I introduce our new Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Smoker while I smoke a 9 pound pork butt to make pulled pork with. I purchased the smoker on Amazon and you can find it on our Amazon shop (link below). We will be using this on weekends when we go camping in our NuCamp Tab 400 Travel Trailer.

Also recently got one of these Davey Crockett smokers from GMG and it's the VERY BEST SMOKER I have ever used!! So easy and end product is amazing. Ribs, pulled pork, brisket, all have been awesome. Only thing I would add is that the manual says to NOT ADJUST TEMP UNTIL THE START UP TEMP REACHES 150. Aside from that, great video and thanks for sharing.

Excellent video Patrick. I've had the same model for about 2 years. i went to pellets a few years ago looking for the set it and forget as you described and GMDC has certainly stood the test. Remarkably stable grate surface temps when compared to the Traeger which was OK at best when it worked. Again thank you as there's not a lot out there about the GMDC

Your wrapping technique leaves a lot to be desired. I recommend the extra heavy duty and larger Reynolds Food Service Foil No. 632, available on Amazon and other places. This foil is larger in dimensions and much thicker. Proper wrapping technique does not require a double wrap even for a big pork butt. Also, it is great for wrapping the grease pan on the Davy Crockett, making clean up a lot easier.

Great video for one shopping for pellet grill. I'll watch again when it comes time to smoke/grill. My concern is simple movement without lifting 68 lbs.; from a covered porch to an outside stoop. I want to use a utility cart and the dimensions of the feet would help in choosing one. It may appear most stated dimensions use the included side wire shelf for length. Does anyone know just the dimensions of feet L x W?
@reallycarolyn6158
@reallycarolyn6158 4 года назад
Nice review. Do you still use the smoker? A couple of suggestions. As a rub, 50-50 kosher salt and freshly ground (big flakes) black pepper. Put it on thick. When you shred, you'll disperse throughout. The pepper is really nice. A Texas thing. Second: brine a turkey breast overnight. Cook at about 225. It will cook slow initially, then temperature will rise rather quickly towards the end. Takes may be 2 to 2.5 hr. Slice a couple of sweet potatoes in half and stick them to the side. Still working this one out, but smoked sweet potatoes is excellent!
@TravelswithDelaney
@TravelswithDelaney 4 года назад
We do use the smoker and love it! I did a dry brine on a turkey for Thanksgiving this year and it turned out wonderful. My uncle did a wet brine for our Christmas turkey and it also was wonderful.

Have you tried the traeger Ranger? Does the DC hold set temp? My traeger scout can be set at 180 and shoot up to 370. And when I set it at 225 it goes well over 400.

Very well done video! How long does it take the grill to get to 240 degrees once you start it? How long to get to 500 degrees? Also, you mentioned that it keeps a fairly consistent temperature. How much can it fluctuate throughout a low and slow cook?
@TravelswithDelaney
@TravelswithDelaney 5 лет назад
Thank you! I honestly haven't timed it but now I will have to do that. My guess is around 10-15 minutes to go get up to 225. I have not seen more than a 5 degree variance when cooking.

I notice you don't show folding the legs up to use as the carrying handle. While this unit is much smaller than regular smokers, it's still very heavy. When the legs are folded up to use as a carrying handle, moving it around isn't to bad. But moving it, to being on those legs, to the up position is a bear because there is only one small handle on the pellet bin side and the unit is wicked heavy. The app looks great but I can't get it to connect to the smoker or the smoker to it so useless to me. But using it in manual mode is easy enough and while heavy, it can be taken camping much easier that needing a toy hauler for a full size smoker.

That 28# bag was $29 on Amazon. They seem a bit high compared to others. I bought a 20# bag of Lumber Jack brand this weekend at Rural King for $8.99. I will see how they do compared to the more expensive Green Mountain Brand. And I think I still have enough from that first bag for another 4 hour smoke

Menards sells a good brand of pellets for a pellet grill $18 for 40 lbs. Walmart is about the same. The best price I've found. For Green Mountain brand, check around your local area for a dealer. I get 28 lb bags for $15 at a local dealer for Green Mountain products.

3rd time to try a comment may be the charm. 1st attempts my battery died. 2nd attempt I got a phone call. Ok. Here goes. Nice smoker and it is smaller than our Traeger. We are wondering how you fit all your camping gear into your 4 Runner and under your 400 bed area. We have a Toyota Tacoma and fill our truck bed up with gear. The back seat is reserved for our 2 dogs. Also, what type of gray water container do you use? We had a large one, but it was too high to drain the gray tank.
@TravelswithDelaney
@TravelswithDelaney 5 лет назад
We save the back seat as well for Truman. For the bigger trips, we do use our Thule Room Container which gives us more space. Also, what we actually need to carry varies from trip to trip. For instance, the Turkey Run Trip, we took the smoker but we didn't need a generator or solar panel since it was just a weekend trip with electric hookups. For the big summer trips, we will take a generator, solar panel, etc but we definitely won't have room for the smoker on that type of trip. I had a small 5 gallon blue tank that I used for the grey water but I never used it this summer so I quit carrying it. I found the 5 gallon bucket that I carry beside the propane tank works just fine for taking water out of the grey tank.

Been wanting a smoker for years and I am looking to finally take the plunge. I am completely new to all of this and been researching all day and then decided to narrow my search on best pellet smoker for beginners. This one came up in the list and has piqued my interest. Would you recommend this for a newbie? Can one buy something to raise it up? Other smokers I like are too expensive. 800 dollars and up. Perhaps those are more for the serious smokers and may last longer? Which model do you recommend? So difficult to decide on this.
@TravelswithDelaney

I’ve had ours now for a year and a half and love it. This model, the Davy Crockett, is the portable one so it’s smaller and does set lower. I think the Daniel Boone is the next size up and sets higher at more of a grill height. I know it costs more but not sure how much more.

Nice demo! Two questions. 1. Did you research other smokers? why this one? and, 2. It sounded bit noisy, is that a potential campground issue? (So that's question 1a and 1b, and question 2.)
@TravelswithDelaney
@TravelswithDelaney 5 лет назад
I did a little research and looked at several different ones. I really like this one since it was portable to give us the option to take it camping with us. I honestly could have gotten a full size Pit Boss for about the same price right now at Rural King but I really liked the tailgater option. Also, I had seen on Amazon a comment where someone complained there's wasn't working right and Green Mountain actually responded and then the customer did a follow up saying they had replaced his unit and the new one was working fine. That is the level of customer service I love and so that was actually a tipping point reading that. 2. It sounds noisier on our porch than it actually is in a campground. I was worried about that but honestly when we had it at the state park two weeks ago, you could barely hear it outside of our site.
@gregg7519

Loved the video but I was a little concerned that you would have to eat all of the pulled pork by yourself (and of course Patty would help) so my suggestion would be to make sure you have a professional present at all smoke events that can closely monitor the pork consumption. I am officially confirming that I am such a professional so feel free to contact me when the need arises. I was just wondering ..... would it perform as well in different locations?? I am officially confirming that I am offering a different location where you can perform such experiments.

LOL! It was very good and we were able to put quite a bit in the freezer for later this winter.

That looks great! Can I ask how many pounds of pellets did you use on this cook?

Bill Dobberpuhl I’d say close to 8-9 pounds of pellets were used. The hopper holds 9# according to the specs.

I'm curious. Since it's called a tailgater does it have a way to plug it into your car? I guess you would need an inverter for that. Also how much does the smell of the smoker penetrate your car? It looked delicious. 4R rubs are my favorite too.

It comes with the 110 plug, the 12v plug so you can plug into your car's cigarette lighter and it also comes with battery clips if you want to plug it directly onto a battery. We didn't notice the smell at all coming home from Turkey Run State Park.

Question - after wrapping the pork butt in foil, does the smoke from pellets actually permeate thru foil? If not, would it be prudent to save pellets (cost?) for future use and finish the meat in low oven (assuming home or have in camper)? Per your suggestion Patrick, we are looking forward to getting the DC smoker (appropriate since we live in TN ;- } for our holiday turkey! BTW, our favorite bbq place in western NC is Haywood Smokehouse and they make a Japple (jalepeno /apple) sauce that is awesome on pork (www.haywoodsmokehouse.com/)

I suppose you could finish it in the oven on low temperature. You are probably right that you won't get smoke once its wrapped in the foil. FYI - You won't be able to do a large turkey on the Davy Crockett. My guess is 12-15 pounds at most. If you are wanting to do a bigger bird, you would probably want to go with a bigger grill such as the Daniel Boone. That sauce sounds amazing!! We will have to meetup again next year and do some smoking together. Cal and I will have fun feeding everyone with smoked meats.

Could you fit a whole brisket on it?

Ethan Baker I believe you could. It would fill up the whole grill.
