I have no regrets purchasing my Greenworks 52" Optimus Z electric zero turn mower. It's a solid machine that is easy to use, cuts extremely well and nicely stores in my shed. Since it's a commercial grade unit, it would be overkill for smaller properties. I cut between 3-6 acres each use so it works perfect for me. Absolutely zero worries about not having enough battery power, rated for up to 16 acres on a single charge.
The 52" cutting deck makes it perfect for my yard and mowing around the various landscape features plus the open spaces. I use it to cut my neighbors fields too so its ruggedness in those bumpy areas is greatly appreciated. Equipped with 5 electric motors, 3 on the deck and one in each back wheel, gives it plenty of power to tackle any grass condition. I have cut at its maximum speed of 16 mph but that's definitely not typical usage. It controls well at the mid range (up to 8 mph) but the controls are a little sensitive at the upper end and it experiences some lurching too.
Even at the highest blade speed, this machine is quiet enough that ear protection isn't absolutely necessary like with engine based zero turn models. I listen to music using ear plugs and hardly hear any machine noise. I also appreciate not smelling like gas after cutting the lawn.
The seat is very comfortable, plush and can be adjusted for rider's weight and leg length. It greatly reduces jarring when cutting rough areas such as my neighbors field. It has nice lighting system too for those evenings when you are finishing up during dusk or even night time in the Fall.
Since its a commercial unit, the price is much higher than residential units. If you have the budget, I feel its definitely worth it because of the convenience of use. No messing with taking batteries in and out to charge them after each use. Just plug in the charger and unplug when charge is complete. The footprint is like a residential unit so storage is easy too.
Pros
- 18KW unit cuts up to 16 acres, 6 hours runtime
- Easy to use
- Powerful and can cut grass faster than any other unit
- No fumes or emissions
- Low noise
- Low vibration
- Low maintenance
- Unit location available 24/7 with app
- Excellent warranty (2000 hours or 5 years)
Cons
- Heavy, so pay attention to yard condition
Footprint
- L 71" x H 46.7" x W 61" (with discharge)
- 1440 pounds
Conclusion
The Greenworks Optimus Z Zero Turn mower is a great machine for landscaping companies but also homeowners with large yards who are looking for a powerful, versatile, and easy-to-use mower. It's expensive, but less than other equivalent commercial electric mowers out there. If you have the extra cash, I feel it's a worthwhile purchase to simplify lawn maintenance.
This video provides you with an end users perspective on what it’s like to own one. I just wanted to document my two cents about this machine. It turned out longer than I thought (just over 38 minutes) so best viewed when you want to kick back and relax. Be sure to watch to the end to enjoy some mowing music!

checked the specs, this thing is a beast. weight is not a problem, I would consider this comparable to a diesel zeo turn, like kubota 1211, 1611 or john deere z994r, z997r, all are much heavier than this and prices are similar. And this thing appears to be winning, good choice.

it's weight is only an issue when ground is really saturated. The power tends to begin slipping wheels before you realize it's happening. Tread fills with mud and bam, your stuck. The traction control has gotten me out a few times this Spring but other times had to use Jeep to pull it out. Getting stuck this season has only occurred while cutting irregular surface field and pasture. I agree it is a beast!

Thanks for the great review on this unit. Enjoyed it as I am looking to upgrade to going battery powered.

In my opinion, key to battery is make sure it will be enough for entire yard and then some.

It would be neat if these were designed to be charged on a CCS charge port so you could use a Level 2 EV charger which are becoming more common these days. Seems like a no brainer to me.

i feel the same way. Be the Toro Revolution or these, they should use the standard EV car charger

WONDERFUL ! ! Just got a bunch of EGO products actually. I did some research, etc, on both brand products, and they are both great GAS, OIL, FILTER, and EMISSIONS FREE options. Well done, SALUTE ! !

I agree and almost went with the EGO EV but in the end, having more than enough battery capacity made the decision for me.

Did you buy from a dealer that has a Greenworks showroom and stocks parts? What happens when something electronically goes wrong? How long will your machine be down?
@Joel-Melody
@Joel-Melody 3 месяца назад
@rickr2029 I bought from this dealer. www.sohars.com/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwltKxBhDMARIsAG8KnqV_AkRORnjhug7000FMhaFI8vEljwSrfq6tUTeIH8tPwu5j2niteM0aAsmsEALw_wcB They are a Greenworks commercial dealer and have a guy on staff dedicated to maintenance and repair of Ego and Greenworks products. I've not had to tap into those services yet, so I have no experience with turnaround time on parts orders.

@@Joel-Melody yeah...thanks for the link! That was nice of you! The dealer looks like a regular dealer selling mainly gas power equipment. I bought my Greenworks commercial used for commercial, from a similar dealer. They don't stock parts and it's a lengthy ordeal just to find out how to get replacement blades. They will have to order them and of course pass the $25 shipping fee on to me. They said they have had another unit waiting a "Super" long time to receive warranty approval. Have you tried calling Greenworks customer service? Oh boy?!?!?! So yeah, I am worried if one of the wheel motors, or a circuit board goes out and leaves me down for a while. I'm feeling I should have paid more attention to the reviews. But I thought there would be dealers maybe in the North Northeast or the west coast that would have a showroom of Greenworks products. Because that's important. And comforting!!!

@rickr2029 Being a residential user, having to wait some isn't a big concern since I can fall back on my John Deer gas mower. I definitely understand your concerns since your livelihood depends on the uptime of your equipment. Companies like Greenworks and others need to do better, or they will stifle market growth.

Well covered review. $27,000 for a mower, 04.24 MSRP, with no stereo, CD player, nor bidet; what's up with that? Deck Steel 7 gage is impressive. 42" Pro model, $4000 MSRP, has shameful 12 ga stamped deck, is in my niche corner. Blade engagement sound level was also impressive. I'm curious to know whether Greenworks applied the same LFP battery technology in all their applications. I believe it was Mean Green Mower you tried to recall, $30K for the Rival model. Thanks for the review.

Since I'm not a commercial user, I didn't need the 24Kw battery version. 18Kw is more than enough for my needs and that drops the $27,000 MSRP price you mentioned to $23,000. I believe the LFP battery technology is only used in their zero turn applications. The other tools rely on Lithium based battery packs. Yes, Rival Mean Green was the model I was stumbling around trying to remember in my video. Thanks for watching!

Any regrets? I’m definitely considering this or even the residential versions. I know it’s a huge expense but as someone who has to constantly pay others to work on my Gas Zero Turn the idea of less maintenance is very appealing.

I honestly don't have any regrets with it. It's nice not being concerned with gas, oil, belts, etc. Blades were easy to get off and sharpen. Cuts real nice, low noise and comfortable ride.

I'm glad you didn't edit that part out. We all make mistakes, and it's good to see mistakes so others learn ok maybe I'll make sure I don't do that. Helps us learn from each other.

The Greenworks model Walmart sells aren't commercial Optimus Z model. The Walmart units are residential mowers with much smaller batteries.

No. In fact the user manual states it should be disconnected from charger after 100% charge is achieved.

I'm fortunate to have a dealer about 10 miles. The first season ended with zero problems, so no dealer involvement necessary. I sharpen blades myself.

@markhammer1902 funny you assume I'm a liberal. I'm not! Such a narrow minded statement dude. You have no idea.

I had to assume you were a liberal because no conservative would be dumb enough to pay $24,000 for a lawn mower
@Joel-Melody
@Joel-Melody 24 дня назад
@markhammer1902 you wouldn't buy one because it's obviously well above your pay grade. Drawing lines like "no conservative would..." is such a stereotypical response. You are better than that, man.
