I guess Goblin is reminiscent of Joker in that he doesn't hate his own Peter Parker so much as he hates the very idea of Spider-Man. Great responsibility? Yeah, right.
@@elijahgemmill2000 well with joker, joker is nothing without Batman, he aknowlages it himself without Batman it's a joke without the punchline, that not the case for green goblin
That's why he's a legend, and moreso because he willing still wants to do his own acrobatics, in fact that was his condition to return to the franchise.
True. Bro nailed a character from a single movie years before flawlessly and while he knew he died in the movie with almost 100% chance of not coming back, he managed to do it as he is always prepared for it. I would have forgotten my personality even 10 years before lmao
Willem Dafoe will forever be the greatest Green Goblin to ever exist nobody can replace him. Its his maniacal laughter, wise villainish words, and the villain smile makes him a true villian.
@@joshdunne8792 And the best part? It's the perfect antithesis to spiderman's most important mantra: "With great power comes great responsiblity." That's why Green Goblin is to Spiderman what Joker is to Batman.
As he said in spider man 1 - attack his heart! This guy mentally breaks you down. Even when spiderman is punching his face in the guy just smiles and laughs as he takes pride in corrupting a heroic figure.
Villains like him don’t seek to kill or maim the hero (but don’t have qualms with it), their true victory is when the hero is broken or corrupted. They like to turn a heart of gold into black sludge. To leave nothing but a hollow shell, because it is simply a pleasure to them.
His origin, relationship with Peter, and attempting to ruin Spidey’s life are pretty much the only things he gets to do. As cool as his portrayal is, you only bring Goblin back unless there’s a new direction or purpose for him to fulfill.
I would've liked him causing some trouble in the MCU more. Concept arts had his hoodie being HAMMER tech merch, which I imagine would've hinted that in order to upgrade the glider and suit he broke into HAMMER after escaping, killed a bunch of people, and stole a bunch of tech. I'd like to see maybe some repercussions like maybe in Armor Wars they have one of the opening scenes or something be just the Goblin flying by dropping pumpkin bombs and laying waste to a facility (maybe the one Ned mentioned in NWH)
@@nathancruz9172I'm glad someone else noticed this. That's exactly why he joined Goblin so quickly. Because he remembered that it's exactly what he wanted to be.
Green Goblin became a bigger threat than Thanos all the sudden because he single-handedly nearly ripped the fabric of reality in the Multiverse beyond repair.
What's funny is how little movies actually use the "People want to see the hero fail" part. We used to get that a lot more. Now not so much. Lowers the threat of villains
I like how norman isnt even wrong about that, she was there because of peter but he twists the truth to put blame entirely onto peter to strike blow. So he went for the heart, he attacked peters heart!
What makes Goblin such a terrifying villain is that there's no reason to what he does. If there is a reason that motivates someone to do something, there are limits to what they'll do because there WILL come a point where an action will not align with the reason. That's where they'll stop. But Goblin? There's no reason behind his actions, just pure anarchy. Ergo, there is literally no limit to what he will do just for the sake of doing it. It's his boundlessness that is so scary.
@@user-ld8lv5py7k Green Goblin's goal was to unite the villains and convince them they could beat spiderman and that their powers are just as gifts as spiderman's is In spiderman 2002 his goal was to destroy anyone standing in Norman's way.
@@user-ld8lv5py7k Joker's goal was to shut down the Gotham mafia and get rid of batman because batman scared the thugs so much that even an ez drug deal had like 5 guards ontop of it
Green Goblin is terrifying, pushing Spider-Man to his limits, not only physically but mentally. Making him realize how much power he has but how limited he is due to wanting to be a hero. Being a hero, be ready to lose what you hold dear and your image due to the choice you make because in the end everyone will not love you.
"Do you know the ONE thing people love more than a Hero? It's to see a hero fail. Fall. Die trying. In spite of everything you've done for them, eventually they will hate you. Why bother?" Literally the same quote as "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain". Green Goblin already peaked the dialogue of the comic-book genre and it only just started.
Sometimes it isn’t the quotes but the mere scene of him laughing that made him terrifying, when MCU’s Peter actually gave him a beating over and over and Norman just laughs it off like it’s nothing, pure chills!
One of my favorite quotes from him is ‘I’m gonna finish her nice and slow.’’ at 1:35. It was so badass the way he said it! Most of his quotes are great though tbh!
The original green goblin is one of my favorite villains. He was broken by society's constant mistreatment, so he turned to his "bad side", seeking retribution and chaos on society. He initially offers a team-up to spiderman because he found resemblence in him, another guy with a loose screw in his head, condemned by society and yet doing something erratical as helping people regardless. Once he realizes that spiderman is not broken like him but consistently enduring society's hardship, he then follows spiderman around and throws even more dilemma at him like "you will never know when a lunatic will come along with sadistic choice of killing dozens of civilians or sacrificing your loved ones" and tries to prove that it's foolish to be a hero when people are cruel. He constantly tests him so that spiderman can see his point of view and hopes for him to realize saving "these disgusting people" is pointless. Spiderman refuses and believes in the good of people like his uncle Ben and his aunt. A broken man seeking vengence on humanity vs a scarred man trying to save and find good in humanity. This is so poetic
Spider-Man came out in 2002, No Way Home came out in 2021. Even after 19 years, Willem Dafoe had managed to play the Green Goblin just as good, if not better than his first time.
Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin really is one of the all time great CBM castings. The way he just slides effortlessly back into playing the Goblin over 19 years later for No Way Home and has that great Goblin laugh along with some fantastic dialogue reads.
0:17 Green Goblin: In spite of everything you've done for them eventually they will hate you. Anyone who sees Spider-Man:No Way Home? Well... Almost Everyone! This is Willem Dafoe's 4th appearance of this Movie. Spider-Man 1(2002,Main Villain) Spider-Man 2(2004,cameo) Spider-Man 3(2007,cameo) Spider-Man: No Way Home(2021,MCU Main Villain)
He was also kinda a Overarching Villain in Spider-Man 2 & 3 as he secretly motivated Harry (from the shadow) to go through with his vendetta and hunt down Spider-Man and convince him to destroy everyone close such as threatening Mary Jane and destroy their relationship.
@@agentzurg3592 he is definitely the villain that has had the greatest impact on the movies, both the old and the new. There’s just no other one quite like him… and Dafoe playing the role really reminds me of the Ledger Joker. They’re just iconic depictions that really showcase the greatness of both the actor, and the role/villain
My favourite quote from the Green Goblin was when he was facing Spider-Man in the ruins and said "GOBBLE GOBBLE SPIDER-MAN!" right before he got stabbed by his own Glider. What a Scene.
That first Spider-Man was such a fucking comic book movie That line is so goofy “Let die the woman you love! Or suffer the little children!” Such an 80s comic book line
@@NobodiesFan considering green goblin has been stated to be physically stronger than Spider-Man just less agile and the fact that spider man ripped the shield from caps arm … yes green goblin would decimate cap
@@funynonsence No, where did you get the info Green Goblin is stronger than Spiderman? Its the converse, Spiderman is stronger than Green Goblin, he only holds back because of his moral values unlike Goblin who doesn't care about the losses his actions bring. Superior Spiderman storyline proves it as well.
He died by his own glider in the first spider man; and, he almost got the same treatment in the recent movie but, the original Spider man stopped him! - the writers know irony. 😏
“Despite everything you have done for them, eventually they will start to hate you” is an extremely true quote in practically every superhero movie ever!
This is one of the points of Zack Snyder's Superman films. People questions Superman's intention no matter how pure Clark's intentions to do good in his own terms. They criticize his actions despite what Clarks good intents are. Then after he died, suddenly people are mourning.
it's crazy how in the end of the first movie, the real Norman Osborn returns and begs for his life "don't let him take me back" and then midway the goblin takes control over again and pretends to be Norman Osborn when he says "I was always like a father to you, be like a son to me"
The one thing I wish we got in no way home was many more goblin quotes in that gravely delivery of the raimi movies like the "In spite of everything you've done" We did get a couple good ones during the hallway fight and the ending fight but not enough
To give an idea of just how much time had actually passed between Spider-Man 2002 and No Way Home... I saw Spider-Man 2002 on opening week as a 4th grade kid. I saw Spider-Man NWH on opening night as a 5th grade teacher.
People sleep way too much on the "I was how she trapped you, fighting her holy moral mission(...)" quote. The pushing to be good, the expectation of sacrifice from a hero. I know that's the point of Spider-Mans story, but it also brings attention how Spider Man is also expected to be good and sacrifice things for others. It gives a certain "understanding" where Goblin is coming from.
thank god for Endgame and No Way Home. these movies brought back characters that I never thought we’d possible see again. Thank god for time travel and doctor strange magic
