He is a highly educated man and he is also a musician. He spent most of his time producing and writing for other artists. He is an English professor also (early life). He had a couple other hits, but he mostly writes and produces. He is 69 years old now and still sounds just as beautiful. He looks very good for his age and evidently takes great care of his body. He cares a great deal about our people, Blacks and fights for our civil rights. He cares about the earth and all races actually.
"Shake You Down" is a phrase Abbott came up with that he thought expressed the way a man feels when he sees an attractive woman - "Girl, I want to shake you down." He tried the phrase out on a female friend and when she responded positively, it became the title for this song.
I listened to this song all the time! I didn't know he was married to Freda Payne! I love her song Band of Gold! I wish you would do a reaction video to it! It was a very popular song. One of my favorite!
He earned an estimated $4m in the states and £1m from his song. It was number 1 in the States and 6th in the UK's top ten. He earns a nice royalty bonus each year. Not a bad return for a one hit wonder.
Hi I can say Gregory Abbott has two other songs I would please like you to play first one is I Got The Feeling It's Over, and the other one is I'll Prove it too You. Thank you for playing his beautiful song.
Whenever I hear this song I feel like laughing because I had a friend who did an exaggerated impression of the "eeny meeny miney moe" part! It's a good song, I just have silly memories of it 😆
Gregory Abbott was Great for his one and only hit. I want to give you a gem of a reaction song. "I can't get over you." This hit is from the Dramatics. I GUARANTEE that you will be mesmerized with the song, voice, passion of an expression of LOVE. You see, this is how we did it back in the day. I feel so to have lived through the GREATEST Era of music known to mind.
And brains, too. He studied Psychology at UC Berkeley, writing at Stanford, and English Professor at UC Berkeley. Who could POSSIBLY concentrate, with all that hotness standing before you? So Ms. Freda Payne had quality taste in HER men!
Great song, haven't heard that in a long time. You're right too, how on earth did he not have other hit songs?? Incredible voice and soulful sound, love it.
similar artist/style to react to "You Are My Lady" by Freddie Jackson; "Piano In The Dark" by Brenda Russell: "Do What You Do" by Jermaine Jackson (Michsel Jackson's brother)
I was 29 when this song came out...I would sit in front of the TV drooling whenever this video played...boy, did this song get you in the mood...still does!
India, u carrying me back today. This song carries me back to some serious slow it down dancing and serious making out times. He was a smooth operator, lol. U know he was pulling u in with that voice. I don’t why he only had this one hit.
THAT !!!!!!!!!!! That RIGHT THERE !!!! India go back and watch your reaction............ That is EXACTLY how we felt when this came out ( I was around 20 ) and I STILL get those feels every time I hear this......... and to answer your question as to why was this his only hit... Honey, after this?!? We couldn't take no mo ! Shew lawd
Wow! I never knew he was married to Freda Payne, you should react to her song “ Band of Gold”. I also didn’t know that he was a teacher. I would have failed that class on purpose just so I could take it again. 🤣🤣🤣
Gregory Abbott is a musical anomaly because he is the only artist to have a number one album with no formal vocal training. What you hear is all talent. Plus as a professor, he studied the science of making a hit record before he released this album.
I love watching your reactions, you really draw us into the music and you don't interrupt the song while it plays as much as the other people that react. And your range of music is so good. I don't understand why some music videos would block you. Without you, people would have forgotten these songs. Many of the songs you've reacted to I've downloaded them on spotify. So if anything, the music companies should be paying you for putting their music back on the map again.
Firstly I want to say I think you are pretty cool and fun. I love your videos and I love hanging out with you and listening to music and watching you discover and sometimes I discover too. I wanted to say that we were all in love with Gregory Abbott back in the day, lol. Enjoy your journey, stay safe.
When my car’s clean and I just got paid. Out on a date with a beautiful creation of God, and I play this “panty-dropper”, it’s a done deal. Gregory getting pts. on the assist.
Classic 80s R&B at its finest, and it was totally up your alley...the man had you climbing walls like Spiderman...lol...I was a high school freshman when this song dominated all of radio, MTV and BET and VH1...and definitely a hot slow jam at our school dances too...and Gregory is STILL collecting checks from this ONE hit!!
Favourite reaction! You was feeling it just like we all did back then & still today..💖💝💕💃🏻🕺🏾The memories of this song, was Usually the last song at the end of the night at the club 👏🏽💥🥂🎤
Yeah, I remember this jam! This was wildly popular back in the eighties! I think there were just so many great R&B singers back then that he got lost in the shuffle!! But Gregory definitely had a great voice!
Hi again. Just watched as you heard Gregory Abbott, Shake you Down. You had me laughing so hard! I'm a 62 year old white woman. My youngest son's father was, God rest his soul, black. You took me back because as you see that child, now 32 years old, was conceived to that song. I bet there are many others who can make that statement. Thanks for the memories.
This was the song that made me truly love R&B. To this day, I still sing along with every line every time I hear it. It really does blow my mind that this was his only recognized hit.
Hi India I'm back on your channel. I believe Gregory Abbott should had gotten credit and hits with this song I'LL PROVE IT TO YOU. I like to say I Iove a your reaction to all the songs you play. My thumb up to you.
We sure thought it was sexy back in the day. 😊 I think I remember reading that he wrote this song, too. Never knew he was married to Freda Payne. Thanks for that little tidbit!
I was just singing this joint and decided to look it up on RU-vid… Your vid is the 1st one I clicked on SIMPLY for the reaction cause I knew you’d like it! 💯 See, back in these days, we absolutely loved everything that came on the radio. Times were different. Music was so different..
