model Greco. Head stock has only Greco and a diamond in the logo. Not like yours but looks like two arrows,one pointing up and one down at the N at the top of tuning head and a larger diamond at the bottom of the logo.A smaller arrow below the top arrow and two smaller characters ,one on each side at the top of the lower pointer or arror. 5 pieces in all . Maybe two inches or so long. Seral #A880057. I think weight is 11.6 lbs. has a darker sound than my 10.5 lb Gibson les paul standard. I have Bkp pups in it.Paf types but in BKP . A little different than a SD or Gibson paf. Thanks,J.Any info ? Thank you. J.

Yeah 1988 with the diamond would be your Mint Collection Series. They are very similar to pretty much Gibson LP Customs with all the binding if you have it on the front and back. Solid guitars. Keep an eye out for the next Video addressing sellers. On Tokais and Burnys its arguable as they used similar building practices. In my opinion i find Burnys a bit lower in price and quality, By quality they had alot of models just solid colors not a ton of bursts etc. Tokais are a bit more well known not sure years of production but i think their name pulls more $$$. They seem to go after the look of the more expensive Gibson models.

Tokai bought an ol Gibson Les Paul from 1958 in the middle of the 70´s, that would be the blueprint for almost all MIJ les paul copies of late 70 and forward. Greco correct dates: Greco Super Real - Production started mid 1979 to mid 1982. Greco Mint Collection - mid 1982 and forward to beginnig of 90´s. Greco never had theire own factory, but where mostly produced by FujjiGen and sometimes Tokai.

The first run of the MC series, about 1000 guitars, was from 82 through 84 and into 85..regardless of model number they all had long neck tenon, solid mahogany bodies (no chambering) hand selected for its musicality, fret binding on ebony or rosewood fret boards. They were made by a team of veteran luthiers (MC series was their brainchild) who, during 1985, handed production of the MC series over to a different team in a different factory geared for mass production methods. This first run however of about 1000 Fugijen les pauls from the MC series are considered by many to be the peak of Greco's Les Paul manufacturing.
