Props to Ellen for making Meredith such a complex emotional character. Meredith is by far the most challenging character in the series. Even in her impulsive and self destructive choices, the audience feels for her and understands where she is coming from.

I love how Derek knows that Cristina is the person Meredith needs to see. This show is so incredibly brilliant. The writing, directing, producing, acting are just all so tremendous.

One of the best scenes ever in Greys history. We weren't meant to hear the conversation between Mer and Christina in the car. It illustrates that they have a connection that no one else understands- they get each other. It was a turning point for Derek; instead of fighting the relationship between Mer and Christina, he embraced it. Truly touching scene- excellent acting. Great guest arc from Eric Stoltz. It's not easy to feel sympathy for the devil but he brought a human element to the character. Excellently written.

One of the most heartbreaking episodes

I love Meredith's character. She keeps doing crazy things, she doesn't even understand why, but in a brave and self-sacrificing way. I respect her for doing this for this man.

To be a doctor and watch that must be incredibly painful. You fight so hard to save lives everyday, and then to watch a life be taken away just like that is heart-wrenching, even if the person dying is a criminal.

Derek is soo sweet..he understands meredith even if he hated that serial-killer and he takes her to christina's place to make her feel better. What a man *_*

On Grey's there are moments that as soon as i see them, i know that they are making history and this was one of them. When i watched this when it came out i knew it would be one of my favorite moments on the show ever and it's been 6 years and it still affects me.

I love this scene. So powerful, how beyond what he did, she can see him as a human. He was scared and she was there to be there for him “ show compassion” .. when he turn and saw her sitting there.. oh God my heart.

This show really has some of the best crying scenes ever. Many other crying scenes from other shows or just not as good actors in the same show, just get tears in their eyes and that's it. Not really acted emotionally or anything. But Grey's always makes sure it's emotional.

When I first saw this scene, I was shaking so much because of my crying! Then, my sister walked in on me crying and all she said was, “You watched William’s execution, didn’t you?” I said yes and she started crying too. 😭💔

I remember the first time I saw this scene I was on my couch I couldn't stop crying (and i'm really not a crying baby) this is really a touching scene :( I love grey's anatomy so much!

Eric Stoltz was snubbed of an Emmy. His performance was fantastic.

Goodness, Dempsey manages to convey like, every emotion with a look. They're both such great actors.

There are no words to desribe this scene. It is absolute perfection and truly sums up the power of this series. The acting is incredible and the music gives me goosebumps all the time. My favourite scene in Grey's anatomy, Shonda Rhimes is truly a genius!

Back when Grey's story arcs were gold. I miss these arcs. I hope Grey will find its groove back 😭

Can't forget this scene which made me cry. I feel the same way towards the prisoner just like what she did. Very touching that you'll feel sympathy to those people whom you don't expect to feel emotional. Meredith's brave on this one.

@nancydrewgirl911 The dialogue of the lemons is a key piece to understand that. When William says that before he dies, you know that he wasn't playing her. And deep down Mer did know that, that he only was scared.

This episode made me love Meredith for ever !!!

I started watching Greys in season 3 and related to her a lot and and especially in season 4 when she started to go to therapy, but this is the moment I fell in love with her. The level of compassion here is superb. Meredith is #goals. And she's pretty and gorgeous and a fighter. I want to be just like her when I grow up. Props to Shonda.

Amongst the strongest of episodes in grey's I respect Shonda for this because its not easy to do DR in a correct way even the guys who did the game prison architect admitted its really hard to do it correctly

I don't mind what it touched me the most... The violence of the execution scene or the acting of Ellen crying of a deep compation. What's sure is that scene still makes me reflecting two day after seeing it on TV...

I used to see things in black and white when I was a kid, and I hated it when people doing the cruel things. But the more I grow up, the more I don’t know what is right or wrong anymore. And at some point in my life, I realized I even had compassion for evil people, and that shocked me to the core. I even think of myself as a hypocrite and some kind of evil just like them. This scene touched me when I watched it 5 years ago, and I had cried for days. It never gets old for me.

Heartbroken! This was hard to watch, the execution part almost killed me. I understand wanting to show compassion and I understand making a mistake that could cost you your life. I have no words, only tears right now. Heaven on earth...wow!

i have never cried so much over an episode and its this scene (and the one where the mother is saying goodbye to her dying son) that gets me everytime. I cry so so hard haah

Ive never watched/follwed Grey's anatomy, and i didnt watch this video, but i did read the comments and now i want to watch the series just to experience this scene (which i still not spoiled for me!!) because it seemingly hit a lot of you pretty deeply :P

I cry so hard during this scene. I cry for William. I cry for Jackson. I cry for Meredith. This is just a heartbreaking episode overall.

the best thing about those two episodes this criminal and all what got to me was just few scenes that got me first whenever that guy used to say to that whatever helps you sleep at night doctor grey and when he offered his organs to that kid it was awesome!

So many things. Him not agreeing with her but STILL showing up for her. Knowing what she needed and providing it. Cristina being there and them just being Mertina.. wow. This is why I have so much difficulty watching it past the point where Patrick and Sandra leave.

Many years and many seasons later when I come up on this episode binge watching, this scene makes me bawl everytime

I didn't cry in this scene, but I did feel overwhelmed. The murderer did deserve it, he deserved to die in the end. It's the simple Karma, nothing can stop this natural phenomenon. But it was overwhelming to see how it affected Meredith and Derek in two different ways. I'm glad they didn't use this event to break up the relationship though, that would've been awful. I was so happy to see that these two had matured above that. It was definitely a sad scene though.

There is just so much depth to what this episode and the characters hold. Ellen Pompeo is truly amazing.

And while you're going on and on about how the death penalty is a sin, killing people and taking a life is a sin, what do you have to say to people killing INNOCENT people? When a mother is killed, when a pretty innocent young girl is raped and killed, i wonder if you have ever taken that into perspective for once.. A LIFE IS A LIFE after all, like you said. That is WAY WORSE than a (quick and relatively painless) CRIMINAL execution.

ONE OF THE BEST SCENES OF THE WHOLE SERIES! Wonderfuly performed by all ! So VERY touching and profound!

I know this guy was a killer but I cry hard every time I see this episode. You can tell he was severely mentally ill which is no excuse by any means, but that’s still a human being that had only one person at his execution that was there *for him.* Bless Meredith’s heart, she truly is a good person. The way she said “it was horrible” is heartbreaking.
