I’ve gone through three greenworks 80v battery packs in about a year of owning. Very disappointing. I have neither the tools, nor aptitude for what you’ve done to revive your battery pack(s). You don’t offer a reconditioning fee to do mine, do you?

Send me your 3 and I'll send back one fixed, & a balance port monitor.

That worked a lot better than I expected. How hot does the battery get after running like that? Laptop batteries are usually made for high capacity, but low rate of draw (4-6A max). Tool batteries usually need high draw when under load (10-20A) and therefore aren't often as high capacity. I'd guess the 2-stage blower or mower might be too much for those cells. I've wanted to do a build/rebuild like this, so I'm glad to see it works, as long as the cells are relatively balanced.

Thanks for watching, yes, I was surprised how well it did, especially on one string of batteries! I haven't checked hotness, but as you correctly pointed out, LiIo are not built for high current applications, and are probably flaming to the touch, but sadly that's how they come from the factory. Not designed for longevity, oh well. Best of luck on your rebuild!

Great video I might have to do this repair to my 80v battery as well. I'm curious as to where you got the wholesale laptop batteries from? 9nline resource or a local store?
@chargerr4807
@chargerr4807 2 года назад
They can be found in onnline auctions. I believe the ones I have purchased were from those with Amazon returns, so luckily I found a small cache of laptop batteries. :)

Is this 80V 4A or 2A battery module? What is the part number marked on the battery?

Great video, One question. What did you use to weld the straps to the batteries>

Thanks for watching! I have a home-made spot welder. Basically a car battery attached to a starter solenoid, powered by a small Arduino for proper pulse timing. A few people have asked me about it, I should probably make a video about it, but if you search, there are already plenty of RU-vid vids out there about those. :)

At 23:08, did you wind up disassembling the pack to individually charge the cells.
@chargerr4807
@chargerr4807 2 года назад
Yes, I used a single cell lithium charger and charged each each low bank up to 4V, so all banks had roughly 4V, then the charger kicked in and balanced everything properly. So the final driveway test was maximum power. :)

great stuff, thanks for sharing. question, i have some of these batteries where it looks like all of the cells are good but the little battery indicator/BMS board on them is bad. Is there any way to replace that? Any suggestions on where to find the right board?
@chargerr4807
@chargerr4807 2 года назад
Hi there, if you mean other generic battery packs, other than the Greenworks, then yes, most likely a universal BMS will do the trick. But if the packs are for lawnmowers, commercial products, etc, then a universal one will probably not allow it to charge on the OEM chargers, but may still work on the product. If you can provide more detail, I can give you a better answer.
@FrankGraffagnino
@FrankGraffagnino 2 года назад
@@chargerr4807 i have the greenworks pro 80V 2AH battery packs. I was thinking instead of getting a universal BMS, if I could somehow find the used circuit board from a dead greenworks battery that might let me fix it, but i'm not sure how hard it is to replace that board. Mine has flexible printed circuit board to each of the cells and not whole wires (hope that makes sense)
@chargerr4807
@chargerr4807 2 года назад
@@FrankGraffagnino OK, so that is the same battery pack I repaired, but perhaps you have a different version of it, dunno I would need to see pics. But usually the BMS is ok, but the batteries are bad. Have you measured each battery for voltage? They should all be above 3V. If some are close, possible the BMS has already shut down, maybe just resetting the balance wire connector may fix things? Or perhaps charging up the low cell individually might bring it back to life.
@FrankGraffagnino
@FrankGraffagnino 2 года назад
@@chargerr4807 yeah, I realize that usually it is a cell but I can assure you that isn't the case here. All cells measure good voltage and the total voltage is around 80 volts. But when I push the button on the battery meter nothing comes on and I can hear a tiny buzz. The charger doesn't flash red or anything it just doesn't detect a battery. So I'm fairly certain it is one of the two circuit boards, most likely the one with the battery meter since I can hear that tiny buzz. On a good one I don't hear any buzz

@@FrankGraffagnino Hmmm.. OK, the sounds like something has gone wrong with the PCB. For a replacement board, you might want to scour Alibaba, usually you can find a clone, or just the circuit board + shell for a diy repair job. If you went with a universal, it would definitely not detect or charge it, but you'd have power for the snowblower, and you could charge it seperately? Best of luck, report back if you find something! :)

I need to repair 60V but not able to open its cap as those screws seems not actual screws but some pivoting they did. Any idea how to open the cap for it ?

Do you have any information on the pin outs of the Greenworks 80V battery or any information on the 80V charger?

I have an 80V battery 2.5Ah that came with a new leaf blower I purchased from Greenworks. Already won't charge. It was down to 50V and the charger starts flashing green before switching to flashing red 15 seconds later. I used another Greenworks battery to get it up to 72V, but charger still won't charge it. All 20 individual cells measure at 3.6V Does that mean the problem is one of the boards on it? Thanks

I had a similar situation with a Ryobi 40V power pack. Even after I brought each cell up to the same voltage it would not charge in the charger. There is a reset on the logic board where you shorted 2 pins together briefly - after doing that it would charge. I don't know if the Greenworks boards have that - I did a quick google search and did not see anything. Someone DID suggest putting the battery in the freezer for like 30 minutes and see if it would charge than. That's worth a try - I know the logic board monitors temperature and if that part is defective it could prevent it charging...

And what to do if, after replacing the batteries, even the red button on the charger does not light up?
@chargerr4807
@chargerr4807 Год назад
Good question, everything just started working for me. But check the balance on the batteries, to make sure they are all within 0.1V of each other, and that the total V is approx 40. Then put it on the charger, in case the charger does some sort of init sequence. Otherwise, possibly the battery PCB has gone bad?

I bought a green works weed eater. The thing is great, BUT! Six months later the battery crapped out. Call the service line, waited for 35 minutes. Got tired and hung up. Called the next day, 45 minutes later I hung up. Their service sucks!

Sadly that seems to be common amongst all the battery powered product companies I have heard of recently. Even ebikes, like Daymak, you pay thousands for an ebike, 6 months warranty, and good bye. They CAN make a battery last the recommended 1000 cycles if they really wanted to, same as they can make a good LED light bulb if they wanted to. But comes down to money, so ... enjoy the product while it lasts, under the warranty period. :(

how do you measure battery's internal resistance?
@chargerr4807
@chargerr4807 2 года назад
I use a lithium battery tester to measure internal resistance. The one I use is the Lii-500 and I believe my TD610-Pro also does it. So probably most lithium charger/testers have the capability.
