Nicolette Korpolinski Lol, I just posted a few paragraphs expressing, essentially the exact same sentiment as you did, in my own comment! Only mine was ridiculously long-winded 😂😂! 👍
"Why was this movie bad?" Pretty much everything y'all said you loved about the movie was absent from the theatrical cut. I haven't seen it since it came out but I'm pretty sure there were zero scenes of Hal and Hector as kids. I don't recall having any idea that the movie intended that Hal and Hector knew each other as kids. None of the duality between Hal and Hector was set up early in the movie and so all the duality beats later in the movie fall flat. The shot where Hal and Hector fall opposite each other means nothing in the theatrical cut. I was amazed that y'all liked the Hot Wheels Rescue because again, the set-up for that was absent from the theatrical cut. I think we see the hot wheels track appear in the one early nephew scene with no context. When the Hot Wheels Rescue appears at the gala it comes out of nowhere and it just feels silly. The theatrical cut really de-emphasized Hector's story and his motivation and without that it seems like the movie lost all its thematic depth. I hated Green Lantern in the theater (and I love the character and mythos) and now I'm really interested in giving the Extended Cut a chance.
It also didn't help that the visuals of Parallax reminded everyone of the representation of Galactus as basically being a giant cloud in Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer from a few years prior. I had never heard about the extended cut of GL.
I think its also the environment it was released in. If I remember correctly there were previous "Cloud monsters" and this just seemed unoriginal in that department. Beyond that it was mostly hate on the over use of CG (his outfit) which the tech wasn't able to do effectively.
The difference between the two is why you should be leary of studio notes for your sci-fi movie from the same people that messed up Fantastic Four and its silver surfer sequel and its reboot? . And the xmen trillogy. Daredevil/Elektra , almost didnt release Deadpool, can i blame Firefly on them no wait that was the tv side ... wow there are a lot of mistakes here all because it wasnt what they wanted. Actually, if you're making a sci-fi/comicbook movie ... just dont go to 20th century/Fox studios. I
A thing that I really liked about this movie that was not mentioned: On Blake Lively's desk there is a copy of Pokemon Sapphire, a jokey little hint to how her character becomes Star Sapphire in the comics.
Just one thing of the comics that was not in this film. Again, not that it bothers me, but a reason why other people can miss it. I mean, I can see people go: this should be a tv-series, just for the length they need.
Wow. I've only ever heard bad things about this movie but this video really makes me want to see it. I love how you guys always look for the good in the movies you watch. It's an inspiration to be more positive.
The extended cut is an entirely different movie from the theatrical release. Which is a damn shame. Keep up the great work! This is my favorite YT series going on.
man, I love how Deep Dive is about love. Every single movie they've watched they've watched them with love. I need more of these love and understanding in my life.
For a movie where color is so important, the B&W segments were particularly hilarious. Bonus for the close up of the grey strawberry shortcake Oreos. Nailed it.
@@filmjoy I think the movie was nuked in popular opinion by the comic nerds, myself included. Long story short, this was a borderline bastardization of the comics. They tried to shoehorn waaaaay too much imo. That and using a weapon, that of which is powered by the entity you want to defeat, to try and defeat it? Sinestro's logic is akin to using napalm to fight a forest fire. Sinestro himself being underserved by this film. Like I said in my other comment, check out the stuff by Geoff Johns run on the book if you can. It's what put him at the head of DC.
I understand wanting to use the format of black and white for watching and color for interview but the colors for this specific movie kinda are important.
@@Draliseth I just commented something like this, but more nuanaced. And I'm not so bummed about it, but yes, as often: the book is better than the film. This is indeed... Well Green Lantern by Johns is one of the best comics book runs ever. Period. If you think this film was good, just imagine how great that run is.
It really sucks that, because of the Algorithm Sentinels, you guys have to audio distort and color desaturate the parts with the movie. You're one of the only groups to actually praise it, but ya can't use ACTUAL clips or the whole video gets pulled down...
Is it just me, or have you guys brought this show to a whole new level? The intro was the best yet, but I swear you are the most fun when just interacting with each other. And that rawr! I know I've seen this movie before, but I honestly don't remember it at all. This video makes me feel like the extended cut is far more memorable than the theatrical cut. I wonder if it's on Netflix or Amazon prime or something? Anyways, you guys were awesome as per usual and my day is much brighter because of this video.
So grateful for this video. My dad and I both honestly love this movie, and I think the (unfair) backlash against this is largely responsible for the grimdarkedgelord DC cinematic universe we have now, which is a huge bummer because things could have been fun toy cars but now they're not.
Well, I'm not the biggest DC fan, but even in comics between Wonder Woman, Aquaman, but especially Batman & Green Lantern overall the tone is not that erm.. Bright. Doesn't help the cinematic misses Teen Titans / Young Justice and Justice Society, which also is generally brighter than Justice League. That's my view on it, as a somewhat Marvel Zombie.
"Why was this movie bad?' Because you have to make sure everyone on the internet knows how cool you are by pissing on the next trendy thing to hate. You immediately elevate yourself to elite status while risking not one ounce of effort to create something yourself. This channel is a breath of fresh air in a sea of cynicisms. Thank you.
That's literally the reason why the channel exists/its whole mission statement - to be a film analysis/film studies/film criticism channel that tries to focus on POSITIVE analysis and CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and shine the spotlight on GREAT films and even when looking at a BAD film, shine the spotlight on the GOOD aspects of it - the things that it did WELL. And specifically _because_ this site is positively *OVERFLOWING* with film analysis/criticism channels that are so incredibly obsessed with just shitting on bad movies and the things that movies did poorly. Thanks in large part to that worthless, talentless, creatively bankrupt asshole Doug "The Nostalgia Critic" Walker and the shitty, toxic, often predatory cronies who help him run his shows. He was so influential on early RU-vid/internet film review and practically everyone just imitated him, to the massive detriment of this whole entire genre! And I think the culmination of that trend is the existence of fucking CinemaSins - the absolute WORST film review/analysis/criticism channel on RU-vid, with their petty, nitpicky, hyper-negative bullshit. But fortunately there has been a lot of pushback on that in recent years and we're starting to get more and more channels that are unafraid to be wholly unique instead of just aping the popular format and focusing on positivity instead of the much easier to focus on negativity. Channels like this one and 100 Years of Cinema and The Royal Ocean Film Society (absoLUTELY go and check those channels out if you like what FilmJoy does, seriously, for real, you won't be disappointed, especially with Royal Ocean). And I think that THIS trend has culminated in the existence of *CinemaWins* - literally the exact inverse of CinemaSins, made as a direct rebuke to that awful channel's bullshit.
You have to watch the Theatrical Cut to answer "Why is this movie bad?" because the theatrical cut was bad. We weren't unkind to that cut of the movie at all. From the looks of it, had they released this extended cut, we might have an entirely different Superhero Movie Genre, particularly for the DCEU... but they didn't release it in theatres, and so we have the Snyderverse for DCEU.
...why does that sound familiar? Oh yeah that's basically the story of every other dceu movie made. Except wonder woman which ironically I heard was terrible before reshoots and edits.
You heard wrong. There were no reshoots on Wonder Woman. Granted no one can really say what was done to it in the edit, but a lot of movies are found/made/saved in the edit.
The ridiculous amount of finding the bright side skills you guys have is not just inspirational but more the of the light at the end of a dismal cinematic tunnel. Thank you guys for doing these!
Love this series--seen 'em all. Tbh, I think the extended cut works wonders for this movie. The cinematic version leaves a lot out, and the filmmakers get some blame there, sorry. Awesome that Wonder Woman is Mikey's fave DC hero--mine too.
Your talk abt Sinestro’s name made me think more abt Hector’s name. Sure enough, turns out to hector is to speak in a bullying way; I’m not sure I’ve seen that one as a villain name before. Anyway, I love the show, I love that the episodes are getting even longer, and thank you for all the work and love you all put into it.
Never in my life did I actually want to REWATCH Green Lantern. Seems to me the Extended cut fixes the Harold as the villain problem. I feel with those extra story beats, less CGI/ more practical effects, a tightened up script, and a more consistent tone across the movie, (like Parallax not getting punched into the sun is ridiculous): Green Lantern would've been not a failure. But because of it we got MOS and WW so ig there's pro's and con's. Glad I watched this though, I always like Ryan as Hal and other parts of the movie. Shame
Yay! This series makes me so happy. I must have either gone in with the wrong mindset or the extended cut really helps fix many of its flaws, because I did not like this movie on first viewing, and I am generally super forgiving of “bad” movies. I’m tempted to give it another shot. Sam’s mildly inappropriately timed laughter throughout is my favorite. On-screen inserted text commentary is only getting funnier. Further yay for continuing with this fabulous series. 😊
i love this show/channel, but man there's no way I could ever survive a movie session with you guys. i hate any noise/distractions when watching a movie so the constant pausing & snack noises & talking over movie dialogue would absolutely do my head in! :/ (but keep up the good work tho) haha :)
I remember having fun with the theatrical cut of Green Lantern when it came out. I should probably watch the extended cut someday. You have my attention. Nice video. Well played guys!
Green Lantern's always been one of those films to me where I'm betting people a lot of people didn't actually hate it, at best they might have been bored or uninterested or fixating on small flaws, but the internet said it was bad so they made themselves hate it because being negative makes you seem cool online (Kind of like Spider-Man 3 or The Last Jedi). So I'm really glad I've finally seen on thing online that focuses on its qualities. :) The straight to DVD film Green Lantern: First Flight was pretty good too, it tackles the origin from a different angle, more like a 'new cop first week on the job' sort of thing with Sinestro as the experienced partner and has them investigating interplanetary crime. He doesn't punch a monster into the sun, but he does crush a guy between two planets.
Man watching you guys watch movies is *really* fun! Great editing on these videos too. I love watching you try dumb snacks, and goof on picking the next movie.
Someone else in the comments already pointed out how the theatrical cut was basically a manifest destiny, if you're destined to be good you can fail repeatedly and still be given endless opportunities, and if you're meant to be evil you will be situation... the theatrical cut also removed many scenes with Hector Hammond showing his humanity, resulting in this cut being wildly ableist as he's portrayed as simply a Weird Guy who of course falls to evil easily. I'd argue even the director's cut falls into the trope of the "evil cripple" as the character is eventually wheelchair bound as his body is literally, physically warped by a corrupting force, while our hero is an able-bodied and handsome man.
atracaelum I was looking through the comments to see if anyone had written about this. I’m really curious about the extended cut after watching this, but the thing I hated about the theatrical cut was that it had the message: if you’re good you’re mainstream beautiful, and if you’re evil you’re mainstream ugly, and that made me so upset. I’m very curious about how much the theatrical cut gives him humanity and shows the fear monster (and the father I suppose) as the actual villain.
They make a great case for this. However I've always known that all the pieces were there for this movie. I honestly think there are a lot of moments and ideas that aren't followed through on. Haven't seen the extended version though. It could have been bigger and more emotional and more action packed but it wasn't.
I'm glad to see you guys felt the same way about Hectar. I rented this movie from Blockbuster when I was 12 and the only thing I remember about it is feeling bad that an innocent, good man was turned into a monster against his will.
I just realized that I'm pretty sure this movie was the first thing that ever told me courage was being brave when you're afraid, not just never being afraid at all
From my experience, most of the people I know that disliked this movie did so because it was fairly bland, and looked cheaply made. In all honesty, I have never understood why it has gotten as much hate as it did. I didn't hate it, but I never felt strongly enough to deeply examine it either. The only beef I had with it was Ryan Reynolds characterization was more Guy Gardener than Hal Jordan.
So, it sounds like the extended cut might be an improvement on the theatrical release. It can happen. The extended cut of Batman v. Superman added back in basically 30-minutes of Superman footage and did significantly improve the movie. Still not a great movie, but one that made much more sense. I did see Green Lantern in the theater and bought a copy to watch it again, but haven't watched it since. I enjoy it on a certain level along with other inoffensively middling early-2000's super-hero movies like Daredevil and Fantastic Four. However, my three takeaways from this video are: 1) the concepts and character designs of the Green Lantern Corps (which already existed in the comics) are strongly appealing even when poorly executed; 2) a talented, charismatic cast can buy you a lot of good will; and 3) you can enjoy this movie if you go in with the right level of expectation.
The directors cut definitely makes this movie more enjoyable. When I first saw this movie I knew nothing about Green Lantern so I expected the movie to accurately portray why Green Lantern was chosen and what the Green Lantern core was.
Other people have commented on it (most notably Sam Adams) but I also want to add that you guys have a way of taking movies in that I think most people do not have. It's not just that you have positive attitudes (although you sure do and it's great) but that you speak the language very fluently. So you catch things that I, more or less a regular audience guy, completely miss, and it changes the tenor of the entire proceedings. The extended cut apparently only added nine minutes. Maybe those were super crucial nine minutes that contained the missing setups.
I was looking forward to this! You guys are so much fun. I'm glad you liked Green Lantern - Extended Cut! :) Now you gotta go back in time and save Ryan from Dead Pool.
God this show is so fucking positive. It makes me so glad. These are people who just love everything cinema talking about cinema that most people hate and making a point to say this movie is worth a chance. It's beautiful, a stream of positivity from a group of like-minded and creative people. And that is rare
I hadn't watched this video until now because i was just going to be sad that yet ANOTHER video was trashing Green Lantern which I think has been woefully underrated for years. I am not even a fan of the comic, never read it, but this movie is MUCH better than it has been given credit for. I am glad to see these folks came out with a positive perspective in hindsight. This is such a cool movie that deserved to become a franchise and I'm sad that it has been the product of so much mockery, hopefully people will come back and take a new look.
THANK YOU! I remember when this movie came out, I thought there were flaws in it, but a perfectly good movie. I could NOT understand why it was excoriated. I still don't.
But, they're not talking about the movie you saw. They watched the extended cut; it's a completely different movie. The original cut was and still is deservedly hated because it had so little of these character building moments; it rushed through a lot of what makes the movie great. The action and CGI couldn't make up for what was being (sadly) left on the cutting room floor, so the audience was (sadly) left bored or angry by the end of it all.
I disagree. Mark Strong's physical and emotional performance, seeing Angela Bassett portray Amanda Waller as a tower of iron will (as her character was originally designed by John Ostrander) rather than an evil bureaucrat, seeing the entire Corps in a way that showcased the diversity of alien life forms...these were unqualified wins for me. I fully acknowledge that the movie was flawed, and the theatrical cut even more so, but that didn't take away from what was strong.
I think the main reason I don’t like this movie is because it takes elements directly from Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern: Secret Origin comic and has no idea how to properly incorporate it. Like half of Hal’s character in this movie is taken from Kyle Rayner with the talk of fearlessness vs courage. Hal’s story is more one of responsibility and learning to be selfless. Parallax in the movie is a combination of the comic version and Krona, a rogue guardian. I guess parallax possessed krona in the movie bc it’d be reeeeally stupid if he wasn’t. Parallax is fear incarnate. It can’t be destroyed, simply contained. Also the bit with the necklace is directly ripped from a thing Kyle Rayner did for Donna Troy.
I'm not surprised the extended version would be more enjoyable. The one in theater felt like someone had cut 20-30min of material at random to get it into an as short as possible run time. It felt very disjunkt from the get go and at no point was it enjoyable as a movie experience.
It weird but I like the movie more in black and white. It gives the movie somehow a more comicbooky vibe (makes me want to redo it where the only colors are the green and yellow power effects)
To the point about Amanda Waller becoming the person she was in Suicide Squad in this movie, originally Green Lantern _was_ going to be the start of DC's movieverse along with Man of Steel. It's nice to know that a little of that stayed through Waller, even if she is the worst person. Ever.
I unfortunately don't have it on blue -ray to send, but I hope someday you can do The Lone Ranger. I thought it was very good, but apparently not many agree with me 😆
It doesn’t seem fair to watch the extended cut and then ask “Why didn’t people enjoy the theatrical cut?” Watch that version, then see how you feel. That being said, you’ve definitely encouraged me to give the extended version a chance.
My problem with this movie because Hal isn't written like his actual character because Hal is calm, cool, collected, he's a test pilot for crying put loud. He's not supposed to be Maverick from TOP GUN which is how he came off in the movie.
i feel like tweeting this at Ryan Reynolds? just so he can know that a period of his life wasn't as big a fuck up as it seems. i've always been such a weird fan of actors, i will watch the bad things and i will love them because the actor is doing The Most All Day and i feel like this is a prime example of that.
This is the sort of positivity the world needs. I don't know why people love belittling art so much. Even bad art is still something to be celebrated, or at least respected. It's okay to talk critique things, but devaluing something that had so much effort put into it is just unfair.
Glad I found deep dive... this show has made me really want to give some of these movies another shot... also omg doctor Waller was in this so green lantern was already part of the dceu. We could have had a proper justice league movie. So sad.
I never saw this in the theaters, but made sure to buy it on Blu Ray when it first became available. I genuinely liked it and still do. I never understood what the problem with it was.
