I went into my guitar shop looking for a les paul style guitar... The guy there asked if I ever played a Gretsch, handed me this guitar and I bought it straight away. Ive had it over a year and I play everything on it. From Tool to Metallica to Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine. Its an awesome guitar. Can't recommend it highly enough and the colour just makes it recognisable straight away to everyone.
Same here.. Today i was looking for a Les Paul Standard, tried 4 of the and no one was in my opinion the 2400+ swissfrancs worth.. Played the Gretsch 5 minutes and the magic happend..
@@milotin2755 sorry mate , I'm not really into thrash metal so I don't play it. Don't want to give you any false info . Any chance you could try it out at your local shop? If you have the right amp and pedals I'm guessing any guitar can play thrash. But I think this is more suited to rock .... Hardest I've tried to play is Slipknot I guess off the top of my head , I have other guitars with emgs or Seymour Duncan pickups to use if it didn't sound right on the Gretsch. It's a nice guitar to play , bit heavier in weight like a Les Paul. Hope that helps
I got this back in may..it plays and feels like it should have cost double the price. It needed no set up. Action intonation spot on. Nice frets no sharp ends.. was going to change the pickups but there was no need.. it’s a stunning guitar and even though I have some more expensive guitars this is my go to. If you’re on the fence just go buy one.. you won’t regret it
I just ordered one , I am SO SURE there'll be no regret about buying this instrument. Thanks for your input on this particular guitar, convinces me all the more that I made a great decision to get one. Peace buddy 👍👍👍☮☮☮
I love the clean look of the guitar... that beautiful maple and just the crescent inlays on the edge of the fretboard. Gives a good variety of tones too. Class act, Gretsch.
First AC/DC song I'd play is 'High Voltage' as that's the song which really made them big time in Australia and the rest, is as they say, history. Rick Parfitt of Status Quo is right up there with Malcolm as the greatest rock rhythm guitarists.
I've got one of these and gone complete Malcolm Young mode and taken the neck pickup out and had the middle pickup routed out, the finish dulled, and put bolts in the holes where the pots were. I fucking love it, it's great because it's like a Malcolm replica for less than £1000.
The dirty tones were exactly what I was expecting, but I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by the clean tones, fell in love with the middle position one, that's absolutely gorgeous AND idiosyncratic sounding too!!!! Great video, thanks!
Even if you're not an AC/DC fan (which I am) you have to admit this axe is badass. Hope Malcom is having a good time with Eddie up there. For those who are about to rock... To answer you question Dagan the rift I would most want to play on that is the Hells Bells intro rift.
Gretsch wasn't on my radar. I was down at Guitar Center checking out some player teles and epiphone les pauls when one of these caught my eye. I played it for about an hour. I might buy one, I really liked.
I bought one of these but with the Bigsby (used $300 U.S.). I wasn't happy about the "famous Filter 'tron tone"......until I removed the Bigs and installed a trapeze tailpiece. Now she's good.
I love mine. Your comment about the middle position using a clean amp is so true. I find I can get early George Harrison sounds with that combo. Sweet and ringing. I put 12s on mine with a wound G string (needed a slight truss adjustment to handle the higher tension, as you would expect). Now it is a tone beast!! Love it for Highway to Hell, Rock or Bust, and Shake a Leg!
These are so good. I got mine this summer and am absolutely smitten with it. These pickups have a “raspiness” to them that I can’t get anywhere else. That’s that gnarl Dagan mentioned. Having issues finding a hard case though.
I purchases when it first came out. I said YES! A Malcolm type looking Gretsch without paying the 3K$$. Neck is like a Les Paul. Nice weight, I love pickups best of all. Clean very chimey like a bell, Add gain, and its some dirty greasy distortion. The first riff i played.....LIVE WIRE
F-in-ay! They finally did it! Been looking 4 THIS Gretsch DoubleCut 4-Ever..! Looks sweet in vintage natural! A few years ago when Gretsch released the Malcolm Young Signature I could Not bring myself to buy it! Too many frickin’ holes in a brand new guitar, especially at that high a price!, so... Skipped, & wrote Gretsch off! What the Heck were they thinking? Now after like 12 various guitar models & a decade or so later, they done it right! Soon this Double Cut Rock Machine shall be MINE! AH-Ha-hah-hah-hah! Thanks Dagan! U Rockzzzz!
Amazing guitars and would be a good buy at double the price. Obviously AC/DC is second nature on it, but I've been using it on clean/crunch too for Neil Finn / Crowded House stuff, at which it also excels. I loved my natural one so much I went back and bought the wine red (Confusingly called walnut stain!) as well. One of the best buys out there in sub £500 guitars.
I went into Guitar Center to pick up some strings, they had a GC Exclusive Jet on the wall in seafoam green. One step above this model I think, with the Blacktop Filtertrons and a trapeze tailpiece. Pulled it off the wall just for kicks, fell in love with it immediately despite the fact it was a damaged floor model. The bonehead on the floor refused to cut me a deal on it, because it was already on sale and he didn't have authority to discount the damaged floor model. Long story short, I raised a stink, and now a month later it's sitting in my music room, damage and all, discounted from the initial sale price, and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's fast becoming one of my favorite guitars, and sounds so different from the slew of Les Pauls and Teles I have.
Hi Dagan, I could listen to you rock out all day long. I hope whatever band you play with allow you to go mad when you want. Where can I buy tickets? ..... 🙂
Just ordered on of these, and your review among others convinced me I need one in my life. Can't wait to get my grubby mitts on it! Many thanks Dagan, Rock hard always dude :) 👍👍👍☮☮☮🤘🤘🤘 PS: I would play AC/DC Shes got balls as it's virgin tune, not only because I'm a born again beginner, but also because as simple as the song is to play, it effing reaks of classic AC/DC killer tunes.
Yeah, I have one too. Amazing guitar and sound. Of course there is more than only ac dc riffs. With this stuff u can play blues, classic rock, Jazz and so. Need just to find the right eq and you obtain versatility
I love Gretsch guitars. They are usually totally bad-a$$, And it looks like this one is no different. Killer guitar. Malcom was the man. I might have to put this one on my maybe list.
First thing I did was Jailbreak. I'm gonna put a TV Jones classic in the bridge and yank the neck pickup toggle and neck pickup volume control. It's then a one trick pony but that's the whole point for me. Can't figure out what Malcolm used to plug the holes tho...
Sounds great. Just checked the website, seems like they don't have one in Cardiff. I'd play live wire first. As that was the first song I saw Acdc play live!!
First thing I played on mine was Back In Black…. \m/ The stock pickups to me were more humbucker than FilterTron, so I replaced mine with a TV Jones ClassicTron and PowerTron. This thing snarls like a dog, but back off the volume and you get singing cleans.
@@karlbjornsson9090 yes. With similar rings from TV Jones as well. I’d also recommend changing the pots… to CTS Audio Taper 500k pots. The stock pots seem to be either on or off, there’s no smooth roll off on the volume or tone.
QUESTION: What's the difference between the Gretsch G5222 and G5220, if any, hardware wise? One's a single cut the other is a double but is that the only difference?
G5222 has the newer broadtron pickups. I played the g5220, found it a bit heavier, it's single cut, and it's slightly darker pickups. It could just be me. The g5222, I don't play it before buying it (lockdown), I'm glad I bought it blind buy. Perfectly set up, I've never bought a guitar that didn't need setting up. G5222 out of the box, perfect. Just needed a bit of lemon oil on the fretboard and new 10s strings. Pickups were dusty, quick wipe down with a brush and it was 👌🏼. To be honest, it's very easy and fun to play with the g5222, it could be because of the shape. Bluesy bends past the 15th frets are easier, compared to a Les Paul style guitar. Trust me, you will love the double cut. For the price, which has gone up in price since I bought it, is worth every penny. In fact, more. I've bought a strat for the same price, and the quality of gretsch is unbeatable. Fender owns Gretsch, but the quality control service is on par, actually better, compared with Fender higher end Mexican squier/ American fenders. Hope I've helped.
I haven't learned to play a guitar but want to and I though the sg 61 and prs 722 sounded good, but I doooooooo like this as to what I would play could only be acdc, would be, let me put my love in to you, & a whole lotta Rosie.
Basically if you want to sound acdc , its this or the sg. But in a nutshell any 24.75 guitar scale lenght and humbucker at the bridge will do. Or a telecaster, never can go wrong with a tele.
Could be sacrilegious for hardcore Gretsch fans, but are the broadtron pickups the same size as any ordinary PAF humbucker pickup? Thinking of changing out the broadtrons into a humbucker set not in the "tron" family.
just made an impulse buy on a used one on Reverb... natural color, because I was drinking and listening to acdc razors edge 😁 the first song I'll play is "Got you by the balls"
i got the walnut one (not from your shop) but i am not sure about the electronics. When I turn OFF the volume pots, the guitar makes a buzzing noise when not touching the strings or pots. Is this normal? Pots are OFF / zero!
I love Gretsch guitars , and I appreciate ACDC, but can Malcolm, with all due respect, be the best rhythm guitarist when he played the same song for 40-some years?
