Grief Update - Beginning of The End - First Year!

When we make it through that first year without our loved one, we can give a huge, spiritual and grateful sigh of relief and say, "A year ago I didn't think I'd make it. BUT I DID!" And...YOU ARE ALMOST THERE! God bless you.

I got some blue nail polish and thought of Sarah. It's been going on 3 years since my husband went home. It hurts. I go day to day.

I'm so happy you found someone to navigate through this difficult time and life. You are so young and should continue living as best you can.

When you have been to heck and back caring for a terminal individual that you love dearly ,you have already done alot of grieving when God calls them home, I think it's great you have someone new that can relate😊

Tread lightly with new relationships. It gets extremely complicated especially with children. Children are very unlikely to accept a new partner even in just divorce but in death it’s even less likely. Trust me, kids will be very resentful at a certain point. They will mainly be sad at the time you spend with the new lady and see it as time with Dad is stolen by the new love interest. Sorry to put out the cautionary tale but I lived it and my daughter was really hurt.

I'm so pleased how you have walked through the fire. With love, compassion and patience your lives are moving along with hope and strength. I hope you find some joy in every single day. I've used your Sarah's wise saying so often. "Be Kind and Make Good Choices." That is her legacy that will always be a gift she gave to all of us. Love to you and the kids from Vermont ❤

Hi looks like u all r heading in the right direction for a happier future 😊...yes it's sad when it comes to time frame of your loved one passing. For me as I've lost a lot of family members to cancer n it's something that sticks in your head forever...but for me I try to celebrate their birthdays, cause to me this is that day that everyone was so lucky to have them in their lives, the day they were born...but I'm glad u all had a little break n have had time to find happier days 😊

You and your family deserve to be happy no matter what.

I had just been sitting here thinking about the POG Family and how everyone is doing and there you are! Thank you for the update so much. Still sending positive thoughts for you and your whole family. The very best advice that the hospice nurse who was assigned to my Dad back several years ago was to not make any really important either life-changing or drastic changes in your life until you have grieved the loss for at least one year. That stuck with me through the next loss - my Mom 3 yrs ago and then my only sibling's passing/my brother 1-1/2 years ago. Then, a little less than a month after my brother passed of cancer, I lost my very best friend/ride-or-die friend since we were both 17 years old to an unexpected and undiagnosed massive heart attack - after 3 losses in my immediate family within a just short of time, this loss literally nearly knocked me off my feet completely because it was completely unexpected and so shocking. And, I held the line and didn't make any drastic changes in my life with each loss. Funny how just one piece of advice did seem to be quite helpful and I was able to use it yet again and try and work through all my grief and losses.

Good for you, friend. I am glad that you have the perspective of allowing somebody in your life to help support you. They could never be a replacement for you or your children, but they can bring more joy and friendship and love to the equations. Respect is key.

I was warned by many widows and widowers in my support groups that the first anniversary often hits hard. After the 11 month mark, I felt it hitting me hard and was very difficult for me through the 1st anniversary mark. I started to spiral, but knowing it was normal and being prepared helped me a lot.
