Afghan commandos led by American Special Forces soldiers were inserted into the Shok Valley via helicopter. Ten soldiers belonging to U.S Army special forces were awarded the Silver Star for bravery, the greatest number of such awards for a single battle since the Vietnam War.
Airman Zach Rhyner, ODA 3336's attached Air Force Combat Controller, was awarded the Air Force Cross. Special Forces medic Ron Shurer earned the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle.

I’m a retired grunt, two tours of Vietnam, 2/502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. We had contact almost every time we went out. I’m so grateful for these kids! War is a sausage grinder ! No way I can explain it. My oldest son is a full bird Colonel , stationed at the Pentagon. His job is a Judge with JAG. Every time I see him in uniform I remember when I used to Trimble at the sight of an 0-6 ! I used to change this guy’s diaper! Without fail I remind him to extend the maximum amount of respect 🫡 to any and all Combat Veterans! He truly hates being stuck in D.C. knows he will never be selected to BG (07) and frankly is revulsed by the way Afghanistan was abandoned after One trillion dollars and the Blood 🩸 and souls of THE VERY FINEST WARRIORS THAT WE HAVE EVER PRODUCED. My father fought in Korea , that was the last ✅ in the Win column! Vietnam, Afghanistan Iraq the middle east, every time Sam puts his fingers down someone’s pants…. He gets in a scrap that he eventually walks away from! Over the dead bodies of the men that show up, ready to kill ready to die! I see a pattern. We fought under IMPOSSIBLE CONDITIONS! 110°, 100% humidity most of the time! Bamboo so thick you eventually use claymore’s to blow a path! Agent orange helped but fucked up your liver! We ALL had diarrhea and that takes all of your strength and endurance. Every day we had to take a malaria pill because the misquotes were gangster ! And malaria was tearing up the ranks. (So was the clap, $3 for a quk puc) My watch is coming to a close. I’m 74! In Vietnam one time we were back at camp Eagle and we were given a scrap of paper 📝 “I want you to put down how long you want to live! If you had full control” Said Cpt. Jackson our company commander, and a former high school teacher…. The average was 43 years! I was 18 when I was drafted, 19 when I graduated Infantry School and Airborne Training at Ft. Benning, Also 19 when I arrived in country and underwent SERTS “ screaming eagle replacement training school” A 12 day out of the wire indoctrination to fighting in Vietnam. We did we patrols every day, every afternoon and evening we were back in the compound learning how to rappel from a helicopter and how to use a PRC 25 radio. Also how the enemy works because they had 2 Viet Cong guerrillas that saw the “ surrender to the Americans! Present this flyer to them and hold your other hand up high! You will receive $200 USA Cash today! And every month! That was equivalent to $6400. In “Yang” money! Totally unbelievable! They had to move their families inside the compound to protect their lives. They showed us shit that made us TRIMBLE ! How simple it was to: penetrate the perimeter unnoticed. Enter any building undetected, and have an AK-47 in your right hand, and a bunch of grenades in a satchel in your left hand. Also, they have a cotton square they would soak in Ether and slap it over the mouth and nose of the sleeping soldier, and slit his throat with a straight razor! They could do all kinds of damage without being detected, and also exit the compound, the same way they came in! They were as slippery as worms in snot!

Not all of these guys were SF guys. I was actually in country when this happened. My unit was about 27 miles away from this. We didn’t hear about it for multiple days. But it doesn’t matter how good you’re in combat. When the enemy has the high ground it’s impossible to win. This type of operation should’ve been a night hit and it definitely should’ve been the type you land 7-10 miles out and walk in.. smaller teams…. When you have a massive team it makes easier targets. I spent 7.5 years in the 75th and I got out because it was a pointless war nothing we were doing was keeping Americans safe. What we did do as make American politicians rich

I think the Men and Women in our Military who fought in the Afghanistan and Iraq theaters are every bit as great as our “Greatest Generation” . They and their families gave just as much, suffered and endured just as much and should be honored just as much. “All gave some and some gave all” is as true today as when it was first heard. My stepdad was a PJ in the Vietnam war who spent three years in country. I think all of our veterans deserve the utmost respect and support from our nation. We should be doing so much more for them. Respect and Prayers.🫡

To be honest having control of the high ground. Being in your own backyard so to speak. That is definitely key to winning against an actacking force. Im glad they US had danger close air support. To aid them in taking out the enemy insurgents. Thankfully the skill of the fighter pilots waa so good. They were able to evacuate their wounded. Thoughts and prayers to those who wwnt through this battle. Aa well as their family's especially their Medic who was awarded the MOH. 💪🏻✨🙏🏻

I sincerely Thank GOD ALMIGHTY above for our service members and the will they have to fight for our freedom here in the USA. Not only are they fighting for our freedom but my Dad will was a combat veteran from Vietnam once told me, "We fight them over the so we don't have to fight them here on our on soil and land around our families." Between my Dad and my brother being combat veterans and my son currently serving not to mention words s free uncles and cousins that have served this stuff his great and dear to my heart. As I said I Thank GOD ALMIGHTY for HIS sufficient Grace looking after my Dad my Big Brother and My Oldest Son during these times of war. May GOD Bless and be with each of you current service men and women plus our veterans. May HE help with the PTSD, the nightmares and cold sweats that I've seen these gentlemen have. It's not an easy or fun existence in times of war. It takes a special human being to sign on that dotted line saying they will let their life down and give up to and including their life for this country. Again may GOD ALMIGHTY HIMSELF be with each and every single one of you guys plus keep you safe with HIS hedge of protection wrapped tightly around you all. GOD Bless each service member, first responders, families of service members plus our first responder families as well. Last but not least GOD Bless the USA, she needs it more now than ever and so do I. This military Momma needs Pray severely and if you don't mind and a Prayer up for me and mine. Thank you all so much and have a great day.

Very interesting story, and very brave men indeed. My question is, if they know you're there already because of the Helos... why not suppress the top of the mountain with munitions? The tactics used by SpecOps sometimes bewilder me. If you're not there to obliterate the enemy and win entirely then you should not be there. This sums up Iraq and Afghanistan in which we are not Nationbuilders.

The huge difference between the fighting in Afghanistan VS Iraq was skill/caliber of the fighters and the terrain/environment... if you listen to literally any interview with special forces or army guys who have fought the Taliban / mujahideen they will all tell you that it was like fighting a professional Army and especially guys who fought in a wreck to will tell you they were way better Fighters than the guys they fought in Iraq..... not only that Afghanistan is pretty much all mountains and valleys so, if you don't know the land and the enemy gets the high ground your done...

The enemy combatants would not have been exposed and maneuvering if they didn't think they had cornered the advance teams on the ground. As much as teams got shot, this was possibly the best outcome. This paired with the fact, many 'combatants' would probably not be clearly identified, armed with weapons, if they only had some helicopter overhead; they'd likely hide instead. The fact that the enemy gets drawn out is the reason why they suffered so many casualties once the air support started. They would not bother to arm themselves and position in various mountains and buildings, if there was only aircraft overhead. In such case instead of 250 or so dead they'd only suffer like 10. The others would pose like villagers, hide, or not be exposed in the first place. So either way, it was required and they sort of achieved a greater outcome because events unfolded that way. I'd say less spoken/hyped battles like this would be more important or impactful than the hyped ones.

It's the concept of a scalpel versus a chainsaw. SOF units are very small, specialized, and can get eyes on a target a lot easier than you can from 30k feet. When you're hunting HVT's, you need boots on the ground. *De Oppresso Liber*
