Greg hired me for my first-ever model making job. He seemed charmingly both flattered and impressed by my scratch-built Dark Star ship replica (twice the size of his original), displayed at a SFH&F con that he coincidentally attended for a discussion panel. I, of course, was completely star-struck and blown away in return. Improbably, that very-same Dark Star model that directly led to my working on Blade Runner, also wound up appearing in Blade Runner, as a cityscape building (lol!). What are the odds of THAT whole chain of events happening?! Great memories, all thanks to the greatest model maker I've known. And one of the coolest guys ever! And I'll always treasure the battle-damaged mini 'Lady Bug' ship model from Flesh Gordon that he randomly gave to me, for no reason other than that I was a huge fan of his work. Thanks for everything, Greg!

I just saw a photo from the Blade Runner reunion a few years back with your Dark Star model. Glenn Campbell took the photo, I believe. Great job!

@@piercefilm Thanks Berton! And thanks especially for S.o.S., and all these wonderful uploads to YT. For that reunion, Mark suggested I display it in 'Blade Runner configuration' (vertical), rather than 'Dark Star configuration' (horizontal). And I'm glad he did. Because really, it's now much more a part of Blade Runner than Dark Star; which I couldn't be more happy about. I'd love to see any photos of it from that amazing day. I didn't get around to taking any myself, except for one that I shot with Paul Sammon's cell phone. Paul's on the left side, and Dave Dryer's on the right. It was amazingly cool to see it framed between two legendary people like them!

@@piercefilm Yeah he’s a legend and such a great human! I’ve been so blessed to have worked with so many of these guys when I did special FX work on films from 87-07, what a crazy ride! I’ve been one of the lead sculptors in the model shop at Imagineering for the past 25 years too and a lot of us FX guys ended up there, so I’ve had the pleasure of working with a bunch of them there too, it’s been a blast! Thanks for posting these amazing interviews! Cheers😄👍

Models must keep you youthful because Greg never seems to age! I think the first interview with him I read was in "Fantastic Films" in 1978, spotlighting his work on "Flesh Gordon", "Dark Star", and "Close Encounters". He's right that "Flesh Gordon" was a launch pad for a lot of SPFX talent (and future Oscar-winners). I can remember seeing the lobby cards for it in the street display case of our local cinema when the movie was re-released in the later 1970s, and given the adult nature of the movie almost all of the lobby cards were of the models in the film. I still think of "1941" as a pinnacle achievement, but any movie that's had Greg's work in it has been better for it.

GREG-! 41 years later ... still continued thanks & gratitude for inviting me down to the 'ONE FROM THE HEART' model shooting stage. The same stage they shot the TOS STAR TREK on. In fact, I believe that it was the old Howard Anderson SFX Stage ..? As there was an old matte painting used in a couple of episodes made of paper on the bruised and battered walls ... Hope this finds you and yours well. D.A. ps: Several years before that, whilst I was a Sophomore in High School (1974) -- we first met at a STAR TREK CONVENTION in L.A. and I told you about 'SILENT RUNNING' being my all-time favorite film and you EVER SO COOL OUT OF THE BLUE sent me some pieces that fell off Doug Trumbull's VALLEY FORGE model. In the mid-80's I actually got to work for Doug at ShowScan in Editorial. You guys are my heroes to this day.

Amazing model-maker like no other. His collection recently sold at auction for $13+ million, which includes $3.3 million for the Red Leader X-Wing model from A New Hope, and a surviving original stormtrooper costume for $645K! RIP Greg, thanks for inspiring others in your craft.

Starting with my obsession with Close Encounters in 77 Greg’s Zelig-like status in the FX industry has been pretty amazing. For years, if the miniature FX were fantastic in any given film, he was involved in some way, or instrumental in their execution. Thank you for yet another excellent post

Thanks for doing a story on Greg. I've known him for many years, from his work with Bjo and Equicon, to work with my great friend, Tom Scherman, and seeing him at Mark's shop in Venice, working on a lander from "V". His TOS Enterprise for DS9 was for sale at the "Admiral's Collection" store at ST: The Experience in Las Vegas, with a $25K price tag on it. Greg is an absolute master modelmaker; wonderful friend and yet, a fan, too. P.S. love his "Dark Star" ship!!

Bill -- what years did you first start going to Equicon ..? For me, at age 12 (1971). Like Majel 'said on' one of the Convention Programs, 'Just Imagine' ... and I did and that lead to me working in the movie & TV industry for nearly 50 years now using my imagination. D.A.

@@MeBeTheDB I went in 1977, in San Diego, and 1978, LAX, then I think 1980 at the Marriott near LAX. Saw Tom Scherman's 20K Leagues display, etc... I created the first lighted TOS Enterprise model kit, wrote the SFAM books on it, and then made the first lighted refit "E" kit in 1984. I also made desk props for ST: Enterprise, JAG, and Agents of SHIELD.

The late Andy Yanchus was one of the model makers who made the 1/10 scale Black Beauty for the Green Hornet. He worked at Aurora Models and said that since they were not in the model makers union the cars had to be 'leased' from Aurora. They disappeared after shooting and are probably in someone's private collection but no one publically knows.
