After all the craziness of space traveling and fighting titans and multiverses... I still come back to this scene for the pure simple joys of characterizations.

This is the very definition of a hero. Not being powerful, not winning, not prevailing at all cost. Protecting the others with your life and without hesitation. That is what a hero is.

a buddy of mine jumped on a grenade during the battle of fallujah in 2004-05, even with kevlar on it didn't save his life but saved a few of us in that room. i'm partially deaf now but thankful to be alive due to the bravery of my friend, The Real cpt america.

From diving on to a grenade to willing to face Thanos' entire army alone, tired, injured; this truly shows his characters.

There’s no greater love man has than to lay down his life for his friends. With this scene Steve just proved to everyone including those who thought that he was a joke that he would still give up his life to save theirs. Dr Erskine saw that and so did Peggy as she felt the same way.👍🏾

As a soldier who served overseas I am not nor have I ever been afraid to say that Steve Rogers is my HERO - the way ancient Greek soldiers maybe looked to Perseus or Achilles etc as their inspiration and/or hero.....To me the character of Steve Rogers embodies everything that we as soldiers should strive to be - selfless, relentless in serving the common good of the people we are here to defend - people who might not be able to help or defend themselves, to have self-control to the point of not even cursing (which is something we thought harmless but Rogers sees as a gateway to letting in evil), to be unwavering when it comes to his belief in UNCOMPROMISING GOODNESS. Cap always knew and still knows that when it comes to GOOD vs EVIL - that compromise is nothing to applaud. He's everything that I wanted to be as a child - Cap knew there was a time for everything, for peace, for talking and working things out - or for fighting. Thank God I was given the chance to emulate my hero and didn't squander it. And I'm still alive because my none of my brothers squandered that chance either. I love you guys - always. See you soon my brothers and sisters.

This is why they selected him. His straight up bravery.

The work they did to digitally alter him is absolutely unbelievable. I’d seriously believe they made a real super soldier serum before I even considered they could do that.

Everyone else: *Grenade look out!* Steve: No, I don't think I will.

General: “He’s still skinny” Me: “Then buy him lunch”

His instinct was to protect. Afraid but determined as he waited those long seconds before he would be ripped apart by that grenade. This was the most heroic, most selfless thing one could have done. No glory, probably not even a mention outside of some military files if that would have been a real grenade. And as we stand in awe for this scene in a movie... take a moment, only a moment... to know that there were such heroes - many, many of whom we never heard and never will hear - with such courage. And those that you do know of: remember them and tell their tales.

The way Peggy runs straight to the grenade, She is the best Captain after Steve.

Did anyone realize that Peggy also ran for the grenade? She’s pretty brave too.

This is my favorite scene out of the whole movie. It truly shows the kind of person Steve is, and it stuck with me years after I first watched the movie. Whenever brought up this movie, this the first scene I think of.

Steve Rogers is the buddy all of us need, but none of us deserves.

Here, we see, the exact moment where Peggy fell for Steve.

This is my favorite scene in entire MCU. It not only shows how Steve puts every one else above himself, even before gaining physical strength of the serum. He was a leader all along.... or better, A Captain.

A smart soldier runs for cover, when a grenade is thrown...but a BRAVE one happily puts their own safety at risk for the good of their company. That's what makes Capt. Rogers the best Avenger

Steve Rogers parents both died helping others: his father while he was serving in World War 1, and his mother after contracting tuberculosis as a nurse. A man of sacrifice. True soldier.

Anybody else notice that Peggy was also running toward the gernade

This is why Master Oogway rejected the mighty Tai Lung and selected the clumsy Panda as the Dragon Warrior because the panda had a pure soul.

This is why Steve was chosen.That self-sacrificing nature that no one else had.

The moment that proves Tony Stark wrong. The serum just made him strong, he was already a hero.

He didn't hesitate for 1 seconds to sacrifice himself to save others. Captain America is truly the most noble Avenger.

This is what Marvel used to be. They focused on character development and told us why characters DESERVED their powers. We see it here, we saw it with Tony Stark, we saw it with Thor when they took away his power.

"Everything special about you came out of a bottle" No, he got the bottle BECAUSE he was special.

"The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse." This scene is what made him Captain America.

Someone who is left out and feels useless will be the most dedicated and willing to prove his worth. As the doctor says earlier to Steve, someone who never has had power or privilege will understand the importance of it. They won't abuse or take it for granted. Someone who relates to being on rock bottom will appreciate and utilize power to help others when they are on top. Because they understand what it's like. That was the key message of this movie.

This is Captain America. It wasn't the Infinity Formula or the rank, it was his dedication to saving people, even before he had the Superpowers to do so. It's why Erksine chose him. He knew that Steve didn't need the formula to become a hero, he already was one. He was the one who could prove most trustworthy with the powers he could give

I never realised before this that Peggy also ran towards the grenade. What a power couple

If there was ever a scene that stuck with me as something perfectly establishing a character's bravery and commitment to others in under ten seconds of action, this was it. Brilliantly fine, and nobody having to explain why it was a heroic action, just reaction shots from this around him.

Imagine if that was a real grenade. That general would basically doom the whole universe.

We just need to remember, Steve can do it all day. Absolutely great scene, set the tone for his character even before he was Captain America.

Screenwriting lesson. So simple, so complex, so effective at SHOWING over telling.

Fun fact: 0:36 Peggy is actually worthy too. She doesn't know it was a fake grenade indicating that she is willing to make a sacrifice.

In this scene Rogers demonstrates is willingness to put the safety of others above one's own and in fact sacrifice oneself if need be; in the flag pole scene he demonstrates the use of unusual problem-solving intelligence. All he needed was the packaging to express those qualities.

No amount of muscle, brain or practice can teach courage..Its builtin !!

And then people still say Cap is only a hero through that serum

Somehow this scene made my eyes watery. When I was in college, I got into a fight where I was severely beat by 15+ guys, I had 7 or 8 of my college friends with me that were always bragging about how tough they are, they were taller and stronger than me, none of them stood up for me, some ran away, some just watched me taking a beating. But, there was that short skinny new guy that barely knew me. As soon as he saw me on the ground eating dust and bleeding, he rushed to me and covered my head up to defend against further kicks and punches. Zero hesitation. Of course, he got his ass handed to him just like I got mine. But from then on, he became my best friend and my real life Captain America.

Plot Twist: he just wants to free himself from suffering

Tony Stark to Steve in "Avengers": Everything that's special about you came out of a bottle. Everyone that remembered this scene: Are you sure?

When he dived to protect everyone from the grenade was the moment he was truly a superhero.

This is why cap can lift Thor's hammer. He is worthy manzzzzzz

This scene alone shuts down the people who argue that "the serum made him worthy".

From fighting a bully in the alley, to diving head first into a grenade, all the way to facing the entire army of Thanos alone, Steve earned his rest in the MCU. But he still could do this all day!

in his first movie Cap put his body in front of a grenade, and in his last, he put it in front of Thanos' army. He never changed. MCU did a hell of a job in creating this character.

The doctor is really underrated, he was the light that shed path to Steve in becoming Captain America by accidentally overhearing Steve talking to Buck in becoming a Soldier sacrifice for the army. I was sad af when i watch this movie that the Doctor got shot. :( “Not a perfect soldier but a good man”

Everyone talking about Steve in this scene, but let’s take a moment to appreciate Tommy Lee Jones and his flawless acting in this movie. Like, how can you be that serious, never crack a smile, and still have my stomach hurting from laughing bro? “Look at him! He’s making me cry” 😂

I used to watch this movie multiple times on Disney+ and this is still one of the best Phase 1 films ever made besides Iron Man and Avengers 1.

Out of all the Marvel movies this one still takes it for me.

I had really high hopes for a Captain America movie. And Marvel just knocks it out of the park, First Avenger and Avengers are my favorites with Guardians of the Galaxy right behind. I've seen most all Marvel movies, it's all pretty awesome. Long live the MCU.

A truly underrated scene. Steve wasn’t the strongest or healthiest BUT for a trainee ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of his fellow cadets, one who made his training a living hell. That makes Steve the most courageous and noble characters in the entire MCU

This scene really set the tone of how Steve Rogers was ready to give everything he had for the war effort at a moments notice. Truly a display of valor and self sacrifice.
