I love the way Greg just talks away as he walks along checking on his animals and pastures. They talk about whatever catches their eye. It reminds me of whenever I was lucky enough to tag along behind my Grandpa. It feels like I'm right there with them. Touches my heart every time I hear Greg call Jan "Honey". I love my dogs but I agree with Jan... mine are taught "Don't lick" from day one. (I never broke Diego the Border Collie though. :)

Greg, the rose you commented on around 2:00 appears to be one of our native Missouri roses, likely Rosa setigera or “Prairie Rose.” It forms larger pink flowers and is not nearly as aggressive as the invasive Rosa multiflora, which makes clusters of small white flowers. So, don’t let the sheep beat themselves up over not having taken care of it yet-ha! A nice native that provides good habitat for wildlife.

That's quite a bit like the best of my forested land--that I'm taking the trees from and adding sheep and goats to. Here at the house I have mint and a bit of soggy bottom. I hope to be able to run the sheep such that they always have enough high ground to avoid issues. I'm with you--quite sure that animals don't naturally eat things that are toxic to them unless they're hungry and all their favorites are depleted. Our blackberries are just now ripening, saw the first ripe one today. Been eating dewberries and wild raspberries for weeks now, but they're done now.
@swamp-yankee
@swamp-yankee 3 года назад
In my experience you don't have to limit sheep to get them to eat a palatable noxious weed. I have some perilla mint. The sheep generally graze a little bit of it right away and it's no issue, but sometimes a lamb will have a reaction, and it's face and ears will swell.

I could not always say that but it is not a temptation since I beat my sugar addiction.. I appreciate the side effects weight loss and no arthritis pain since cutting out sugar, the nightshade vegetables and gluten . Don't worry I am eating a ton of vegetables and loads of other stuff too. I wish I could make one of Mum's boiled dinners but they are not the same when you are not allowed to eat red meat. Chicken and fish just don't have what it takes to make a good boiled dinner. Yesterday I checked the lettuce and it's almost ready for another graze ! I looked at the stick label. In the other pot the lettuce variety John bought is pretty unusual 🙂🤷🏼‍♀️ swiss chard it is recovering too I knew it didn't taste like lettuce or look like any lettuce that I have eaten ROFLOL! This sort of Q came up on FB the other day and there were very mixed reviews-but also wasn't limited to llamas. Some folks had no problems with "alternative" guardian animals-like donkeys, but others had big problems. We're in Waterford Ireland, within driving distance from The Comeragh Mountains (come-err-ah) and the sheep that graze the mountains are manage-less. They roam the mountain doing what they want. Anyway, what I do notice a lot of is ferns, and then nettles and weeds and some thistles. Whatever sheep they are they do not eat weeds. The grass is so overgrazed it never gets any time to recover. Was walking imagining if those mountains were properly managed re grazing sheep and goats etc. how they would really look today. Pity. Such potential there; productivity potential, and beauty of mountain area potential.

Hi Greg, thanks for the insight into your way of farming. I feed hay to sheep here in the UK during winter. How do you think the bale unroller would work with sheep? Will it lay the hay down too thick or be too wasteful?What do you think please? Thanks for your thoughts.

What do you recommend for fencing off a paddock? Page wire perimeter fence with electric sections? Our farmland butts up to a gravel road with several homes. My worry in grazing our sheep and cattle on our hay acreage is the possibility of escapees. Would love to hear your thoughts?

Are llamas 🦙 or donkeys any good as a sheep 🐑 herd guardians? I wondered if they are effective, because dogs are expensive to feed.
