I can’t recall the source for this but I remember reading that part of why the helicopter went down, was that they’d practiced raiding the compound using a 1:1 scale model and it featured a chainlink fence. Whereas the real thing had those mud walls, and this then created different upwinds that they hadn’t anticipated.

Hang in there brother and so sorry for your tragic loss,..I had to reply with something that’s helped me a ton,..I went through the worst divorce you can have sprung on you where my ex worked the system illegaly and unlawfully serving me divorce papers with the incorrect court dates on them ,..then knowing I was going to be a no show with wrong dates she changed her decree , giving herself 100% of EVERYTHING,..worst of all 100% FULL custody of our 3 daughters , my youngest , a baby and all 3 being the lights of my life,..she gave me a couple hours a week in parenting time , deleted phone calls and FaceTimes, gave herself alimony and full child support for all 3 of my girls , gave me ALL the debt and her self ALL the profit made on selling the home I paid for, kept all the furniture and even the conceal carry pistole my daughters got me for my birthday. She told the judge I was a no show, a dead beat dad and didn’t care about my children or anything along with a ton of horrible lies and filed for a default judgement and got it awarded. She got everything she wanted and when I went to the courts with the papers showing the wrong dates from her , I was told it was signed by a judge so I’d need to take her to court to try and undo what she’s done. She gets 92% of my income so I can’t afford an attorney (the entire idea) and can’t pay my bills with what I’m left with. She called the owners of the firm I worked for and destroyed my income and reputation with lies , then on the day the judgement was signed she text me after I asked to FaceTime my baby girl and said she wasn’t allowing phone calls or FaceTimes anymore since it’s not in her decree, then told me she was moving in with “her boyfriend” I knew nothing about and moving my daughters into this strange man’s basement, sold the house and kept the $160k , has me paying for her implants, she’s since started horrific rumors about me, but worst of all she’s decided to not let me see my daughters anymore and telling them I abandoned them , telling them they can’t call me dad anymore , call me by my first name when referring to me, call her boyfriend “dad” and that I don’t love them enough to want to see them. Becasue of Covid the courts got 8 months behind so it’s been almost TWO YEARS of not seeing my kids or taking to them waiting for my day in court. During that time my mom collapsed one day and turned out she had a brain tumor, stage 4 brain cancer , ended up quickly in a coma and passed away just months later, my ex then refused to let my daughters come to my moms (their grandmas) funeral on one of the worst days of my life. My dad collapsed after the funeral with Covid. Her lies and rumors ultimately took my job and now she’s reporting unpaid alimony and child suport becasue I’m starting mt own firm but don’t have the income yet. I lost my health insurance with the job so had to cold turkey off all my medications and have been horribly sick for months since becasue of that, lat week I broke 2 teeth and have no dental insurance or money to fix them. All in all it’s been the worst 4 years of my life but not seeing my babies is killing me!!! I felt SO lost and defeated on every possibly level! Loosing my mom and daughters same time essentially has all but killed me and left me terribly lonely and sad, even when I hang out with girls, nothing replaces my daughters. I was at the end of my rope and giving up on everything when a Sunday morning about a month ago I saw a Sean Ryan podcast alert . He was interviewing legend DJ Shipley; SEAL Team 6 gone DELTA Force Green Team , to CIA sledgehammer , now owner of GBRS private war fighters and Spec Ops training and a RU-vid channel. I’ve looked up to him forever , a Legend! Probably THE deadliest most trained tier 1 Operators on Earth, countless catastrophic combat injuries , 17 years in but also He is THE most humble , quiet down to earth man but his 2 hour podcast he talks of his career and injuries /accidents but goes all in on his f&ck ups, mistakes, infidelity, cheating, drug use , lying and deception, his destroyed relationships with his parents, and struggle with suicide and attempts. Baddest operator on earth starts crying thru this and showed me it’s ok to cry, to hurt and said EVERYONE experiences loss, pain, everyone screws up, makes mistakes, but your frame of mind is key, everything can be worked on, hearing can occure , change can be made a thought at a time,..jsut DONT give up! He said he went to the beach to commit suicide after his wife found his secret IG account he used to cheat adn told him to get his stuff and leave her and his children. Jsut before pulling the trigger in the Bed of his truck, she showed up by miracle and told him their marriage maybe over but she Loves him still and that his children need him and don’t deserve to go thru life wondering why they weren’t enough for him to stay on this earth and it changed his life! He fought like hell to get his life back, own his crap and become better and happier and all he could be for his kids and to help others struggling and is a changed man today. I thought of my daughters too and he was talking to me there! I could never imagine them wondering why they weren’t enough to stay and made a decision right then to fight like hell however I can , each day, baby steps to changing my circumstances and righting what my ex has done while owning my mistakes . Since thst Sunday, things are slowly changing, hope has come, answers , heaven sent things thst are starting to turn the wheel. I feel like Karma and what’s right will prevail , people and organizations have come out of the wood work randomly thst will help this change. That 2 hour podcast hd an effect on me and seeing DJ go though hell I can’t imagine and come out ontop fighting is an inspiration thst I can come out on top, I’m not damned to my circumstances! I’d hebcan get their thst hell, I can get thru mine , I’ll continue to fight for my babies as long as it takes and leave my ex and her damning , destructive , dark $hit in the past and out of my life! Be greatful that I’m not married to someone that could betray a spouse SO horribly , someone that can emotionally hurt my children for her own selfish wants! I’m greatful to not be married to that stranger I thought I knew and when I get my babies back, it’ll be a happiness I’ve never experienced before. Sorry for the super long comment but I’ve felt what you feel, I’ve lost 2 of my closest friends to suicide , I’ve experienced dark disparity , hurt and pain thst doesn’t seem like it will ever get easier but you start to feel better, you learn to live with the missing and can get strong feelings from it! I jsut wanted to suggest you watch the Sean ryan DJ Shipley 2 hour podcast episode on RU-vid , he also has some great interviews with green beret mike Glovers channel. Black rifle coffee has some amazing podcasts too. Hope DJs interview can help us like it helped me. Hang in there brother!

The movie never explicitly tells you if she's competent or incompetent. It shows you what happened and always you to decide. There isn't enough time in the movie to give some nuanced backstory. Instead , most of the movie scenes were shot in my city "Chandigarh" 🇮🇳India And next to my school the local flea market was given makeover of a Pakistani marketplace complete with Urdu shop signs 😅 and people dressed in Pathan suits strolling by . I saw this discussion come up with Top Gun when being reviewed by pilots about why they say unnecessary things. I would think it's because the average viewer doesn't know what tapping the top of your head means so they say it out loud as well so we can be more engaged with the scene. Same with the cockpit scenes, since the audience can't be in the pilot's head to know what their next move is, they say it out loud as way to guide the audience along. I think we forget these are movies and the story has to be told in a way the viewer can follow along and not get lost.

You're 100% correct. It's funny because a lot of kids watching anime don't understand why there's so much dialogue during fight scenes. Thoughts are spoken out loud for context for the [ignorant] viewer's sake. Also a lot of the story can be explained for foreshadowing and future reference. But much involves lingo and tactics that the average person isn't aware of, or just plainly don't think about. The more you understand about the story, the more you enjoy the experience.
@timgimmy609
@timgimmy609 Год назад
@@wadewilson8011okay but in most anime it’s just a way to fill up time and stretch out a fight scene without actually having to do more animation. The point of film is to use visual language to help tell your story, if it’s constantly stopping for characters to literally tell the plot out loud I might as well be reading a book

@GiRayne I never took any message that torture is acceptable or good from the movie. There again, I know refugees from Afghanistan who spoke of local imams who deradicalised potential suicide bombers in that country. The message I took from Zero Dark 30 is that effective intelligence requires long term relationships of trust, acting in good faith and deep connections with local people, knowing their grievances. Not something the USA is particularly well known for.

Rob O’Neill stated in his book the reason for the Helicopter crash. When they built the replica of the compound and rehearsed, the fence was chain link I believe where as the actual fence of the compound was solid. As a result, when the helicopter went to hover in ground effect, sufficient air couldn’t circulate for enough lift and it went down. Also, he said one of the 160th guys thought he could still fly it out 😂 just makes a little more sense of the situation.

For the Helicopter crash, when they practiced using it they were landing in a practice compound with normal chainlinked fence allowing air to disperse outwards away from the LZ. During the raid, Bin Laden's compound had the normal Mud/Clay walls with no breathing room for air t escape except upwards. The upward draft interferred with the way the helicopter rotors worked and caused like a "dead zone" where they lost lift causing the crash. Atleast thats the story ive seen/read in respknse to why it crashed

I feel like there is an epidemic in my department of people “acting like they’re an expert after doing a skill once, never taking responsibility for mistakes and in fact are scared to screw up and would never admit if they did, and acting weird if you try and convey a training evolution to re-create a scary situation I was in (with another officer) where we were moving through a fully charged high heat commercial structure to find the fire and I got disorientated in a split second. (Smoke so thick could not see my flir screen in front if my eyes). I got lost (which experienced guys have been lost in fires before and know how scary and easy it can happen). Well I want to show my guys like hey this could happen to you and we need to get a structure and re-create that (as best we can) in a training scenario. Its like me acting like I was a little nervous is weird to them. How do I show them its okay to admit fear and that you should respect this job can kill you in a second so we need to constantly be getting better and train and be open to saying “what we did good and what we did not so good and how were going to train to get better”?

The reason the crash happened, according to the story tellers, is bc when they trained they simulated the walls with chain link fence, the solid wall created updrafts and choked the engines and stalled them, if they trained with solid walls they would’ve known about it ahead of time, pretty sure Rob O’Neil talks about it in his speeches about the raid

“Thank God HE was in there because if he wasn’t we’d have to explain why we crashed a top secret helicopter in a compound in Pakistan…” Lemme try: “Early today an experimental military aircraft had unforeseen technical issues and inadvertently wandered into Pakistani airspace while experiencing catastrophic engine failure. Up until this moment, this was a routine training flight. I repeat: this was a routine training flight. Luckily the skilled pilots were able to land the aircraft with no injuries on board. We would like to thank the Pakistani government in their assistance and are grateful for their ongoing relationship with the United States.” There, how’s that?

Yeah, then access to our super secret helicopter is being sold to the highest bidders. And then China would make the “Walmart version” and Russia will build a toy that looks like it works.

Just rewatched Zero Dark Thirty in honor of today in honor of 9-11. First time watching it in a long time, as a recent graduate of 12 Bravo Combat Engineer school, I recognized some of the breaching charges the breachers utilized during the compound scene. Kind of made it a unique re-watch experience for me personally. Either way thanks for the book recommendations Buck, I'll check those out. Hooah

if you guys havent yet please check out a movie called The Objective. It was a low budget movie that came out around 2008 and its about a CIA operative who was assigned to a special forces squad in Afghanistan in the timeframe before the full invasion of Afghanistan. They were tasked with finding an elusive Afghan general but run into some weird crazy shit that's like deeply rooted in history in that region (not trying to spoil). picture Apocalypse Now but in the barren mountains of Afghanistan with a slight sci-fi touch to it. also Ken Taylor appears in the movie lol

Regarding the crash. From what I've read, the mock up that they trained on for the compound had chain link fence to represent the walls of the compound. Because air, as you can imagine, moves through chain-link better than it does through a solid wall training landings inside the mock compound went down without a hitch. However, during the actual raid itself air from the rotor wash got trapped inside the compound and created an event in which the helicopter immediately lost its positive lift and they crash landed. To my understanding, the pilot of the other bird who saw the crash reacted quickly and off set his original landing ( atop the roof) to landing outside the compound.

The thing with the helo crash had everything to do with the fact that when they trained for the assault, they used a mockup of the compound with a chainlink fence, not the solid concrete walls that the actual compound had, so the denseness and temperature differences of the air beneath the rotors in Abbottabad vs the training site in Nevada had vastly different effects on the way the helo responded to lift, thus causing the crash. And I believe the SOAR pilots were cleared of any pilot error with the crash investigation that occurred after the raid. I think I read this somewhere ;-)
