I always felt sorry for Joe Dante. He released a decent werewolf movie with The Howling, only for John Landis to make the more successful American Werewolf in London the same year. He then made a brilliant horror comedy with Gremlins, which was overshadowed by Ghostbusters the same year. He then made a fairly decent movie about kid mistfits with Explorers, which was overshadowed by The Goonies the same year. He then goes on to make the excellent Innerspace, which was largely ignored as '87 had some amazing films such as Robocop, Princess Bride, Predator, The Lost Boys and Evil Dead 2. From then on, it felt like he gave up trying. It seems like Dante had such bad luck with his career.
@@aries4378 Definitely. I've always loved his style of film making, and his style of humour. It's interesting how his short film (and George Miller's) on The Twilight Zone movie completely shits on Landis' and Spielberg's sections from a great height, when they're supposed to be the more accomplished directors.
@@SirHilaryManfat In Landis' case, an extremely unfortunate situation on set halted the filming of his segment such that the editor had to Frankenstein together the existing footage into what we got. Spielberg's segment is just garbage.
the Fire Alarm is my favorite line of the movie "fire; the untamed element, the oldest of man's mysteries, giver of warmth , destroyer of forest. Right now this building is on fire! Yes the building is on fire!"
I've always assumed the employees clocked in and out with an old style time clock but everything else is so futuristic was due to Clamp wanting to appear futuristic but when you peel the curtain back it's just another building, or just another office. I always took the running line of "nothing ever works here" to support my theory; Clamp cares more about appearance than he cares about function.
Got to meet and talk with Zach Galligan recently. He kept talking about how innovative "Gremlins 2" was, how Rick Baker's animatronics were amazing and how certain pieces of technology had to be basically invented for the movie. He seemed really proud of this one.
Other things he mentioned: 1. Chris Columbus apparently wrote a "Gremlins 3" script, but if it gets made, probably won't be a Gremlins movie. It'll just be an unspecified Chris Columbus monster movie. 2. If there was a "Gremlins 3," he doesn't think Joe Dante would be able to direct it because he's in his 70's and movie studios prefer younger directors. (My rebuttal to this was George Miller, who came back to direct "Mad Max: Fury Road" for Warner Brothers in his 70's.) 3. His dream director for "Gremlins 3" is Edgar Wright. 4. One of his favorite movies of the last few years is "Sicario." 5. If there is a "Gremlins 3," he thinks Gizmo has to die in it, because of all the death, destruction, and chaos he's responsible for.
I was super excited as a kid for the Dungeons & Dragons film for some insane reason and the review’s headline in the paper was “Dudgeon Drags On” and reading that review killed a big portion of my childhood, really helped make me the bitter cynic I am today
I remember the film getting "cut/break" by the Gremlins in the theatre but how about when the VHS copy when it came out, they updated it so the VCR messed up the VHS tape. Such a playful film.
I'm going to defend the old school time clock. That kind of makes sense to me that they have expensive technology for the security, and everything else. But when it comes to their employees, and the stuff that guests in the building wouldn't see, they would cut corners.
sorry I'm just discovering RLM and all their wonderful reviews.. so i'm a bit late to the party.. but your comment is exactly what I thought when they went there. Yeah, it totally makes sense that they would totally cheap out on the time card system.
Saw it in theaters. It was hilarious when everyone started yelling at the projectionist and then the joke drops, everyone in the theater roared with laughter the parents, the kids, the grandparents. Even seeing this today reminds me of that night as a kid.
... and has 10 times more shit going in the movie than in the original. Do you remember how original was just a romantic comedy with Aussie badass? Do you remember how he fights a drug cartel in the sequel?
@Jackie Chan I did. And it doesn't change the fact it went from "Aussie hunter in New York trying to get a girl" to "Aussie hunter in the bush fighting drug cartel". The most "action" original had was the famous knife scene and it was played as a funny, rather than action scene
@@XXthekingofyouXX You need to familiarise yourself with more family-friendly films, my friend. And the point still sticks - rather than being a rom-com, it tries to be an action comedy
this nigga. deep cuts. Also no. Count Dooku also involved in cloning Orcs 1 internet point if you get this. For real this is the 3rd time Christopher Lee played a character involved in cloning.
Everyone wanted to go to NYC in the 80's for their sequels because it was crime-ridden and perfect for the scene of a mugger with a boombox and mohawk wearing leather to pull out a pocket knife and threaten our protagonist.
Elena Manetta don’t forget the cliche sex worker walking down the street in the background cat calling the protagonist haha 🐈 “hey baby you wanna a night you’ll never forget for 20 bucks”
When I was roughly about 5 or 6 there was a Gremlins ride at a WB themepark here in Australia. It essentially starts with you all in a cinema watching an old movie which then gets interrupted when the Gremlins ruin the film reel and you go on what is essentially like a ride out of the the cinema themed as an escape (at least that's what I remember). Looking back now, it probably would have been kind of awesome. Except for the fact I couldn't deal with Gremlins as a kid, I liked Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Aliens, but for some reason I just couldn't deal with Gremlins, they spooked the shit out of me. So naturally, my family decided to take me on this ride under the pretense of just going to watch a movie for the afternoon. That shit sticks with you.
Also for some reason Beetlejuice was your guide in helping your escape. A theme park in Germany has the same ride, except Alf is the guy who helps you escape for some reason
correct me if i am wrong , the cinema had Hulk Hogan , the vhs had John Wayne... tv version is hulk and i think they should use john wayne cos im still sat in my home not a cinema
@@SimonCheesewright Yeah, it was John Wayne. I watched that movie every single day the summer of 1996 because I didn't have a Blockbuster card, so I had to buy movies out of the cheapo bin and got this and Double Dragon.

This is such a sweet loveletter to Gremlins 2. *I never signed up for this wholesome content.*
One of my favorite Key & Peele bits was the one where they are in a board meeting pitching the idea for Gremlins 2. When it is put in a context like that, it sounds even more insane. I was rolling on the floor it was so funny.
Daffy Gremlin asking "is it safe" right before starting to drill Billy's teeth got the biggest laugh out of me in this movie. They frickin referenced Marathon Man, lol. Also, maybe Billy actually brought his dog to NYC, but abandoned him, and that's why the dog hangs out in front of his apartment eating trash. Maybe there was an entire sub-plot involving Billy's abuse towards his dog, but it had to be cut for time. That's how I'd like to imagine it anyway.
I'm surprised Mike missed out on the opportunity to mention Star Trek IV. An entire movie made just to have the crew go back in time and walk around an 80's city.
True story - when I saw this in the theater the film actually broke early in the movie. So, when that actually happens in the film, we were all so mad and then the finger puppet shadows showed up and we all lost it! It was like the ultimate trolling job! I still, to this day, love this movie and every insane thing in it!
True story: I was working in a theatre when G2 came out. The night before, after the second show ended, the projectionist ran the print of G2 (this would be a Thursday nite, as the release date was Friday) and we, the staff, hung out to watch because we all loved Gremlins. When that part with the break happened -- we almost all pooped ourselves. When the shadows came up, i turned to look at the projectionist booth window and he had a giant grin on his face.
I was 22 when this movie came out and I saw it in opening weekend. I was laughing so hard at it that my girlfriend at the time got angry with me because of how loud I was laughing and she felt I was drawing unneeded attention of the entire theater. I haven't seen this movie since then, but looking at the part with the beaker and words: Acid, don't throw in face. Just started me howling. It's was probably where one gag just built on another for me to the point where I would laugh at anything. My girlfriend really let me know of her displeasure with me at the part with Leonard Maltin where I just lost it at that point. I later realized the scene was pretty corny, but they threw so many gags one after another that I pretty much had difficulty thinking. What has kept me from watching it again is that later upon reflection of the movie I felt they just basically made a parody of the first movie and I felt it wasn't worth my time. Watching this review gives me a new appreciation for it so I'll probably look at it again.
Ok y’all so I just rewatched Gremlins 2, the best movie ever made. And something I never noticed is Clamp at one point, I cannot remember which scene for the life of me which one but I think its when he is on the tv trying to make the Chinese man sell his store, he mentions smokeless ashtrays. Which if you don’t remember is one of Billy’s dad inventions. So I wonder if Billy’s dad sold a bunch of patients to Clamp and that’s why some of the tech doesn’t work, and why Billy has a job there.
"A movie like it will never be made again." The Hangover 3 is the same kind of sequel. The director didn't want to make another Hangover movie, so he made a beat-for-beat copy of the original, but with the opposite tone, in a way that criticized the first movie, annoyed fans of the first two, and killed the franchise. The main difference is that the Hangover movies go from wacky to dark, while Gremlins goes from dark to wacky.
They actually do use the bird chirping sound effect in the original, in the Department Store scene where Stripe is getting pulled by the chainsaw and crashes into the wall
WB finally realized that RLM's audience are the movie geeks who still buys blurays for all the extra and belong to the one percent who listen to commentary tracks.
I’ve always loved Gremlins. It was my first introduction to horror. Gremlins 2 Is the perfect sequel. It’s more gremlins. I love it. “Batman” and “Batman Returns” / “Gremlins” and “Gremlins 2” very close to my heart. I felt like how you can’t trust technology and all this coldness and numbers. We don’t need to take it so far.
Just re-watched both movies (first time since I was young) and while I still love the mysticism flair and feeling-of-a-gone-era of the original, I *think* Gremlins 2 is now my favorite. That massive, non-stop mayhem of Gremlins attacking everyone around an hysterical Phoebe Cates is genuinely impressive, even by today standards. Plus, I do recall that a lot of people did fall for the reel-burning gag back then. That's the kind of "gotcha" moments you don't get that often anymore.
I like the idea of there being a shitty old card slot clock in machine. as someone who has worked in a McDonalds with "smart tech" for the customer occupies parts of the building, the employee parts were like falling to peices and our computer only had explorer and ran on vista and tiles fell into the fryers and shit. I wish they had gone further. I wish she walks into the employee lounge and there were like no floors and lawn chairs. Go all the way with it.
29:43 The film break scene always captured my interest. At the time I was reading the novelization and when this scene happens Brain Gremlin ties up the author and, briefly, takes over the book. Then, of course, the movie as released in theatres. BUT when Gremlins 2 came out on VHS that scene was different as well - where the gremlins take over the TV and switch around the channels. I believe the DVD restores that spot to how it was seen in the theatres (I kind of wish the VHS version was in the deleted scenes and not gone entirely). I was in middle school when this came out and it captured my imagination where depending on the media you were using, the scene changed. It's probably my favorite way of how they used multi-media.
@@christermyrberg3661 Nice. This must be a newer release. The original one I had, had zero extra features. Just the movie. I'll have to see if I can find it. PS - The John Wayne scene is the one from the VHS release.
@@BestowTV Yeah I know. My family had Gremlins 2 VHS a long time ago & when I saw it on DVD I was very confused with the Hulk Hogan scene as I had never seen it before 😃 I have the special edition of the first one including extras with the white cover that has Gizmo on it with a shadow of Stripe. The first one is from 2002 & the second one from 2006
We saw the movie the day it came out in theaters. That scene got us all. We're looking back to the projection booth to see what's going on. Then the Gremlin shadows come up and we all had a laugh. It was an interactive part of the movie and was really cool. I think I had the 02 version. I was mad because it's jus bare bones and basic (a lot of DVD releases were doing that then forcing you to rebuy them later when the do one that has added features). I may buy it on Blu-Ray, eventually. Honestly the Hulk version is my favorite. Like I said above I like that the part differs depending on the media and they put in that little extra effort on each.
@@BestowTV I would've loved to see it in theaters but I was born in 1988 so... 😆

Another Star Trek connection for Mike - puppeteer Kirk Thatcher did a bulk of gremlin voices in the film, most notably the female gremlin - Mike would remember Kirk as the punk on the bus in Star Trek IV that Spock uses his Vulcan nerve pinch on to silence his boombox
Oddly enough this movie is very divisive. I've always loved it. As I got older I appreciated it more and more realized just how batshit crazy and bold it is.
I went to this movie with friends, and as we were about to go in, the (usher? cinema employee?) reminded us of their refund policy if something happened with the film. That seemed a bit odd because they don't really talk about that. THEN the film breaks as part of the film and we were concerned at first and saying "well, we are certainly going to take advantage of that policy!" but then when it was revealed we all went OH, that is why she said that to us! so, that was a bit of fun from the theatre! I still remember that. And it made the movie that much more fun!
"Joe Dante is the Gremlin." - Mike. This should be on the bluray, cause it's such a hilarious way to look at it. It really takes balls to do something like this to a major studio movie.
I wonder if the only reason the gremlins were okay with talking to Grandpa Fred was because he was in the vampire makeup. Fred never takes it all off, he even meets Mr Clamp with it on.
I can't believe Jay didn't mention Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 as a sequel that's just taking the piss out of the first movie, especially since, like Gremlins 2, it was made by the original director.
I always thought the sequel resurrected the Futterman's too, until a recent rewatch when I realized that they are the ones who call the cops (and are mentioned and confirmed alive for a second time, thereafter) following the Kentucky Harvester scene when Billy is at the station.
@@rebeccaucich1290 That was my first guess. But, IF I remember right, it doesn't show up right after that. But also they each could have a couple of shirts I suppose. Who knows? I've resigned myself to never knowing for sure. Also, if there is a pocket on that side, it looks like a pen exploded.
RIP Mr Miller. I looked up his filmography after watching this (second time through...) and found out he was in more movies than I ever knew about, and also passed in 2019. Rest on you hopefully great dude!
Man I was really hoping there's talk about that scene that's in the movie that you can find in the VHS tape and DVD has two different scenes where one has Hulk Hogan and one has John Wayne
Yeah the Hulk Hogan was the original theatrical release. The one with John Wayne was the VHS release. Most Deluxe DVD or Blu Ray have options for both. I was hoping they'd mention it as well.
28:26 [pushes up nerd glasses]: In Gremlins 1, they used the cartoon chirping bird sound effect during the climactic fight when Stripe bangs his head against a wall. Edit: it's around minute # 94 in the film.
After watching this re:View, I gave Gremlins 2 a viewing for the first time in almost 20 years. I had completely forgotten about it, and it's a delight. I definitely didn't get the "Marathon Man" reference when I was 8 years old :) thank you for reintroducing me to a film I loved as a child.
This show is becoming more and more my fav that you guys make these days. It's really enjoyable to listen to you guys talk about movies in a more serious light. Also Gremlins 2 was and is a fantastic movie.
This movie has so much references and gags, it's almost like Airplane, every time you watch it you discover something new. The first one have that to in part, like the inventers convention scene but this one amps it up all the way through
