The bad guy with the grenade on stairs happened. Caused controversy as well. The media were asking, "Why does he have so many bullets in him? It must have been an execution!" No, it just that 3 or 4 operators saw the threat independently of each other, and they all took action at the same time. John McAleese described it best, "when theres a situation like that, it's no good looking at each other, wondering who's gonna deal with it. So we all shot him."

Famously The PM said she didn’t want this to be an on going problem. Which was taken to mean no terrorist survivors, only the fact that a tv helicopter saw them walk the suspect back towards the building meant he got to live.

Yep yep this. Also to clarify the extraction, 1 hostage was killed trying to exfil with hostages and 1 xray did in fact make it outside to the lawn. He was identified and led away by one of the SAS team. That member returned alone a few seconds later. This was investigated. However as Thatcher had given the order of ' no terrorist is to leave ' iirc no action was taken. I saw this unfold as a kid, it started my fascination with the SAS.

Two hostages were killed. One prior to, one during the assault. One terrorist survived and was only recently released from prison. He (like the guy killed on the stairs) chickened out and pretended to be a hostage. When he was zip-tied and put on his belly (like all the hostages until positive IDs were made) he was identified as a hostile by the hostages. Rumour has it that an SAS operator picked him up and started to lead him back indoors, with the intention of executing him, before a fellow operator pointed out there were cameras on them and he was reluctantly returned to the lawn and arrested. PM Margaret Thatcher and her husband Dennis later visited the SAS team at Hyde Park Barracks to congratulate them for a job well done. Operators "Snapper" and John McAleese remember Dennis joking "Well done chaps, but you let one of the bastards live."

Tyler is right about the guy on the stairs, he was pushed towards one of the other ops who made the recognition and fired, i think i heard that another op shot him as well at bottom of stairs before checking grenade. As for the other terrorist that Buck mentioned.....everybody that was evacuated was ziptied on lawn outside until they could be ID'd. Some of the hostages were yelling that one of the terrorists was there, so they grabbed him. There was unofficial rumour that the boys were going to take him back into the building to finish the job but the news cameras were watching. That of course is completely denied. That guy from the lawn was the only survivor of the terrorist group and went to prison

It helps that there was a former SAS sergeant among the police presence who phoned the SAS officers mess before the government actually called them in, and said something along the lines of "your probably going to get called in for this, be ready" so the 2 teams that were taking part were already waiting with their gear to be called in when the government actually called them in

Good book - "Soldier ""I" SAS" - dude was on the staircase, hit the grenade guy in the head to knock him down the stairs - two other guys shot him. One terrorist did get out with the hostages, was identified and arrested once everyone was out and zapstrapped on the lawn. When the Coroner's Inquest happened afterwards, he was one of the operators that had to testify, including having to explain why grenade guy had so many bullet holes in him... Weird story - my mother was doing her history degree when I was high school, and one of the courses was a military history course - they had the negotiator as a guest lecturer and he presented the audio tapes of him keeping Oan busy right up to when the window and distraction charges went off and the shooting started. There were students invited from the military college in town that got to hear/see a more classified version as well - ongoing audio and video from outside and inside the embassy after the fire was put out and the CSI folks started going through.
@JustMeHere359
@JustMeHere359 14 дней назад
It was Rusty who plugged the terrorist on the stairs. When 2 unnamed operators realised one of the terrorists was on the lawn they were about to drag him back inside the embassy and send him to meet his maker. But stopped when one of their mates grabbed them and pointed out there was a photographer with a long lens hanging out of a window.

I was 10 when this happened, and like millions of others I watched it live on television. In the UK at the time we had just three television channels. BBC1 was showing the final of the World Snooker Championships. BBC2 was showing a John Wayne western (that's what we were watching). ITV were showing an episode of the long running soap opera Coronation Street, and they refused to switch to the embassy footage until Coronation Street had finished. Kate Adie (played by Abboe Cornish in the film) was the BBC commentator during the attack and would later get shot in the elbow during the Tiemnaman (spelling) Square massacre in 1989. The whole country was walking on air the next day.

@@MrCashewkitty That's also right but in his case he might be using MK18 or other such short carbines not standard M4 type carbine, so their is that. I can't pin point the interview but it was said that during the Iraq insurgency the door kicking operations went through the roof so that every type of SF unit was doing it. During these times Rangers transformed into a tier 1 unit being a middle ground between conventional and SF units. While at the same time Green Berets were also operating at high tempo in Afghanistan. So at such times one also feels to get the mission over as quickly as possible as there are more targets to hit and there is not enough manpower or time. So such decisions can be taken as they have a higher skill ceiling. Not everyone can do this he is one of those exceptions.

@@MrCashewkitty He is an exception as he mentioned that his unit used suppressor which reduces the weight of fire affect while using in semi-auto when you are less in numbers while facing non suppressed ak's. He said that he can control full auto so why not use it to expedite that procedure as now room clearing has been slowed down to avoid casualties vs how it was in early days, so one has to save time somewhere. Beside that he also mentions that he will switch to semi auto if there were enemies present along with hostages. This is like MAC-V and SASR units which used full auto short barrel battle rifles like M15 and FAL to produce an image of being a larger unit when in heavy contact with VC and NVA.

The trooper standing behind rusty saw the grenade and butted his gun to the back of the terrorist’s head while warning rusty who then opened up on the guy. It took seconds but the producers spun it out longer. Rusty firmin spoke about the scene in a podcast .I believe the trooper who hit the terrorist was John macaleese ( Mac in the film ) .

I believe that what he meant fight down is referring to assaulting any type of building or tall structure, you always want to attack from top to bottom clearing. Or both. Having top position is always ideal

One of the Troopers that shot the terrorist on the stairway was Robin Horsefall. His book Fighting Scared is worth a read. In the 1990's there was a documentary on British television that interviewed some of the hostages but also got some of the SAS Troopers, including Horsefall and John Macaleese You can watch it here and hear what happened from the people who were actually there ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4azM1DKqFI8.html&rco=1 Highly recommended

I know you guys didn't like Spec Ops: Lioness but when you guys were talking about plans getting input from politicians at the last moment because of optics it happened in that show too. People getting cold feet when it's time to get kinetic would drive me crazy.

I completely agree with Tyler regarding full vs semi-auto!! I'm actually surprised that that is the contrary opinion 😅

1 did get out. The Police got to him before he got dragged back into the Embassy and dealt with. He got released from Prison a few years back after his long sentence. Very luck the Police got to him.

The MP5 jam actually did happen, and the Operator had to switch to his sidearm. What they don't show, for some reason, is that he neutralized the terrorist with his first shot and didn't miss like in the movie.
