When people say “it’s just a dog” or “just a cat”, I feel sorry for them. They’ve obviously never experienced the deep, essential love of a beloved animal companion. With great love and joy comes great grief too. As you say, these are legitimate emotions to feel, and the impact of the loss can be profound.

I don't feel sorry for them. I see them as kinda callous and not capable of loving animals and I pray they won't ever get one for the sake of the dog, cat, and any other pet.

@WHATEVER GOES FOR ME You know it's funny, but I've personally known two people who couldn't stand cats. In both instances, cats chose each of them and boy what an attitude adjustment. However, it's probably not typical, and, as you mentioned, I hope anyone incapable of loving an animal never gets one.
@whatevergoesforme5129
@whatevergoesforme5129 Год назад
@@rouxchat6033 There are some people who think they don't like a cat or a dog until they were kinda forced to adopt one and eventually became good pet carers. However, there are many who couldn't care less like some people I know (neighbors) and they actually have dogs or cats but the humans neglect and abuse their dogs/cats. Some of them got a dog just to have a guard for their house while some got a cat to catch mice/rats but when these animals got sick, the owners did not give them the care the animals badly needed. My blood boils whenever I see this because these humans let their pets die (or even kill them) and also abandon them by dropping the kittens elsewhere or no longer letting their dogs inside their residences. Right now, I am feeding these neglected cats and dogs (who are roaming our streets) even though my family has already 7 dogs and 4 cats.

so true, it feels so disabling and reduces my life experience to a deep hollow heaviness in the heart and solar plexus. Nothing relieves the ache and when I forget about it for a half hour or so suddenly I let out these screams of horror for the inability to feel the fur, touch the paws and enjoy the soft fur of my young cat Itty who I found ravaged in my garden after going missing for 4 days. I have lost quite a few animals over the years but this one is the worst of all, cuts way deep into my guts and I have to wail out the pain in ungodly wrenching sounds.

I agree it doesn't get easier, but it is something we have to accept as part of the bargain we make for the love and companionship of our pets. I try to give my pets, usually rescues, a good life so that I feel they've gotten something from me in their shorter lives. This was especially true when I took in guinea pigs for 20 years. @@meloearth I don't know about tsescoe or jamminjoe44 or judithgee7011, but I know how I feel about the loss of my dog 8 months ago. I still have breathing difficulty at times. Some days are better. The pain is bone-deep. I've been taking the dopamine-serotonin combo pill I ordered on Amazon. I also ordered some oxygen canisters to help with breathing. I don't notice much difference. I am not sure if it's helping me or not. At least, my symptoms are not getting worse. This is coming from a guy who had been in good health. For the first 3 months, it was really hard for me - the deep sense of hopelessness and despair was simply overwhelming and debilitating. One ray of hope for me is that I had the foresight to preserve her genetic information to bring her back in the future. I sent away her tissue samples immediately after my dog's death, to a gene bank to freeze them until needed. It cost me $1600. I know I will see my dog again, but it's still hard even after 8 months. Maybe my depression improved 5% compared to 8 months ago. It's a long hard road until I see my beloved dog again.

It takes time. I lost my last dog 10 years ago in April. It is only in the last few months when I have even begun to entertain the possibility of getting another dog. It's not time in my life to do it yet, but at least I am open in my heart to that possibility now. I feel so guilty that I took her to our local vet and she died in their care and they were so heartless with her. I keep remembering our last car ride and how excited she was, and now she’s gone. I still cry for her most nights, she used to sleep with me. I am childless and she was truly my baby. She gave me so much love and affection I felt so blessed and loved. It pains my heart that most people can’t understand the depth of loss and grief I carry for my baby. I absolutely love dogs, they are heaven sent but I can’t fathom getting another dog because of the heartbreak that will come and I feel like I’m betraying Pumpkin. People can't understand why I am not into taking pics or looking at them. I don't really like looking at pics where a loved one, human or pet, is no longer with us because I relive the pain of their passing every time I look at the pics. I'd rather not think of them because when I remember a pet that passed away, even though it has been decades already, I still feel down and especially if that pet was someone who was so special because even though we should not play favorites, there are always this dog or cat that has a special charm just like Murrray.

I’m retired military and retired federal wildlife officer….throughout almost 5 decades, I was responsible for leading, supervising, managing people. I always made it a point, to get to KNOW, those that I had responsibility -organizationally speaking-for. I tried to know them as men and women, versus “assets”. That required knowing something of their backgrounds, their interests…and of course their personal lives. I always knew, when those men and women had close bonds with animals…indeed those that did, were some of the best men and women I had the pleasure of knowing and working with. I always treated loss of a dog, cat…even horses….once I knew of the animal’s passing…I treated it “seriously”. In my line of works, both military and law enforcement…if their hearts and minds weren’t in the game, it put those of us that worked with them, and the public in some instances, at risk. I always allowed them whatever time they needed to rebound. Sometimes, that meant “time on the beach” (yep, I’m Navy), time in the office, or just time to themselves. Also, while in some cases, I think that I did, I tried hard NOT to say “I know how you feel”…rather saying “that makes me sad, too….take whatever time you need”. I never felt that anyone abused that….and I always felt that my people had my back, just as I watched out for their “six”. Good reminder, Doc….to feel for those around us.

When I lost my first horse, years ago, I was absolutely devastated. I called in 'sick' the following day, and when my 'stand-in' boss pressed a bit harder, I had to tell him I had had my horse euthanized, and needed a day or two to collect myself, at least. He wouldn't let me take it, so I went into work and was an emotional mess for several days. It was horrible. When my regular boss got back from his vacation, and I told him what had happened, he said HE'D had given me the day off, or however many I needed, and done my courier route for me. Now THAT'S a good boss, right there. I've never forgotten the kindness and compassion of the man. His 'stand-in' always was a bit of a jerk....!!!

I think the most comforting part of losing a pet is knowing that I made sure they had a fantastic life. To know that I did my very best and that I have lots of good memories of them. Then, as sad as it is, I know my pet had a great life and that is , in itself reassuring.

My dog has been living at my uncles place on his farm, i went out to visit him the other day and he was such a sweetheart, tail wagging, tongue lolling, he was quite literally jumping with joy to see me and I just got a text message that he died in his sleep. Almost no warning signs other than a bit of an upset tummy for just over a day. I haven't stopped crying all day and I dont think im going to feel better for a while. He was buried with his favourite blanket in the field, after a life full of sleeping on leather couches and kisses. His fur didn't even have a chance to turn grey yet. I am a retired tough skinned nurseryman from England. I have never found losing any of my dogs easy. I lost my mother about 10 years ago, which was sad but she was old and crackers to be frank. It was nothing compared to the utter devastation on having my last old Jack Russell (I always have three on the go) put to sleep…..the pain was utterly crippling…..I have two other old ones now (featured with on the Plantsmans corner channel) who’s time is coming and I dread it. However, confessing the pain of losing the dog was worse than losing my mother is somewhat embarrassing, and I know most folk will see it as disrespectful or cold. But it’s the truth and the pain is so different because of the trust they have in you that you can make everything right for them. You see it in their eyes, love, faith, and trust. It is so utterly heart-wrenching. Thank you for your channel and advice. Best wishes from the UK……Malcolm

I recently lost my cat Beau. He was only ten, but cancer of the tongue is very quick. I did not have much time to get used to the idea that it was fatal before he was gone. He was my constant companion, followed me like a dog, came when I called him. He was one of those super intelligent cats who understood so many words and sentences. I loved him. I found the feeling thankful for the time that we had together and for the fact that we found each other at all was the best medicine for me. Remembering all of our good times together oh, how funny he looked sleeping on his back all the time. His beautiful blue eyes. He slept on me and next to me every single night. Fortunately I took a great many wonderful pictures of him. I will love him forever. He is not the first cat that I have loved and lost. But, this time it hurts more than it ever has. I think it's because we had an extra special connection.

I am very sorry, dear Erin, your Miles will forever be in your hear, with your love and the memories you shared. Your comment made me realize that we are similar. For me, losing a pet is way more intense than losing a loved one. The bond is incredibly strong and deep, and it can't be explained with words. With humans, you have words to communicate with, to let them know that you care, that you get what they are going through and when the final time comes, words have already been shared, or at least there is nothing incomprehensible going on. With pets, you can't talk about the future, you can't talk about diseases or procedures, with pets the most important thing is the present. And if you're not there when they need you, nothing else matters. I completely understand why you skipped the celebrations, especially if the people around do not take your grieving seriously, which is very immature and definitely not empathetic. Please, take your time to grieve and do not feel pressured to "make it happen fast" or feel invalidated, because you have every right to feel like you're feeling. Take care of yourself, I wish you all the best

After 6 mos, I was allowed to keep 2; Scowt & Clovis On Nov. 21, 2022, the stronger suddenly had heart attack. December 2, had to euthanize Clovis. She was already declining, but after Scowt's sudden & violent loss, Clovis went out searching, waiting, laying her timid self to wide open world , but no Scowt. Dec. 2, she could barely lift her head. Vet gave sedative & left room, but suddenly, Clovis reared up yowling, blue eyes rolling & turning brown; frantically clawing at- & chomping into canvas kennel. I was paralyzed. I had been about to embrace her & try to say Love you, thank you, God be with you & take my baby to heaven. Had I not just raised up to settle her after injection of prep sedative, she would have ripped my face & bitten me (inadvertantly, of course), so violent was the HELL that ensued. My thought was immediately of something being burned alive. So much for alleviating misery. I am tormented day & night. I am devastated. Still. And furious at whatever went wrong, which vet did not see & called "twitching." She was so tender, so weak, clinging to life just to love. Her end was hideous. Sometimes I am sure I will die of this grief.

We lost our family dog, Rimshot, a few months ago. We got him just before I found out we were pregnant with our first child. I did home births with all 3 of my children and he was in the house for each one, so my kids met him within the first few hours of being born. He was their stool, mess cleaner, watch dog, cuddle bug, and so much more. I have a video of my oldest "fixing" Rimshot...he was using his toy drill and saw on him and he was just laying there letting him. He played dress up with my daughter and snuck into food with my youngest. The other day, while on a drive, my youngest, who is 4, said, "I'm hugging Rimshot because I'm hugging myself and he lives in my heart."

I’ve had the privilege of having dogs in my life since being a young girl. Each one was so very special to me and when they passed, they took a piece of my heart with them. My Lab, Kody, passed away three years ago and it took me that long to open up my broken heart again to another dog who desperately needed a home and love. The grief from our pets’ passing is very real and anyone who doesn’t understand this has never been loved unconditionally by a creature who thinks you are his whole world.

I feel the same. First time it took me more then 15 years to have another puppy! I’ve just lost my baby last December again. She was only 7 years old! Heart problem, liver problem and kidneys of the result of early sterilization at 7 months old and because of parasites preventive drugs control and other mistakes done by the vet recommendations! Now I hate myself and cannot forgive but it’s too late! I wished I would meet back of that days, honest and professional veterinarian like this one...

I've lost my cat a week ago, and the pain is real. I miss her terribly. She was not "just a cat" for me; she was the first pet I called mine; she was the daughter I haven't had; she was my center. It was painful to let her go but the pain she was in was visible and had become more and more a real part of her day. We have decided to euthanize her, and seeing her lifeless body on her pillow was so hard. We, pet owners, have to go through this pain in our lives, and letting our beloved pet go is not something minor. We need to be strong. I miss my cat everyday. It's been sad; I know this feeling will get better as time goes, but still hurts.

Yeah, I lost my cat last year in May at the age of 10. He was always very healthy then all of a sudden he started having diarrhea. After a few months of me and the vet trying to figure out what is going on, he started going downhill fast and lost a lot of weight. Already a thin cat and got even thinner. They finally realized that he probably had cancer cause he was going down hill so fast. I thought I would have my Spencer for many many years cause he was my healthy cat that never needed to go to the vet. All of his check ups were always good. But goes to show that you never know how quickly bad health can creep up on you. He was my baby that I will always miss.

I've shared my life with, and lost many dogs over the years. I've also lost a 13 year old child, and although there's no grief or pain to ever equal the loss of a child(10 years later and it's still as raw as the day it happened)the closest thing to that has been the loss of my dog beautiful pit/lab mix Riley,,14 months ago. I can't seem to get past it. She was without a doubt the best dog I ever had, sweet, kind, sensitive. She was there for me when I lost my son. Her fur soaked up many tears lol I feel stupid bc "it's just a dog" and "how can you compare the death of a dog to the death of your son" .........I know. What helps is learning to live WITH the grief, but still have a happy, healthy life. It's not easy, and I'm not there yet when it comes to Riley. But,it's the ONLY way I was able to live with losing my son. I compartmentalize the pain, bring it out sometimes when i need to,cry, then put it back......I'll get there with my beautiful Riley too❤️

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss of Murray. I lost my dog recently and I hardly go a day without crying. I miss her so much. She was always so healthy and we took a lot of pointers from you. We noticed she wasn’t eating her kibble, but she was still eating the home cooked food we prepared for her. My husband took her to the vet and the vet said she had a loose tooth. We were very surprised because her teeth had always been in good condition. She had it removed and they discovered a mass in the roof of her mouth. They said it was so fast growing that it wasn’t detectable when they found the loose tooth…just a few days earlier. After the surgery, she wouldn’t eat at all. She continued to drink water but nothing else. We even took her to a large university veterinary hospital and they said there was nothing they could do. She had oral melanoma and only lasted 17 days. I really don’t know how she lasted as long as she did without eating, but I guess it was because she was so healthy before the cancer. I am so sad and I am having a difficult time with her death. We had taken such good care of her and it’s so hard to accept. Thank you for addressing the grief we feel in losing our pets.

My beautiful Belgian Sheepdog, Beau, was a rescue dog that I adopted from a local animal shelter. He was an amazing, loving, loyal, and smart dog. He developed a nasal cancer just over a year ago. The cancer spread to the lymph node in his neck and became a large tumor. It became difficult for him to breathe. Two vets told me that his quality of life is poor and that I should considering euthanizing him. I scheduled a mobile vet that arrived at my home today. When she gave him a sedative, he suddenly got up and walked around the yard. I had second thoughts about continuing the process. I had cancelled this visit three times already. The mobile vet said he was stubborn (about dying) However, I think that Beau was determined to live. I'm not sure if that's a normal reaction. Now, I feel guilty for cutting his life off short. It's so heart wrenching to make the final decision. However, he is now deceased, and they carried his body to the van. I will be picking up his ashes in an urn. He lived for 15.5 years. I will really miss him and heartbroken over his loss. He will never be forgotten and always be in my heart.

And I met her daughter when she was a few hours old. And I just don't want to think about when they eventually do passed. Luckily though, they are raw fed, and even though the younger one of the two will be 11 on Friday, and the mother will be 13 in two weeks time, nobody believes me when I tell them because they don't look or act that old. Here's to raw feeding. I do believe they live longer lives in healthier lives when they are fed species appropriate diet.

When my cat stopped eating his food and I felt I had to try a new food, I chose raw food. Was it correct? I dont know. At the time I didnt know he had CKD and wasnt conscious of things like phosphorus... But he ate the food, ate really well, put on weight after being practically malnourished and became more mobile. If he ever had arthritis it got better. He lived to 20. Raw seems to help most things, unfortunately not kidneys.

I’ve been sobbing nonstop since then and even typing this right now. I feel like nobody in my life understands that losing a animal companion, when you come from a broken home where both parents emotionally neglected you and were abusive, is just so devastating. I lost my one and only safety I ever had growing up. No matter how mean my mother was to me, no matter the horrible things my dad would scream at me, no matter how much they both told me I was a disappointment and never approved of me… I would come to my room and cuddle with her in my bed and for once in my life feel safe. Feel not judged. Feel truly loved and accepted. I would look into her eyes and feel so at peace. I hope she is at peace too, she deserves it after everything she did for me to keep me alive and grounded during my traumatic childhood. I can’t wait to be reunited with my baby Joon someday.

They would say, "It's just a dog" or "It's just a cat." They would trivialize things if you make mention about your grief. I lost my senior cat to CKD last September and it broke my heart into a million pieces. I closed my online shops for a month to cope with the loss. It helped. We lost our Mr Katt a few years ago, suddenly fell seriously ill and pretty much gone when I got him to the vet. The Vet had to put him down. He was 20 and was an awesome cat! BUT, as I was dealing with that I got a text from my husband, he was on duty and one of the pilots came in with a very tiny ball of fighting fur that they pulled out from under one of the vehicles. Someone had to throw it over the fence because it was a secure FAA area. She was only about 6 oz...so tiny. I was heartbroken about Mr Katt but felt the need to go to the hangar and get this little kitten to safety. We brought her home and named her Chopper....I think Katt knew I needed her and it was meant to be. We will always miss him.

My horses taught me that it is not the end. The first few almost killed me as my heart literally broke. But I learned from each one and reflected on the lessons each taught me. What great teachers they are if we are sensitive to that. It is not the end and they have graduated! Animals have one foot here in the physical realm and one foot in the spiritual realm .There is no separation from Source for them. They are Source in different meatsuits. It's us that puts that sort of thinking out. We make it so much more worse than it truly is. I have another horse that I am getting ready to help cross the rainbow bridge and it will be a celebration. I also have a 15 year old poodle that looks like he could be here for a while yet but I have already given him permission to go when he feels he has graduated from this classroom. Or is it I have figured out the lesson he came here to teach me? hmm lol They also make room for the next souls to come to teach us...

Condolences on Murray. I didn't get another dog after I lost my buddy 40 years ago and I still feel the pain. I got a rescue 6 years ago, she's now around 10 and I fear the day I will lose her. I know I saved her and have given her a good life, but she is really slowing down. It is so hard to lose a best friend.

The pain and sense of loss are horribly real. I am 65 now, and have only ever shared my life with small breed dogs, and the particular thing about small dogs is, no matter how old they get, you always see them as children. The empathy of others is very important after a loss. My last boss was a total merciless, tightwad sociopath who would take no excuse and give no quarter under any circumstances, but, incredibly, the day I had my Yorkshire Terrier, Magnet, sent to sleep, he turned up on the job and gave me a week off with pay, and I understood immediately that he had experienced the same. I never forget their birthdays, and never forget them. We owe them so much.

You are SO right!! We lost our blind, deaf rescued pug Petey 3 months ago, but this is the first time in my entire life ( I'm old!) that I've not had a pet at home to greet me and help me over the loss. Many people have been very supportive and that helps but I still feel devastated. He'd been an abused dog, so it took a few years to get his total trust, but our happiness was that he bonded with us. Don't know how long the incredible sadness will last, but giving him happiness was worth it.

Thank you so much for this I agree bereavement days should apply to pets...we lost our dog in 2021 I am still having some trouble it also made me an extreme worryer about my next oldest dog its very taxing and some people just don't get it. I am so sorry to you and everyone that had lost a pet ..it just shows how loved they are and how much we were loved by them by how hard this is.

Dr. Jones, I completely agree with you, pet related issues (pet loss, pet assistance, compulsory business trips without taking your pet with you...) are never considered by society. It's a tragedy. Grieving is never easy, and I am very sorry to hear that you're not so well. I am still mourning the loss of my beloved 19-year-old cat. It happened 7 years ago, and today, it is still like day one. Time has stopped. I know I will feel this pain forever, and I have accepted it. I sincerely hope that you have someone to talk to, someone who can understand what you are going through, and I hope that this video & our comments contributed to make you feel a little bit better. Please, take your time to heal. That's the most important thing you can do. I wish you and your family all the best.

Dr. Jones I'm so sorry for your loss. You have my deepest condolences. I too, just loss a 7-month-old Yorkipoo to cancer. I can't begin to explain the pain I felt. No matter the age of the pet the pain is the same. I've had several pets in my lifetime and the grief was devastating with each one. They are family and the grief process takes time and is definitely necessary to heal. As with every situation in my life, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ brought me through and healed my hurt. Your videos are such a blessing for me and my pets. They are heartfelt and sincere. I'll be praying for your heart to heal. Speaking for myself and I'm sure most of your RU-vid family, we love and appreciate you. Take care and remember there's no earthly sorrow that heaven can't heal.

Each time we lose a baby it hits us harder and harder and sometimes it seems we can deal better and other times not...like a roller coaster. Life gets hard..knowing we will be reunited helps...but yes it is draining...our Heart goes with them..Feels Good when we can give Love to new Babies and those that are left with us.

My Miss Daisy passed after 13 1/2 years. 13 of those years was spent in a wheelchair but she had a great life and was a loving pittie to everyone. We were inseparable. I cried everyday for a year, its now been a lil over 2 years, I think of her everyday just like other family members i’ve lost. She was family❤️❤️❤️💔💔💔

So sorry for your loss, Doc! I know just how you feel. My soft spot has always been for my pets. I guess my bond with them has been more powerful than any human connection that I have had. They are our children. I have lost so many and still dream of them at night. I lost my last beloved feline pet a yr and a half ago. I took it much harder than expected! I have no other pet to comfort me! Most people don't understand how deep your love for your pet can be. I was in shock and had to have every light on in the house. I had great anxiety even bathing and washing my hair. My entire equilibrium was thrown off for months. I was never in such a bad state. Then 6 months later, just when my brain was beginning to recover, my best friend suddenly died. Now my 96 yr old dad that I care for is in the hospital with pneumonia. Me without a pet has never happened before. Talk about being in an altered state!!!!! But what is right with the world?!!! Prayers out to all of those suffering in grief and may God take care of the animals, children, elderly and all that are suffering!

You are so right . Thank you for this. Its such a loss when we lose a member of our family, which is exactly who our pets are. I have been there ,done that, seems like to many times. Hang in Andrew . Grief is a hard thing to predict. It is so worth it to bring a new member into the family ,when you are at a loss, at least for me, which has saved me. I am hopefully on my last family member who will be with me until the end.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Murray. May the all loving memories of him, live on in your heart forever. Thank you for sharing him with us on your videos. He always was such a willing patient, as he sat and listened to you educate us! He even had a smile as he looked out to all of us. He was lucky to have you for his pet parent. I also had to put my cat Cinders down, January 4th. I cried so hard my heart and chest 💔 hurt. I've lost few dogs and cats before her and it's same hurt. Animals are just so much part of our lives. They become so much more than animal. It's really a true love and bond. Only pet parents know this love. They are always there to comfort us during our bad times and good times. Than suddenly they are gone. It's okay to grieve their loss. It's part of healing. Please know they will be waiting for us. Some might even feel them still around. I did. The evening when I put Cinders in her resting place, I was crying as I walked back to the house, it was almost dark, I had comfort of the outdoor Christmas lights on the tree where I placed her. I guess the lights were now her memorial. I see it from my kitchen window. I made my coffee for morning, looked out, and told her I loved her and was crying hard again because the routine with her, was no longer 😢 I laid in bed, and as I was drifting off on my left arm, I felt 3 taps. I felt l it was her, saying she's still with me.

I adopted a 14 yo poodle almost 2 years ago. He is currently doing okay but every day I get up and treat every day with him like it could be our last day together. I am fortunate enough to work from home so we are never apart. I always say it’s that hardest act of love we have to carry out for them, making that horrible decision if we have to do so. I am so sorry about Murray.

My dog now is 10 and I really dread him passing. So much, that I wonder if I should even get another dog after. It is just so unbearable when they pass. Sending you big hugs, my friend🥰

Yes it's heartbreaking to lose a pet but there's so many pets out there who need good homes that it's worth the heartbreak if you can give them a good life and make them happy. A new pet never replaces the one you lost but they help fill the hole in your heart that's left from the one you lost.
