Root Doctor (www.rootdoctorband.com) performs the classic Memphis soul staple "Green Onions", featuring Jim Alfredson on the Hammond organ.
Jim Alfredson is also the organist for the jazz trio organissimo (www.organissimo.org) and plays the Hammond XK Traditional System with a Hammond XK3 and a Leslie 3300. The front of the video is an interview with Jim about his early years and influences.
Root Doctor is Freddie Cunningham on lead vocals, James Williams on bass and backing vocals, Jim Alfredson on keys and backing vocals, Greg Nagy on guitar and backing vocals, and Bobby Gardner
on drums. More information about Root Doctor and more music can be found at the website (www.rootdoctorband.com). Root Doctor's music can be found at iTunes and Amazon among others.
Root Doctor's latest CD is "Live At The Cadillac Club" which features a cover of another Booker T classic, "Hip Hug Her" (a video is also here on RU-vid). "Live At The Cadillac Club" hit number 8 on the Living Blues charts for October 2008 and won the WYCE Jammie Award for Best Blues Album. Root Doctor's previous CD, "Change Our Ways", got the band nominated for a Blues Music Award and also won a WYCE Jammie Award for Best Blues Album.

This music was on the radio when I started playing in "67". The next year at Xmas time I was with my older brother and Dad in NYC. We went out to dinner at a club and I didnt understand why we paid to get in to eat. The special was Southern fried Chicken N Waffles. We sat at a long banquet table and behind us an organ player rose up from the stage flood behind us it was JIMMY SMITH. This was one of my best memories. The sound of this Hammond reminds me of that. It was the Jazz sound of that time.

Sort of like borrowing a classic car and going for a drive through beautiful country landscapes, this version honors a great song in the process of taking it to new places.

I used to play Green Onions back in the day with a Beach Music band from NC but I never played it like this. Jim gives his version of this song new meaning with his mastery of the Hammond. Outstanding my friend. May God continue to bless others with your wonderful talent.

Truly inspired. As a drummer I have been wanting to play Hammond organ for 40 odd years now and this guy and his band smokes. They have respected this Hammond classic and carefully applied their own creative layer. The solo is definitely JS inspired and afer hearing Booker T live recently I reckon its a credit to his legacy. Over to the haters! Mark

Thank you for the compliments. I like a clean organ sound; its just a personal preference. I like the organ to start to grunge up only at the very top of the dynamic range, when you're really pushing it. That's just me.

I remember when this first came out. Always enjoyed the shuffle pattern. I was playing drums in a trio, with a B3 player who could run some fierce bass on the peddles, and a screeming blues guitar player. Fun times for sure. And triplets were a great break up to the shuffle. And the bass player here, is sure layin down some solid foundation. The rebar before pouring the cement, if you will.

Jim. Just know that whenever I want to smile from ear to ear, I play this video. The way you build it is truly inspiring to me, a person who's played the organ since I was 4. I get too excited too quickly (ok I know what that sounds like but keep on track:) and I lose focus. So, the focus and control that it takes for you to play this song is what makes me smile. Come to Cleveland! There's an awesome room in which I've seen Brian Auger, called "Night Town" where you'd go over well. In other words, the crowd can appreciate good music. Keep it up bro!

Sounded great. Caught how the drummer got a little 'sly' around 1:40... and, how the organ player smiled instantly after he picked up on it. In its own right... This is an excellent version of the song!
